‘I know. You should really go check on the baby. I’m fine, I need to make sure he’s ok, please babe.’

‘I’ll go once the doctor checks you out ok. Don’t worry, I’ve been getting regular updates and photos from Mel. She hasn’t left his side, apart from checking on Lily.’

‘Does she know what happened? Is she ok?’

‘She’s fine, she was scared, and not seeing you is freaking her out. She knows we’re lying to her about how bad you were, seeing you will put her mind at rest.’

‘Mine to, the last time I saw her…. she was screaming for me, in the car,’ tears pooled in my eyes ‘I was terrified Mase, I didn’t know if she was ok, and then I didn’t know if the baby was ok, nobody told me anything.’

‘Hush love, everything is fine.’ At that point the doctor walked in

‘Mrs Stone, finally you’re awake. How do you feel?’

‘Crappy, I feel numb, but I’m aching.’

‘That’s to be expected, you’ve been through a lot. You had some internal damage which we repaired in surgery once your son was delivered. He’s doing well, and apart from his weight, which we’ll monitor he’s perfect. Obviously we will continue to check your vitals over the next few days but your healing well. Do you have any questions?’

‘No….I don’t know. When can I see my son?’

‘I’ll see if I can arrange that for tomorrow, but rest for tonight. If you need anything just buzz the nurse.’

‘Thank you doctor.’ he left, and once the nurses had removed the monitor, we were alone again.

‘I’m going to let everyone know your awake, I’ll just be a minute.’ He quickly walked out, and was back in a few minutes, followed by John, Lys and Lily.

‘Mummy,’ she ran to me and Mase lifted her onto the bed so I could hold my baby.

‘Oh Baby, are you ok?’

‘I’m fine, are you still sick? Uncle John and Auntie Lys told me that you were really tired and sleeping.’

‘I was baby, but I’m fine now, I just need to get my strength back so we can go home.’

‘I saw my baby brother, he’s tiny.’ I laughed and Mase joined in.

‘Yes he probably is, he came a bit early but he will grow. The doctors just need to keep an eye on him.’

‘Daddy hasn’t seen him.’

‘Oh Princess, I couldn’t leave Mommy, we can see him together tomorrow.’

‘Oh great. When can I go home?’

‘Now, mommy’s awake why don’t you go home with Uncle John, and Auntie Lys, and perhaps Auntie Mel can go with you.’

‘Yeah, we can get the baby’s room ready before he comes home.’

‘That sounds great sweetie, John!’

‘Of course hun. I’m so glad you’re awake. You scared the shit out of us.’

‘That’s a cuss word.’ We laughed at Lily’s correction.

‘Sorry but I was scared so I get one cuss word Lily.’

‘Ok, can you let my parents know what’s happening before you go?’

‘Sure man. We’ll see you tomorrow.’

‘Let me know if you need me to bring anything tomorrow.’

‘Thanks Lys, I will.’ and with a goodbye, my friends left. I was starting to feel tired, weird considering I had been asleep on and off for three days.

‘Babe, you need to sleep, I’m going to go wash up and I’ll be back in a few minutes.’

‘No, why don’t you go home, have a good nights sleep in our bed. Take your parents home so they can rest, I’m fine.’

‘I’ll leave when you do, so stop fussing and get some sleep.’ He kissed my forehead and walked out, leaving me to my own thoughts. It didn’t take long before I started to feel everything weigh down on me, and then sleep took me.

Chapter 26

Summer

I woke up the next day, and it was a bright and sunny, Mason was asleep in a chair, he was clean faced, wearing jeans and a t shirt. He looked fresh, and sexy as hell. I surprised myself with the thoughts filtering through my mind but hey, this was the longest Mase and I had been separated since he came to the UK. I started to move my arms, and then my legs, the numbness had dissipated but I still felt achy all over. My movements stirred my husband who woke up with a happy bounce out of his chair.

‘Good morning angel.’

‘Hi babe, you look great.’

‘I’m feeling good, my wife is beautiful, my daughter is happy and we have a gorgeous baby boy to visit with today.’

‘We can see him? Oh my god, can you help me get up, I need a shower.’

‘Sweetheart are you sure your strong enough to stand for a shower? I can get a nurse to help you.’

‘No, I don’t want a stranger seeing me naked.’ Mase laughed out loud and said

‘Ok, wait here a minute,’ then walked out of the room. When he came back in, the nurse followed. She checked my vitals, checked my stitches and gave me the once over, then with a smile on her face she left. Mase walked toward the door, and turned the lock.

‘What are you up to?’

‘Well you said you didn’t want a stranger to see you naked so I decided that we could take a shower together.’

‘Your kidding, they agreed to that, oh my god that’s hilarious.’

‘Well, they pretty much agreed to anything I asked for, your healing so they said that a shower would be a great idea, and having me help meant that you had support, just in case.’

‘I love you, thank you.’

‘Baby, thank you…. I get to see you naked.’

‘Hey, I get to see you naked too. Can you help me up so I can take this gown off?’

‘Wait a second, let me sort the shower out first, then we can strip.’ His cheeky grin pretty much said it all, not that I felt sexy or anything, I had no idea what I looked like

’Ok, lets get naked.’

‘You first.’

‘Sweetie, are you ok, or do you just want to watch me take my clothes off.’

‘How do you do that? You always know…..yea I feel a bit weird, I don’t know what I look like, I just had surgery, and a baby, and I’m probably broken all over. How can you want to look at me?’

