“Yes I shagged him. He was good, in fact he was incredible, he bonked me senseless that’
s all there is to tell!” The woman from the sitting room, who had been standing in the doorway, came in and looked at Sam with disgust and looked at Lisa with equal displeasure. She picked up a bottle of wine and looked Sam up and down before she retreated to the lounge.

Lisa pressed her more but the tears began to well up in her eyes. Sam couldn’t hold back.

“He was a total gentleman, Lisa. Everything you could ever want in a man. Promised he’
d call me but I haven

t heard anything from him,” she took another sip of champagne. Shook her head and said. “I just keep seeing that damn video all day and he looks so damn hot in it.” She sounded sulky and they both laughed. More people began to arrive and the party was in full swing. Sam didn’t
feel like staying much longer. She was being monopolized by a divorced banker who was boring her, by telling her all about his golf handicap. Then he assumed she was interested and asked her out to dinner on Saturday night. Sam smiled sweetly and agreed. He was boring but he was pleasant to look at. As she looked for Lisa, her cell phone rang. She didn’t recognize the number.
“Hello!” there was a short pause then the line crackled and went dead. Sam muttered something and went to get her jacket. As she was saying goodbye to Lisa and Des her phone rang again.
As before, it crackled and went dead. Sam swore and left. Her battery was getting low but if it rang again, she thought that she would not answer it. She guessed that it was Dan, drunk and being a nuisance pranking her phone.

She opened the door of her apartment and the phone was ringing. She raced to it, picked it up and said:

“Hello!” She was almost out of breath, there was a short pause. Then a familiar voice said:

“Hey Sam, is that you babe?” The sexy accent belonged to Jay.

Her heart skipped a beat. He sounded so good. “How have you been doin?” He asked. Sam didn’t want to sound too eager, but it was so good to hear his voice again.

“Pretty good thanks. Congratulations on your video!” She tried to sound indifferent. “I hear it’
s a success”. Did he pick up the distance in her voice? She didn’t know.

“Thanks. The song is doin pretty good. Sam,” he said. “Sorry about not calling sooner,” He sounded genuinely sorry. But Sam knew that behind that façade, he wasn’
t. He felt a twinge of guilt that was all. “Did you see the video?” He asked.
Of course I have
! She thought to herself and of how seeing the video drove her insane with longing. She said:

“That’
s OK, I wasn

t expecting you to. I know how busy you are!” Her voice was shaky. It threatened to give away how she really felt. “How

s the tour?”
Shagging lots of girls are you?
Is what she wanted to say but didn’t. She couldn’t believe how his not calling had hurt her so much.

“Yeah it’
s good. Be finished next week. Then its home to LA.” Jay sounded very upbeat. And he was oblivious to the coolness in her voice. “Sam gotta go. I

m going on stage in five… I

ll call you later babe!” Before she could reply, the line had gone dead.

A tear ran down her face. She knew that in the weekend they had shared, he had taken her heart, played with it, threw it around, teased it and then cast it aside like a dirty old shoe. As she put the receiver back in its cradle, she noticed four messages. Automatically she hit the play button. It crackled into life.

Hey Babe, it’s Jay how ya doin? I guess you

re out call you soon.”

“Babe, pick up Darlin, its
Jay here. Talk to you soon.”

“It’s me again, call later.”

“Darlin, I feel like I’
m talkin to myself. I

ve missed you.”

Sam stared at the answer machine. She did hear that right? He said he missed her. She hoped he didn’t pick up on her attempt to be distant. Sam hoped he

d call back.

An hour and a half later Sam was staring at the phone in her silk chemise, willing it to ring. But it didn’t. She knew that Glam Metal played for nearly two hours and it would be a while yet before Jay would call her, if indeed he did call back.

Chapter Nine

The shrill sound of the phone ringing; made Sam jump. She looked at the clock. It was just gone two a.m.

“Yes.” She said half asleep. There was a crackle.

“Babe, I can remember how you look when you wake up.” Jay’
s husky voice whispered in her ear. Sam smiled. “What are you wearing sexy?” He asked with that devilish teasing in his voice.

“Jay, it’
s so good to hear your voice!” She said without thinking, almost dreaming. He laughed.

“I missed you too babe,” He kissed the phone and Sam giggled. She was melting. “I did want to call you but we were so busy. That sounds like an excuse doesn’t
it babe?” He asked but not meaning to. He explained that after he left the apartment he went to the hotel and the guys had teased him so much about her. He almost turned round and came back to the apartment. “I didn’t want to leave you Sam! This has never happened to me, but hey I

m saying too much.”
No don

t stop!
Sam almost shouted.

