The lady started crying and held onto Deanna tighter, her other arm wrapped across her stomach.

“Where did the car hit you? In the stomach?” Deanna asked her.

“No, my hip. I hope the baby is okay,” Olivia said, rubbing her aching stomach.

“You’re pregnant?” Deanna asked worried.

“Yes, I’m eleven weeks. I’ve just had my first scan,” she replied. “I’m sorry, but I think I’ve just wet my pants,” she said, her voice embarrassed and apologetic.

Deanna looked at her properly and was appalled to see the woman’s jeans darken between her thighs with blood, and she had the terrible realisation that this lady might be losing her baby.

“Nate, can you tell the ambulance to hurry up,” Deanna said, trying to keep the panic out of her voice so as not to scare Olivia.

Nate glanced down in confusion and then understood what was happening. He closed his eyes in anguish for the poor woman, but also thinking that this could have happened to Deanna instead. He was thankful they’d decided to wait before starting a family. This was why he was so hesitant to have a child. If he was to lose Deanna and their baby, it would completely destroy him.

As Nate walked away he continued to talk on his phone, standing a discreet distance away so Olivia couldn’t hear what he was saying to the emergency services.

“Olivia, talk to me. Is there anyone I can ring for you?” Deanna asked, knowing she needed to keep the woman awake and alert.

“My husband. I was speaking to him on the phone when I was hit. He’s probably worried sick.”

“Okay.”

Deanna looked around and saw a mobile phone lying on the floor a few feet away. She stretched and was able to reach it. Swiping a finger across the screen she was thankful to see that it hadn’t been damaged during the incident.

“Olivia, what’s your husband’s name?”

“Quinn Glenn,” Olivia replied. “Please, don’t go,” Olivia continued, panic in her voice as Deanna had pulled slightly away to phone Olivia’s husband.

“It’s alright, I’m not going anywhere. Just keep calm. Nate, please could you call her husband and tell him what’s happened. She was speaking to him before the accident. He’s called Quinn Glenn,” Deanna said to him.

Nate looked surprised. He’d heard of the man. Quinn Glenn owned a large chain of nightclubs throughout Scotland and had a reputation of being a very astute businessman.

“Alright babe. Olivia, the ambulance should be here any minute,” Nate said just as the sound of sirens could be heard in the distance.

A small crowd had gathered asking if they could offer any help, but there wasn’t much any of them could do but try to keep her warm with their jackets.

Deanna continued to speak quietly and comfortingly to Olivia, soothing her the best she could when she became upset. After a few tense moments, Olivia managed to calm down. Deanna looked over at Nate who was talking rapidly on the phone and running his hands through his hair, showing that he was anxious.

As the ambulance pulled up to the side of the road, the Paramedics jumped out and quickly assessed Olivia. She was fading into unconsciousness so Deanna had to hurriedly explain everything that had happened and also quietly mentioned the baby. The Paramedics immediately understood the urgent need to get her to a hospital.

They moved her onto a stretcher and then ran towards the ambulance. However Olivia came round and called out hysterically for Deanna so she ran over and tightly held her hand.

“Please, don’t leave me,” Olivia whispered, staring at Deanna with tears pouring down her face.

“You can come with her. Please hurry, we need to get her to hospital,” a Paramedic said to Deanna.

“Nate,” Deanna shouted and he ran over to her side. “I’m going to go with her,” Deanna said to him, knowing she couldn’t leave the woman.

“Okay, I’ll meet you there. Which hospital?” Nate asked.

“Glasgow Royal Infirmary,” one of the Paramedics replied.

“I’ll tell her husband and meet you there,” Nate said and quickly kissed her as he moved away.

Deanna climbed inside the ambulance and stared at Nate as the doors slammed shut and they sped away, sirens and lights flashing.

CHAPTER 16

“Where the hell is she?” a worried voice shouted as a man charged into the emergency waiting room.

