Mason flew back to the States the following day, stressing over his time away from us. I tried not to worry about it, a couple of days was nothing right? We said goodbye at the house, not wanting to make a scene for the paps. His plane was all ready for him so I knew he’d be in the air as soon as he reached the private airport. We carried on with our day and I waited patiently for his call, putting my mind at rest that he had arrived safely. Lily’s tutor finished for the day and she bounced into the lounge.

‘Mummy, has daddy called yet?’

‘Not yet baby, but his flight was about eight hours so he should be landing any time, I’m sure it wont be long. How about some pasta for dinner?’

‘Yummy, can I have ice cream for dessert?’

‘If you eat your dinner, yes.’

We ate together and waited, an hour later we received a text from Mase telling us he
’d arrived safely and was on his way to a meeting, but would call later. I said a small thank you to god that he was safe and decided to get Lily ready for bed.

The next day, we got ready early and I took Lily to a dentist appointment before running a few errands. On our way back we were stopped at a red light when a car pulled up next to us, it was weird the driver just sat and stared at me, no smile, no emotion at all so I ignored him, and when the light changed I started to drive forward leaving him at the light. We drove a couple of miles before I noticed the same car behind us and gaining speed. I started to panic.

‘Baby, can you sit back in your seat and hold on tight ok, mummy has to try and speed up so we can get home quickly, ok.’

‘Yeah mum.’ I dialled John.

‘Hey hun how’s it going?’

‘John, I’m sorry but I think I’m being followed, I don’t know what to do.’

‘Summer, listen to me, don’t panic. Try to memorize as much detail as possible about the car, the driver, and I want you to drive to the police station, but as soon as you hang up call the police and tell them what’s happening.’

‘Ok, John, I’m scared.’

‘Sweetie, its ok just do what I said, I’m on my way ok, I’ll meet you at the station.’

I hung up and dialled 999, the operator answered and I told them what was happening, I sounded insane but they humoured me and told me to drive straight to the station. I hung up, and tried my best to stay calm while taking in as much information as possible. The next time I looked in my rear view mirror, the dark saloon was so close I didn
’t have time to breathe before he hit us, Lily screamed, and my heart stopped beating for a minute before he rammed us again. We swerved and hit a parked car before rolling, the last thing I saw before blackness took me was Lily screaming my name.

When I came to, there were sirens and lights, I couldn
’t move, when my eyesight cleared there was a policeman covering me and fire-fighters trying to get me out of the car.

‘Hey, try not to move, your alright we are just about to move you into the ambulance, what’s your name sweetie?’

‘Huh, my….my name. It’s Summer. Where’s….Lily, where’s my baby?’

‘It’s ok Summer, Lily’s being taken to hospital but she was wide awake, a Mr Sinclair went with her.’

‘John. Oh God, my baby, is my baby ok?’

‘We’ll get you all checked out at the hospital Summer try not to worry.’ My mind was going a million miles a minute, Lily, John, Lys, my Son, oh my god, Mason, while I tried to figure out what was happening, I heard a scream, oh god, Lyssa.

‘Get out of my way, that’s my sister, Summer. Please let me through.’

‘Its ok let her through.’ The policeman shouted

‘Summer, Summer…. oh my god what happened? Is she ok, will she be ok? What should I do?’

‘You need to calm down, your sister’s awake, but she’ll be checked at the hospital. Is there anyone you would like us to call?’

‘Oh, the baby, she’s seven months pregnant, is the baby ok? Oh, I need to call Mase, her husband, he’s in the States on business, Can I come with her? Lily, where’s Lily?’

‘Miss you need to stay calm, Lily is on her way to hospital, Mr Sinclair went with her, I think you need to call her husband, or we can.’

‘No, I will. I’m right here Summer, It’s gonna be ok.’ My friend was panicking, I guess staying calm was not an option, before I knew it I was being wheeled into the ambulance, Lys sat next to me while making a call to Mason, I tried really hard to listen but I couldn’t stay awake. The last thing I heard was Lys saying

‘Mase, listen to me. There’s been an accident, you need to come home, now. I don’t know how bad she is yet, we’re on our way to hospital now. When I know more I’ll……’ finally darkness took me.

Chapter 23

Mason

   I
’m so bored, meeting after meeting and all I can think about is how much I’m missing Summer and Lily. My heart is actually aching. It feels like something is missing.

‘Mr Stone…. If there’s nothing else we can take care of the finishing touches to this deal.’

‘Huh….oh sorry gentleman, yes of course. I apologise my mind is elsewhere, but everything seems in order so proceed.’

‘It’s understandable, you just got married and we understand your about to have a baby.’

I smiled at that.

‘Yes we are, I’m sorry that’s why I’m distracted, but I know I have an excellent team here taking care of business. If there’s nothing else I think we can break for lunch.’ My cell rang as I was leaving the office.

‘Mom, how are you?’

‘Oh sweetie we’re good, actually we are in the city and wondered if you’re free for lunch?’

‘Yea that’s sounds great, I’m just leaving the office, how about Mario’s?’

‘That sounds lovely we’re only five minutes away.’

‘Ok see you there, bye.’