“Damon called and told me he had coffee with you. I got so jealous.” Jay laughed. Sam sat up in the bed. Was Damon the reason he was now calling her? Oh please no, she was pleading silently.

“Sam,” Jay was saying. “Can you make it babe?”
What?
She didn’t
hear what he said.

“Say again, I was just sitting up”. It sounded better than what she was thinking.

“I asked you if you’
d come to LA next week?”
He wants me to come to LA. Oh god yes Jay
.

“Why do you want me to come?” He laughed loudly.

“You look and sound angelic when you orgasm. I want to see it again. They deleted it from the computer.” Sam laughed too. She had let herself walk into that. She had forgotten his wicked side. “Please Sam, will you?” She didn’t
think twice about that.

“Of course I’
ll come to LA.” They talked for a while. He told her about the concert and how the crowd went mad and Nick left the stage twice with two groupies.
And you, Jay, how many groupies did you have?
Sam wondered.

“Babe, it’
s late there and you sound tired. I

ll call you tomorrow. OK?” They said goodnight. But Sam couldn’t sleep. She was too excited. The next morning she showered and phoned Lisa and asked her to meet her for coffee at the café on the waterfront. Twenty minutes later she was sitting inside sipping a latte. Lisa arrived with dark glasses on. She smiled and as she sat down, she called to Dawn the waitress to bring her a strong coffee.

“What’
s up?” Sam smiled at her broadly.

“You look awful Lisa. Good party was it?” Sam teased. Lisa growled a response but her coffee arrived before Sam could reply.

They chatted for a while, about the party and Sam

s sudden departure last night.

“Dominic, told us about your date for tonight!” Lisa was saying, Sam looked at her with a quizzical expression on her face. “The banker you were so engrossed with last night for so long. You haven’
t forgotten you have a date have you?” She was teasing Sam.

“Jay called me last night.” She said suddenly. Lisa shrieked. Sam hushed her. They laughed.

“What did you do?”  Sam told her how cool and calm she had been earlier when he first called but later after the concert, he had totally disarmed her.

“He has asked me to go to LA next week to meet him.” Lisa let out a tiny scream. Sam told her to calm down. “Will you come with me Lisa? I know it’
s a lot to ask but I need you there with me.” Sam pleaded with her.

“Oh Sam, you know I’
ll go.” Sam hugged her friend. She knew she could count on her. “Only if you do me a favour.” Sam raised her eyebrow.

“Please for the love of sanity; do not go on this date tonight!” They both laughed.

Chapter Ten

The flight was long and boring and the meal was bland. First class meals weren’t much better than economy. Jay had insisted on paying for their flight. He told her he would send a car to meet her at LAX.

After they collected their luggage, they proceeded to go to the arrivals area. Sam couldn’t believe just how crowded it was. She thought that Heathrow was bad but this was unbelievable.

The heat struck them almost immediately. Sam scanned the lines of chauffeurs to see if they could find one that was waiting for them. But she couldn’t.

There was a bit of a shouting match across from where they were standing. Lisa looked over and laughed and said:

“Paparazzi, wonder who they’
re harassing?” A big bloke with dark shades and an ear piece approached and between him and another equally big hulk was Jay, all five foot eight of him. He was looking very hot with a long white coat, black designer shirt open almost to his waist and his famous dark glasses. Almost in slow motion he walked over to them, looking hot as hell.

A massive grin on his face, widened when he saw Sam. The crowds were going wild as he passed. Sam smiled as he came closer and pulled her into his arms and kissed her. Turning to Lisa, he gave her a big hug and kiss. And with an arm around both of them, the two body guards ushered them to the waiting limo.

Inside it was cool and Jay opened a bottle of champagne and poured each of them a glass. He was looking intently at Sam. She felt his eyes burning through her dress, almost to the very core of her soul.
“It’
s been crazy here since we got back from tour,” Jay was saying. “I hope that didn’t upset either of you?” Lisa smiled and said sarcastically, it happened to her all the time. They laughed and Jay refilled their glasses.

As they sped out of LA up into the hills Jay casually rested his hand on Sam

s thigh. His touch sent shockwaves through her. That familiar feeling of wanting him returned. She wondered if he felt it too. Or perhaps the eight weeks that they were apart made him wish he hadn

t asked her to come to LA.
