Komike is the annual comic market, a huge event where people come to sell their dōjinshi.

< HERO SHOWS

Power Rangers
gorenjā
The Power Rangers was a remix of this classic Japanese hero show. Spandex, karate, and plotlines bordering on abstractions.
Masked Rider
kamen raidā
The Masked Rider is a guy who transforms into a gigantic superhero on a motorcycle with special grasshopper powers.

Ultraman
urutoraman
Ultraman is the granddaddy of all hero shows. He shoots a “Specium Beam” out of his hand and can fly with jet-propelled boots.

< OTHER ANIME / MANGA RELATED ACTIVITIES
Cosplay
kosupurei
“Cosplay” is the practice of dressing up like your favorite animated characters. It’s like yiffy but not quite as creepy.
Maid cafes
meido kissa
This is a café where guys go to be served by girls dressed up in maid outfits, like the girls in a comic book.

Butler cafes
shitsuji kissa
Girls, as well, can go have their coffee served by men in butler outfits. It’s only fair.

Action figures
figyua
Action figures are very popular among the otaku crowd. You don’t play with them—you just set them on the top of your bookshelf and sigh, “Moē…”

Plastic models
puramo
Plastic models may be the kind of thing that your dad played with, but in Japan they are still very popular.

Goth/Lolita fashion
gosurori kei
Goth/Lolita fashion is basically just goth for little Japanese girls. Cute and scary, like everything else in Japan.
