A party.
Usually takes place at an izakaya (see page 46).
< ENKAI
Same as nomikai, but usually celebrating a specific thing.
< HANAMI
Spread out a picnic blanket beneath the cherry blossoms, and watch everyone proceed to drink until said picnic blanket is a kaleidoscopic Jackson Pollock of chunder.
< DONKĪ
Welcome to Don Quixote, the Japanese Wal-Mart. Not a place you want to go party at, but it’s open 24 hours and you can always find some interesting folks wandering the aisles at 3 a.m.
< NIJIKAI
The after party. This can be held at any of the above establishments, and often involves missing your train, puking on your friend’s shoes, and hitting on nameless coworkers.
< GŌKON / KOMPA
A dude invites his male friends, and a girl invites her female friends, and everybody gets drunk and feels each other out. At some point the girls go to the bathroom and decide who gets who. Basically it’s an institutionalized version of Friday night at the bar.
