. The Channel Islands were part of the Duchy of Normandy for some two centuries or more, until King John lost mainland Normandy to the King of France in 1204. The Islands maintained their allegiance to the English Crown, becoming Crown dependencies with the right to their own laws, taxes, and governmental structure.
