‘I am breaking up with you, I realised we have nothing in common.’
Jackie put her phone down, turned over, vomited and choked on a sob.

‘You fucking bastard.’
Jackie text back, shortly after she cleaned herself up.
‘How could you get there first, I wanted to dump your ass before you had a chance?’

Then after a few seconds, she received another text from David,
‘it was coming Jackie, I am sure you knew it.’

Jackie felt a contraction in her chest, it was painful, as she text him back.
‘You’re all the same, you men, take what you want and then bugger off, just like that.’’

Jackie felt used by David, she slammed the front door in haste and she was determined to confront him, if it was the last thing she ever did!

When she got into her car, she called Samantha and left a voice mail message on her phone. “I am going over to David’s now, he just dumped me, via text message, you have to get over there soon.”

Jackie had felt her heart do a backflip for the fiftieth time, David was one big asshole, that she wasn’t going to let off that easily. She just couldn’t stand men, who had no balls to break it off, in a dignified way. They always took the easy way out, which to her was a real copout. A text message is just an easy way out to dump someone, who was supposed to mean something to you. She was furious with David, that he had got there first and dumped her and she was angrier than ever.

She found herself speeding on the highway and going over the speed limit in fury. She was hoping she wouldn’t cross paths with the police, because the way she was feeling right now, she had no intention of stopping. Luckily the traffic lights had all turned green and she didn’t get caught up in any red lights. It was a little reckless of her to speed on the pedal, now that she was carrying, but she was fuming.

When she arrived
outside David’s apartment, she noticed the lights on and she knew he had to be home and her phone rang as soon as she turned the car’s engine off.

“Hey Jackie, it’s me Sam, I got your voice mail and you sounded really upset, what’s happened now?”

“David text me earlier and dumped me.”

“You are kidding me right? That lowlife cheater dumped you first?”

“Yes, before I had the chance to do it first, anyway I am hear now, how far until you arrive?”

“Two minutes sweetie, I’ll be right there, I got your message earlier on but, I thought I’d call you when I was nearly there.”

“Okay see you soon, we should go in together, I might need you as my back up.”

“Cool, see you in a minute.”

That was the convenience of having a speaker on your mobile, you could chat and drive at the same time. If ever she needed a friend’s support it was today, she wasn’t in any state to get hurt now that she was carrying, so she needed Samantha for moral and physical support, if things had got out of hand.

As they both stood at David’s front porch, they could hear lots of giggling and soft music in the background and David was not alone.

She knocked at the glass panel on the front door, but there was no response, then she knocked louder, several more times, before David answered the door half naked. She was devastated as she met his eyes, knowing how he had trampled on her feelings so easily.

Jackie pushed her way in and Samantha followed behind her.

“Hey what you Sheilas think you are doing, barging in to my apartment like that, get out now?

“You are a jerk David just admit it?” Samantha scoffed at him.

A furious Jackie was left gobsmacked at what she saw inside, there were bottles of alcohol everywhere and the apartment smelt like someone was smoking pot. She went into the bedroom and nearly passed out, when she found a tall, leggy blonde in a black bra and G-string, lying in David’s bedroom.

“What are you doing here, you fat bitch,” said the woman, holding a beer bottle in her hand.

“I am here to pull your hair out,’’ Jackie defended herself. “You stupid woman, who needs to go home and get something to eat, don’t you know that bones are for the dogs, you slut.”

“Who you calling a slut,” the tatty woman said with slurred speech.

“You know, you must be really dumb to date someone like David?” Jackie said in disgust.

The scraggy blonde, laughed out loud, her speech slurred, as she took in a mouthful of alcohol.

“We aren’t dating girlfriend, we are just fucking and I think you should leave, David really needs to put his penis inside my pussy.”

Jackie wanted to hide somewhere and die and distinguish any feelings she had felt for David for good! But she was no pushover.

“What a slut you are, I don’t need to waste my time with you,’’ Jackie said as she went looking for David.”

Samantha was giving David a lecture and Jackie knew it would only fall on deaf ears. She approached him and let him have it.

“You are a fucking cheater!’’ Jackie raised her voice in fury, “scum of the earth you are? How long you been sleeping with that bimbo?”

“A couple of months,’’ David admitted shameless, “what’s it matter anyway, you’ve been dumped.”

Jackie could see the rage in his eyes building up, “I was going to dump your ass in person, because I am not chicken shit like you, to do it via text. You could have rung me,” she said huffily, flicking her hair back, her face flustered with rage.

“So is that why you came here to tell me that?” He looked down at her with contempt.

“No I came here to tell you that you are out of my life for good, I don’t want anything to do with you ever again, you are a greedy, selfish, arrogant, cheating slime-ball, that I have ever met.” It was his fault that he had taken and disposed of her like some garbage.

“Enough! Get out of my apartment both of you,” he said harshly.

Jackie and Samantha didn’t budge they just stood there, with their hands on their hips and David wasn’t going to get rid of both of them that fast, not until Jackie had finished with him.

“Hey babe, come back in the bedroom and fuck me, I need your cock,” yelled out the drunk woman, in David’s bedroom.

“I’ll be there soon,” grinned David.