Nate jumped to his feet, instantly recognising Olivia’s husband. Quinn Glenn was a tall athletic man with short brown hair and dark blue eyes, wearing an expensive tailored suit.

“Mr. Glenn? I’m Nate. I spoke to you on the phone,” Nate approached the man who held out his hand which he shook in greeting.

Nate didn’t know much about Quinn, only that he’d been born and raised in one of the toughest neighborhoods in Glasgow and had ruthlessly fought his way to become one of the most successful businessmen in the region.

“Alright Nate. Where’s Olivia?”

“I’m no’ sure. I’ve just got here. My wife went with her in the ambulance and I’ve been waiting to hear what’s happening.”

“Thanks for calling me. I need to find out what’s going on,” Quinn said as he walked away to the reception desk.

Just as he reached the desk Deanna entered the waiting room from a side door, looking tired and disheveled, and Nate jogged over to her.

“How is she?” Nate asked her as Quinn spotted them talking and rushed over.

“Where’s Olivia? What’s happening?” Quinn asked, panic filling him. Deanna realised that this was Olivia’s obviously worried husband.

“Why don’t we sit down and I’ll tell you what I know,” Deanna said, gesturing to a private room in the corner.

Nate led the way into the small room and closed the door behind them to give them privacy to talk.

“I’ve had to leave as they took her into theatre. They’re not exactly sure what’s happening but they said someone will let you know soon. She was clipped in the side by the car. They don’t know the extent of damage but there was some bleeding,” Deanna tried to explain.

“You mean, it could be something to do with the baby?” Quinn asked hesitantly.

“Possibly. They’re in there now trying to discover what’s happened. I’m sorry,” she said as Quinn dropped his head into his hands.

“This is our first baby. I can’t believe this is happening. I’d only just left her after the first scan. Fuck . . . I feel sick,” Quinn said weakly as his body shook.

Deanna watched him in concern and then looked over at Nate who was looking stricken and unsure what to do. As their eyes connected she saw in them the torment that Nate felt that this might have been them.

After a few minutes Nate decided to go and get them all a drink and Quinn left to speak to the receptionist, trying to find out any information. Deanna sat staring at the wall and her mind could finally think properly for the first time.

She jerked upright as she clearly remembered that the car purposely aimed for them, or more importantly, at her. There was no way it was a runaway car or simply an accident, the car was on a direct path and if it hadn’t been for Nate’s quick reactions she would have been hit.

Misery filled Deanna as she realised that her tormentor had again come after her, but instead had now harmed an innocent woman and most likely killed her unborn child.

Tears poured down her face and Nate found her crying. He rushed over to her side and wrapped her in his warm arms.

“Sshhh. . . it’s okay, babe,” Nate soothed, stroking her hair as he rocked her. He was still shaken with what occurred and dreaded to think what could have happened to her if he hadn’t been there.

“No Nate. It’s not okay. This happened because of me,” she sobbed, not having heard the door opening.

“What d’ya mean this was because of you?” asked an angry voice that Deanna recognised as Quinn’s.

“Deanna, we don’t know for sure that this involves you,” Nate said trying to calm her down.

“Don’t be daft. Of course it is. Everything is,” she said miserably.

“Will someone please explain to me what you’re talking about?” Quinn said in a deceptively calm voice.

“Deanna has recently been attacked. Someone is stalking her and we don’t know who it is,” Nate started to explain but Quinn interrupted him.

“Wait, I remember you now, it was all over the papers. Your ex tried to kill you, and you’re the President of the Ravens MC aren’t you?” Quinn asked Nate, as he finally took proper notice of the leather cut the giant in front of him was wearing.

“Aye, I am. Deanna ran away from her violent ex and came to us for help. I fell for her and her daughter the minute I met them. But Lee, her ex, wouldn’t leave her alone and followed her here. The bastard is rotting away in prison after what he did to her. But strange things have been happening recently and we have no idea why and who it could be. My brother and the Polis are looking into it but haven’t found anything yet,” Nate finished his explanation.