I felt a bit better about seeing my parents although I missed my girls, I was only around the corner from the restaurant so It didn
’t take long until I was walking through the doors, I spotted my mom and dad sat in a booth, at the same time my cell rang, I stopped when I saw Lys’s name flash on the screen, and panic started to take over.

‘Lys…. is everything ok?’ I knew it wasn’t, I knew it was Summer.

‘Mase, listen to me. There’s been an accident, you need to come home, now. I don’t know how bad she is yet, we’re on our way to hospital now. When I know more I’ll….call.’

My heart stopped, and my face must have said everything, my mom hurried to me, followed by my dad. I listened to Lyssa
’s sobs then spoke.

‘Listen to me Lys, I’m on my way home, I need you to call me if there is any news ok.’

‘Yes I will, Mase I….’

‘Lys I know, please I can’t…. not right now. Where’s Lily?’

‘She’s on her way to the hospital, John is with her. The paramedic said she was ok but they were getting her checked out. Where leaving now, I’ll call, I promise.’ she rung off and I turned to my parents with tears in my eyes.

‘Mom….I need to go home.’

‘What’s happened son?’

‘Summers been in an accident, I don’t know much just that she and Lily are on their way to hospital. I….I have to go now.’

‘We’re coming with you.’ My dad brought his car around and I called for my plane to be ready.

‘I need to call Mel, she was on her way to meet us for lunch. I’ll tell her what happened.’

‘Thanks dad.’

‘Sweetheart, she’ll be fine.’ I didn’t respond. I felt numb, my family was hurt and I was too far away to help. It didn’t take long for us to reach the airport. My plane was prepped and we were ready for take off.

‘Mel, listen to me, you don’t need to….I know but we’re already taking off. Ok I’ll tell him. You too. Your sister is catching the next flight out, she won’t be far behind us son.’

‘Thanks dad.’ I didn’t know what to say or think, the love of my life was in pain, my little girl was hurt and I had no idea about our son.

‘Dad, this is the second time she’s been hurt since she met me, what is going on?’

‘Mason, it’s an accident. You can’t blame yourself, I know you feel bad for being away but the baby wasn’t due for a couple of months. Lets just wait and see how she is ok.’

I just nodded. Before long we had been in the air for three hours and without realising it, I
’d fallen asleep. Summers sweet smile was all I could see, the way she looked at me, the way she felt in my arms, how could this happen?

Summer

The next time I woke, it was to lots of movement, I had pain all over, IV’s in my arms and monitors on my heart, and another around my belly. I started to panic, tears welled in my eyes, and the fear began to crush me.

‘Mrs Stone, I’m Dr Price, your at the hospital, do you remember what happened?’

‘I….I don’t know, what’s happening? My baby….is he ok? Please tell me.’

‘Your son is doing ok, but were monitoring his heartbeat, your accident is causing stress to you and your son.’

‘My daughter…Lily?’

‘She’s being looked after in another room, your brother and sister are with her, and your husband is on his way, try to stay calm. We’re taking care of you.’ Is he kidding, I was scared to death, but before I could think my eyes closed once again.

‘She’s in and out of consciousness, we are keeping an eye on the baby but are main concern is any internal damage. Is her husband here yet?’ I listened to the doctor talking to my friends.

‘No, he’s on his way, but please tell us is she going to be ok?’

‘I know you’re worried, but we are taking every precaution, however we will need permission, if her body becomes too stressed we may need to perform a C section.’

‘But the baby’s not ready yet.’

‘Lys, we need to think about Summer and the baby. Do you think that the baby will be ok if that happens?’

‘The child will be premature but he stands a better chance if he’s delivered, and his mother will get the best care we can give her.’

‘I need to talk to Mason, it’s his decision, I’ll call him.’

I listened but my eye lids wouldn
’t open. John moved away from me, and Lys held my hand.

‘Mase,’ I tried my best to stay alert but couldn’t make much out, the last thing I remember was John hanging up and sighing.

Mason

I woke to a buzzing, my cell. I looked around and noticed we were about to start descending to land, that was good. I quickly answered the call.

   ‘John, how’s she doing?’

‘Mase, she’s holding her own but the doctors need permission from you in the event they need to deliver the baby.’

‘What, Why can’t they tell you more? this is shit.’

‘I know man, I have no idea what to do. At the moment they have her hooked up to monitors, their watching the baby’s heartbeat but they are worried about internal damage, they said if he needs to be delivered they would both be in better hands. What do you want us to do?’

‘Just what your doing man. I’ll talk to the doctors when we arrive, so we have all the facts before we need to make a decision. God…. I just want to see them both. How’s Lily?’

‘Lily’s asleep, she doesn’t know anything yet apart from Mummy’s asleep and the docs are looking after the baby.‘

‘Ok, we‘re just landing…. so I‘m on my way.‘

‘Ok that’s good, I’ll tell them your nearly here.‘

‘Thanks.‘

‘See you soon.’

I hung up and willed the plane to stop, I had a car waiting so we could get to hospital ASAP. Mom and dad stayed close by but didn
’t say anything, I think they were afraid of my reaction. I couldn’t think about that now, I had to concentrate on Summer, Lily and my son. I needed to stay in control so I could make any decisions required to help my family.
