Tonight was slow, and Katrina didn’t even have Eric to keep her company. Her father made sure he knew not to come to the bar as part of her grounding. Life couldn’t get much worse at this point, and although she knew she was being totally irrational she couldn’t help it.
“Katrina! I need two beers!” When Kelsey, one of the waitresses that didn’t particularly like Katrina, announced her order with more than a little snot the bartender hit her breaking point. Did she even remember the last time someone had said ‘please’ or ‘thank you’ to her?
The answer was no.
Slamming the two bottled on the countertop hard enough to break them, Katrina practically sneered at Kelsey as everyone stopped to watch her become the center of attention once again.
“Get your own damn beer, you stupid bitch. I quit!” Two years she’d invested in this place, and what did she get? Not a single thing. Not a raise- or a polite courtesy.
Of course, not she had cuts on her hands and alcohol seeping into those gashes, but she ignored the pain. Besides, she was in enough hurt as it was. What were a few flesh wounds?
Storming out of the bar, Katrina flexed her fingers and frowned as she stood under a street light. This was definitely not a good situation.
“Katrina?” At the call her head whipped up, and she felt a surge of
something
inside her- a violent cocktail of emotions that made her eyes watery and her breath come in short gasps. Eric immediately gathered her up, and he wove his hand through her hair while her own bloodied fingers tangled in his shirt.
It was like some bad retelling of Romeo and Juliet.
“Eric-c I’m… pregnant.” Katrina’s words spilled out before she could stop them, but immediately she felt lighter. It was as if a hundred pounds had been lifted off her shoulders. Around her, Eric tensed but he didn’t stay like that for long.
“Okay- that’s good. Baby, that’s good. Right now you need to go home so your mom can fix your hands.” He let go of her and held her face, and she nodded dumbly. Which direction was home? What had even happened to her hands? Glancing down, Katrina felt a little woozy from the blood pouring down her fingers to drop to the ground.
“O-h-h-h-“
Just like when she’d been hit in the face Katrina lost a large chunk of time, and one minute she was on the street but the next she was in her driveway. She didn’t remember being so flimsy.
“She’s here! Luca- she’s here so I have to go.” Katrina’s mother was glad, a little, that her daughter was so unused to pain. It meant she was going to pass out, and an unconscious patient in this case was a good one. She sat on Eric’s lap, and he was the only thing holding her up as her mother took one hand and poured a good amount of rubbing alcohol on it.
When Katrina cracked open her eyes it was dark, but she could see the sunlight struggling to seep through the curtains in her bedroom. She tried to sit up, but strong hands held her shoulders. Wasn’t it dangerous to sit up too fast? She would get dizzy, and maybe even throw up. If that happened things would get even worse.
“Take it slow, Kat.” Everything came rushing back to her, and Katrina took a shuddering breath. Only the day before she’d found out she was pregnant, and then she’d quit her job. She hurt herself, and had a mental breakdown directed towards her father. How could so many things happen in one day?
“Hey, don’t cry, baby. Everything is fine.” Eric sat on the edge of her bed and wrapped his arms around her to get her to sit up slowly. He pulled her into his lap, and she emptied her tears onto his shirt. It was like she couldn’t stop, but he didn’t mind.
After all- they were mates, and she was pregnant. She had a right to be emotional.
“Sh-h-h… I need you to calm down because we need to talk. Can you do that for me?” Maybe it wasn’t the best time, but he figured he’d be better off getting it out earlier rather than later. After all, she’d promptly told him about her pregnancy, and it made him feel scummy for keeping secrets from her when he really didn’t have to.
After Katrina calmed down enough to only sniffle loudly she realized she wasn’t even in her own bedroom- she was in Eric’s. How did she even get here? There was no way her parents would let her be here without them. They were always protective like that.
“I need you to listen very carefully to what I’m about to say, okay?” Nodding, Katrina didn’t trust her voice not to crack so she kept her mouth shut. Whatever he had to say, though, must’ve been big because he took a deep breath before continuing.
“I know this is hard for you to understand, and I mean this in the most nonthreatening way possible but- I’m not… human. I’m a shifter. A bear shifter.” For a second Katrina couldn’t really think of anything, but it passed quickly and she started to laugh. It was a hysteric, bubbling laughter that lacked humor and felt rather dry. She laughed, and laughed, and after a while that laugh turned into tears and she didn’t know why.
“Why am I crying?”
Katrina’s shrill shriek made Eric grimace, and he tightened his hold on her. This would’ve been so much easier if she wasn’t a raging, hormonal mess, but he had no choice but to trudge on.
“It’s because your body isn’t equipped to handle what’s inside you, Kat. I know it’s hard to believe, but I can prove it to you if I have to. You’re my mate, and I want you to know this about me.”
Mate.
“Like soul mates…?”
“Yeah, exactly. You and me, baby. Together forever. I knew the moment I walked into that bar that you were mine.” In hindsight Katrina was taking all of this very calmly considering the circumstances, and after she wiped her eyes and face she looked up. Eric was so incredibly serious that she just had to believe him. How could she not when he was making a face like that?
“Can you show me?” Obviously Eric was shocked by the request, but he didn’t protest as he slid Katrina off him to stand up. Maybe this was why she was here, and not in her own bed. Maybe he didn’t want to do this where people could see him.
“Don’t blink.” Katrina wasn’t sure what she expected, but the big brown bear that appeared in front of her within a second wasn’t it. She couldn’t tell Eric from any other bear that would be in the woods. He was the same height and build and had the same shaggy coat. Honestly, she should’ve been terrified but she wasn’t. If he wanted to attack her or kill her he would’ve done it a long time ago- long before she presented any problems.
“I believe you.” Breathing out the words, Katrina felt like she should be feeling something, but all she felt was drained. She needed a good cuddling, and some coddling. Besides, it wasn’t like she could refute what was right in front of her eyes.
When the big bear turned back into a recognizable man Katrina felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. Her mind was trying to come up with ways to deny what she’d seen, but that was just impossible and it was giving her a headache.
“Come cuddle with me.” Since she was in the middle of the bed Katrina didn’t have to move, and Eric smirked a little at the mumbled demand as he slid his jeans over his hips.
“Whatever you want, baby.” She could make it work- even if he wasn’t human. Besides, love was blind. It didn’t care what someone looked like, or their sexual orientation, so it only made sense that it didn’t care about species either.

"Me pregunto qué será ?".
"¿Qué significa? Ellos serán niños".
"No.
Me amas".