“Yes you need to go in there David and put your tiny penis in that slut’s pussy, you bastard, you treated me like I was worth nothing, when my sister died.”

“Is this some kind of old woman lecture?” David scolded her. “If it is I don’t want to hear it?”

“You are a nasty piece of work,” she looked at him horrified. “I wish I never dated you in the first place, I mean who does that?” Jackie shouted at him in angst.

“Only a mother fucker like you David,” Samantha yelled at him, defending Jackie.

“Get the fuck out of my apartment both of you or I’ll punch your faces in!” David said with a cold bitterness in his voice.

Jackie looked panicked at the thought, “You are not only a beast, you are bastard.”

David grabbed both their arms and tried to push them out the front door. “Get out now!” He said fiercely.

“Leave us alone, we are going,” Samantha yelled out, trying to pull away.

“Yes we are, I don’t want to stay a second longer in this brothel,” snapped Jackie, throwing her hands up in frustration. “Just for the record David, you are trash and every dog has its day.”

“Get out now, both of you and don’t ever come back, shoo, get out!”

As they walked out, Jackie nearly tripped over a glass bottle, luckily Samantha was there to support her and they walked out safely.

David slammed the door behind them and they left his stinky apartment for good.

“Are you okay? Don’t cry sweetie, he is not worth your tears.” Samantha put a comforting shoulder around Jackie and walked her to her car and they both went in and sat inside.

“I’ll be okay, it’s just I didn’t expect him to turn out to be such a jerk,” Jackie said through crying eyes.

“The majority of men out there are jerks sweetheart, it’s just that they are really good at hiding their real personas, until they get what they want.”

“And what is it that they want?” Jackie was so confused with men and their real intentions and she had just about enough of them.

“Well sex is the most obvious and when you don’t give it to them real early, they are forced to date you, something men have grown an extinction for these days.”

“I am just glad to be rid of him, he is not someone I would want around my daughter.”

“Oh my God, do you mean you are having a baby girl?” Samantha looked overwhelmed, when Jackie mentioned the sex of the baby.

“Yes I had the ultra sound recently and they said I am having a girl,” Jackie’s face beamed in delight, as she announced it.

“That’s amazing news, you know.” Samantha shed a few tears of excitement.

“Yes at least something good has come out of my tragic romance,” Jackie managed a smile.

“You know, everything happens for a reason,’’ her best friend said with wisdom in her voice. “The romance wasn’t supposed to work out, because David wasn’t good enough for you.”

“That’s true, you are right.” Jackie saw the sense in what Samantha was saying.

“But I think you were supposed to have this child and for that reason alone, that’s why you got pregnant.”

“True, I better get going home and you have to get back to your car too.”

“Yes and we don’t want to be anywhere near David’s place either.”

“Hey how about I shout you out to dinner tomorrow night,” offered Jackie.

“No way, it’s my shout girl,’’ insisted Samantha.

“Thankyou sweetie, that’s very generous of you, you are a wonderful girlfriend, thanks for being there to lend some support tonight.”

“The least I could do, you are a great boss, too you know.”

Jackie laughed, “I try to be,” she said.

The following night
they had dinner at Julie’s Bar and Grill, it was a lovely, quiet place to share dinner with a friend. And Jackie had an enormous craving for steak and she ordered it with seasoned vegetables. Samantha ordered a light chicken salad as per usual. They went light on drinks, ordering a lemon lime and foregoing any bubbly. It was a breezy night and the atmosphere at the restaurant was very cosy, with an open fireplace, adjacent to their table.

There was something very special, about having your best friend there with you, when you need her most. Having a man in your life may have been equally important, but Jackie knew men may come and go, but at least your friends will always be there for you.

“Let’s make a toast,’’ Samantha lifted up her glass.

“Sure, what are we toasting?”

“Here’s to the birth of your baby girl?”

“I’ll toast to that, cheers.”

“So have you figured out any baby names yet?”

“Yes I have and it didn’t take long to decide.”

“Really, what did you come up with?”

“Carrie of course, I am going to call my baby girl, Carrie.”

“That’s brilliant,” grinned Samantha. “That name is very significant for you and it will keep your sister’s memory alive.”

“Absolutely it will, I will cherish her forever and I will definitely have plenty to teach her about the boys.” Jackie couldn’t have thought of a more precious gift to give her sister, than naming her daughter after her name.

Samantha laughed, as they finished eating dinner and planned to go baby shopping in a few weeks. Jackie didn’t want any baby showers as her sister’s absence, would have been heart wrenching at a time of grief.

Jackie preferred the idea of going shopping with her best friend and buying all the new born essentials for the baby first, the larger items would be bought a few months, before the impending birth.

It was going
to be a splendid time for Jackie, a time when grief would turn into joy, when death would be replaced by a birth and a moment when you knew, that nothing in this world, matters more than life itself.

Every breath we take, every moment we live, is a gift from God, that most people can take for granted in this life.

Jackie knew better and no matter how strained her relationship had been with her parents, the loss of coping with her sister’s death and the many tragic romances she had endured, she had grown resilient in this life and the strength of her human spirit remained unbroken.