Quinn stood looking thoughtful as he stared intently at Deanna and after a few moments she became nervous with the silence.

“How can you blame yourself for this? If some deranged bastard is after you then it’s hardly your fault and you can’t blame yourself. Please don’t think I’ll hold anything against you. Olivia certainly won’t. She’s too kind and gentle to ever do that,” Quinn replied quietly, thinking fondly of his wife.

Deanna smiled her thanks just as the door opened and a Doctor entered the room.

“Who is Olivia Glenn’s husband?” the man addressed the room.

“Me. I’m Quinn Glenn.”

“Is there someone where we can talk, sir?” the Doctor asked.

“It’s fine here. I don’t mind Nate and Deanna hearing this,” Quinn responded.

“Okay. Your wife wasn’t too badly injured from the accident. Although she will be sore and have bruising on her waist and hip. But I do have some bad news. The impact of the car caused her to miscarry the baby. I’m very sorry. Is there is anything I can do for you?”

“Please can I see her?” Quinn asked quietly, his heart breaking.

“They’re just preparing to move her onto a ward. We want to keep her in for observation. I’ll arrange for one of the nurses to take you to see her,” the Doctor replied kindly.

“Thank you Doctor,” Quinn said, his voice lacking emotion as he sank into one of the chairs as the Doctor left.

“I’m so sorry Quinn,” Deanna whispered, tears clogging her throat.

“Thank you Deanna. Will you two please wait around?” Quinn asked, surprising them.

“Of course,” Nate replied without hesitation.

“Thanks,” Quinn started to cry. Nate immediately placed his hand on his back in comfort and support as Deanna left the room to find out which room Olivia was being moved to.

About an hour later Quinn returned saying that Olivia wanted to speak to them. They followed him to the ward and then hesitated outside the room, Nate and Deanna waited in the corridor as Quinn walked inside the room. They heard Olivia crying and Deanna glanced through the open door to see Quinn cradling his wife.

“Oh God, this is awful,” Deanna whispered and Nate wrapped his arms around her.

“I know babe. I know,” he said quietly, watching the pair inside the room.

“Deanna,” Olivia tentatively called and Deanna pulled away from Nate to see both Olivia and Quinn watching them.

“Hello Olivia. How are you feeling?” Deanna said. She knew it was a stupid thing to ask after what Olivia had just suffered, but she didn’t know what else to say.

“I’m sore. I feel so empty inside. Everything was going so well too,” Olivia started to cry softly again.

Deanna glanced at Nate desperately as she was filled with guilt and he immediately came to her side.

“It’s okay Deanna. We’ll catch who did this. I’ve spoken to Ethan and he’s already investigating,” he said quietly.

“What? What’s happening? I don’t understand,” Olivia asked as she overheard Nate’s comment.

“You’re new friend Deanna stupidly thinks that what happened is her fault,” Quinn said and then went on to explain everything they’d discussed in the waiting room and also details about Deanna’s past.

As Quinn talked Nate understood that he was just trying to put to the back of his mind the loss that he and his wife had just endured.

At the end of it Olivia looked stunned.

“I remember seeing it in the papers. Your ex is a monster after what he did to you. I’m glad he’s locked up in prison. You have a very impressive husband Deanna and he’s the President of the Ravens Motorcycle Club too. I’ve heard a lot of good things about them,” Olivia said and Quinn nodded in agreement, he also knew a lot about the MC and their related businesses. Nate was a bit embarrassed at the compliment but Deanna smiled, proud of her husband.

“So, if your ex is in prison then who else could it be?” Olivia asked.

“That’s what we’re trying to find out. My brother is the owner of McKnights and it’s his top priority,” Nate explained.

“It is?” asked Deanna. She was shocked to think that her brother-in-law was taking her case so seriously as to make it his most important case.

“Of course. He loves you and wants the fucker caught before anything else happens to you. We don’t know that what occurred today is related though,” Nate said.