‘Hey, I love you. It’s never been about the way you look, but I happen to think you’re gorgeous, and very sexy. Your putting too much pressure on yourself, you just woke up after three days, during which you had an emergency C section and surgery to repair internal damage, give yourself a break love.’

‘Ok, I hear you, I’m being an arse.’ His giggles gave way to mine, Mase stripped, and then helped me take off the hospital gown. He helped walk me into the en suite shower, where he held me and washed me all over, before sitting me on the bench and washing my hair. It felt heavenly. Once we were clean, he helped me dry off, and brushed my hair, Lys had dropped off my comfy nightie and a robe, and in no time at all, I was dressed and sat ready, I was about to see my son for the first time.

We waited for about twenty minutes before the nurse came back in, with a wheelchair. I was wheeled out of my room, and taken to the floor above which was the neo natal and maternity unit. I was taken into another room to wait, Mase paced the room while I sat patiently. Suddenly the door opened and a nurse entered wearing pink scrubs, behind her were another two nurses wheeling in my son. I held my breath, and Mase grabbed my hand, they pushed the incubator toward us and stopped.

‘Hello, Mr and Mrs Stone, I’m Nurse Spencer, I’ve been caring for your son. He’s feeding well, and has put a little weight on, his breathing is good and hopefully once he’s gained enough weight you can take him home.’

I just sat there staring at him, I couldn
’t take my eyes off him, Mase was like a brick wall, just stood over me looking down at this tiny bundle, I was speechless. ‘He’s been fed and changed so he’s all ready for you.’

‘Can I hold him?’

‘Of course, he may have come early but he’s strong and well developed.’ She opened the side lid, and lifted him out, he was dressed in a onesie, with a little hat on, the nurse wrapped him in a blanket and passed him to me, he was so tiny but beautiful.

‘Hi, baby, I’m your mummy, and this is your daddy, you look so much like daddy. Oh god, he’s perfect, beautiful,’ my emotions began to get the better of me and my eyes welled with tears, so I lifted him to Mase, who looked awe struck but moved his arms to cradle his son.

‘I can’t believe he’s ours. Hey baby boy, when you’re older I’ll tell you all about your dramatic birth and how brave mommy is. Can we call Lily in here please?’

‘Of course Mr Stone,’ within a couple of minutes Lily walked into the room, along with Gaby and Henry.

‘Mummy, daddy.’

‘Hey Princess, we thought you should be here with us. Mom, dad thanks for looking after Lily.’

‘It’s a pleasure son, have you picked out any names?’

‘Not yet, we talked about a couple but ….well we thought we’d have time, I guess we need to choose the perfect name.’ Mase walked away rocking our son, while I watched, he was a natural but I always knew that.

Some time later Nurse Spencer came back for our baby, saying goodbye was heartbreaking but necessary. Mase and his family said goodbye at the lifts, and Lily went home with her grandparents. I was wheeled back to my room, where a silver cart and tray where waiting for me.

   ‘Huh, what did you do?’

‘Well I thought you could do with some decent food, so I asked Lys to arrange it. Do you mind?’

‘No, I’m starving. Thanks babe.’

‘Here let me help you into bed then I can set this all up.’ What had I done to deserve this amazing man, my thoughts started to wander, so much had happened over such a short space of time.

‘Earth to Summer. Babe where’d you go?’

‘Oh sorry, I was just thinking about everything that’s happened since we met, it hasn’t even been a year, and yet here we are, together, married, a family, what’s next?’

‘Who knows, that’s the best part we get to live our lives, now….should we think about a name for our little man?’

‘Good idea,’ giggling I dug into my pasta, while we talked about different names. We talked for a while before the events of the day started to take hold, we didn’t decide on a name, but I did fall asleep with a smile, and in my mind I had a perfect picture of my family.

I was in hospital for just over a week once I had woken up. Our son was kept in for an additional three weeks making sure his weight continued to increase before he was allowed home. When the day finally arrived, we were bombarded by fans that had graciously waited for our son to be released, we hadn’t announced his name yet but as we walked into the hospital the crowd was happy, as were the reporters who sat waiting.

‘Oh My God, it’s like their waiting for a king to arrive.’ I said giggling.

‘I know, right. It’s cute that the fans are here though, it’s like their part of things. I’m glad we waited until now to announce his name. Are you sure you’re happy about the photographers outside?’

‘If they don’t get anything here they’ll follow us everywhere, and I’d rather not worry about them. I just want to go get our baby and bring him home.’

‘I agree, lets go love.’

We were greeted by nurses and doctors from all departments who came out to see Mason, and to wish us well. When we walked into the nursery, Nurse Spencer was getting our baby dressed for his big debut.

‘Hello, Summer, Mason. How are you both?’

‘We’re good thanks, just looking forward to taking him home.’

‘I bet, well he’s all ready, did you bring a car seat?’

‘It’s all ready to go.’

‘Lets get him tucked away then,’ Our son’s nurse was a dab hand and strapped him in the seat in no time, unfortunately hospital policy would not allow us to take him home without confirmation that we had the correct car seat so we walked out saying goodbye to all the staff that had cared for me and our son after the accident and once we were outside, where a large crowd was gathered, we took him out of the seat to make our announcement. As soon as we were in view the noise grew and camera flashes went off like wild fire. Mason held our son in his arms and addressed the crowd.
