BROOKLYN

“I’m going to sit down. This boy is wearing me out,” I told Taylor. Taylor and I had taken the kids to a local fair not too far from our house. DJ was full of energy, and I was tired of chasing him. Dominic was supposed to come with us, but he couldn’t make it. His parents had gotten some new furniture, and he and David had to help their father move it. Although I swore that I wouldn’t, I ended up hooking up with Dominic again. As wrong as I know it was, the heart can’t help who it loves, and I love Dominic more than words can say. It wasn’t that he was my first or the father of my son it’s because of who he is as a person. He’s so attentive and selfless, and that makes me love him even more. With his looks and finances, he could be selfish and arrogant if he wanted to be, but he’s nothing like that. He makes sure that DJ and I are straight before anything else. If I didn’t know for a fact that he was married it would be hard to tell.

“I’m ready to go. We’ve been out here for hours,” Taylor said. I left my car at home while DJ and I rode with Taylor and her girls in Bryce’s car. My brother and I were better than ever after having a long talk a few months ago. I realized how wrong I was for trying to involve him in me and Dominic’s business. They were friends, so I understood his decision to stay out of it. He tried to warn me, but I didn’t listen.

“Let’s go get some ice cream,” I suggested.

“Girl, anywhere that I can sit down is cool with me,” Taylor replied. We gathered up all of the kids and got them into the car. It was already dark outside, but it was still early.

“Ice cream mommy,” DJ sang over and over. He was talking so good, and he wasn’t even two years old yet. All of my hard work with him was paying off.

“Okay baby, we’re going to get some now,” I replied. Taylor parked in front of the ice cream parlor, and all of us got out. We ordered what everyone wanted and took a seat at one of the tables.

“Have you heard from Kevin since everything went down with y’all?”  Taylor asked me. I ended up telling her and Candace what happened, but I never told anyone else.

“Yeah, his crazy ass still calls sometimes, but I never answer. I blocked his number, but I know he calls from other places. I don’t answer any numbers that I don’t recognize.”

“He really is nuts. I can’t see what he possibly has to say to you.”

“Girl, I don’t know and I really don’t care.”

“Are y’all ready to go?” Taylor asked the kids after we’d been sitting there for a while. I wiped DJ’s hands and mouth, and we were on our way again. We hadn’t even made it to the bridge good enough before my baby had fallen asleep in his car seat. My nieces were both playing on their handheld games while Taylor and I talked.

“Look at this Jackass riding so close behind me,” Taylor complained.

“They don’t even have any lights on,” I observed as I looked behind me. It was hard to make out the make and model of the dark colored pick-up truck that was trailing us. The windows were heavily tinted so I couldn’t even see the driver.

“Oh my God!” Taylor screamed when the truck slammed into the back of us. My nieces were screaming, but I was trying to remain calm.

“Taylor drive faster and try to lose them,” I suggested in a panic. Taylor did as I instructed, but the truck kept up with us.

“Ahhh,” Taylor screamed when the truck hit us again. This time the screaming woke my baby up. He too was crying loudly from his car seat.

“Taylor try not to lose control of the wheel. I’m calling the police.” As soon as the operator came to the phone I started giving her our location and telling her what was going on. She assured me that help was on the way, but I just hope it came soon.

“Call Bryce,” Taylor said. Before I had a chance to dial out, we got hit again causing Taylor to lose control of the wheel. The car veered too far to the right, and we were plunging into a ditch. Taylor’s head was bouncing all over the place, and her forehead was dripping blood. I heard the sirens in the distance the moment the car came to a complete stop. I looked back at the kids to make sure they weren’t hurt. Besides being scared and crying, they seemed to be fine.

“Are you alright Taylor?” I asked my sister-in-law. Blood was trickling down her face, but she was still conscious.

“My head is hurting, but I’m good. As long as the kids are alright that’s all that matters,” she replied. I grabbed my baby’s bag and gave her some of his wipes to clean herself up. I pulled out my phone to call Dominic and my family to tell them what was happening.

The police took our statements, but there wasn’t much that we could tell them. A dark colored pick-up truck wasn’t much of a description. The EMT’s were called out to check on us, and they insisted that we were taken to the hospital. They wanted to check out Taylor’s head wound and make sure the kids were alright. Dominic and my family were already in route.

After getting DJ checked out, it was my turn to be seen. Candace and Co-Co had made it to us so they sat outside until I got checked out. Once I was done, they came back and found me sitting on the edge of the bed in a daze.

“What’s wrong Brook?” My cousins asked me. I looked into their eyes and started crying like a baby.

DOMINIC

I rushed through the hospital’s emergency room in search of my family. When Brooklyn called and told me that they had been in a car accident, my whole world stopped. I was at my parents’ house with David helping my father move some furniture when she called. I dropped everything and rushed out of the house with my mama and David right behind me. My father stayed behind with Nyla and Ivan, but he made us promise to call and keep him updated. My mama was already crying even though I told her that they were alright. We walked up to the nurse’s station, but we spotted Candace in the hallway holding my baby.

“Come here grandma’s baby,” my mama said rushing to get DJ. I looked him over just to be sure that he was straight.

“Where’s Brooklyn?” I asked Candace.

“She’s still in the back. Let me show you where she is,” she offered.

“Mama, watch him until I get back.”

“Boy, get out of my face. This is my baby too,” she said looking at me like I was crazy. Her tears had dried up once she saw that DJ was alright.

I followed Candace down the hallway to a small room where Brooklyn was. Her eyes were puffy and red, letting me know that she had been crying.

“Are you alright baby?” I asked while sitting down next to her.

“I see super sperm has finally made it,” Co-Co said laughing.

“Shut up Co-Co. Let’s go so they can talk,” Candace yelled.

Brook was still crying silently, and I really didn’t know why. I knew that she was probably a little shaken up, but everybody made it out fine.

“What’s wrong Brook? Everybody is alright,” I said while hugging her tightly.

“I’m not alright Dominic, I’m pregnant,” she sobbed. My entire body went numb after hearing what she’d just said. It’s not that I was mad or disappointed it was actually my confirmation. It’s been a little over a month since Kennedi found out about me buying Brooklyn a car. She’s been trying hard to work on our marriage, but it just wasn’t happening. The sex was forced, and the conversation was nonexistent. I was at the end of my rope with pretending to be happy when I really wasn’t. The only thing I constantly thought about was Brooklyn and my son. David always said that I would know what to do when the time came, and the time was now. I wanted out of my marriage and Brooklyn just gave me the perfect opportunity to end it. My heart is with her and my son so that was where I should be too.

“It’s all good baby, you know I got you,” I assured her.

“It’s not all good Dominic. Kennedi is not just your girlfriend anymore she’s your wife. I can’t believe I keep making these same stupid ass mistakes,” she cried.

“You didn’t make a mistake Brook, I did,” I confirmed as I pulled her onto my lap.

“We both made a mistake Dominic, but we can’t keep this baby,” she replied.

“This pregnancy is not a mistake, me marrying Kennedi was,” I confessed. “And you’re keeping my baby.”

“Why do you think getting married was a mistake?”

“I knew it all along. I don’t even know why I went through with it to begin with,” I admitted.

“I can’t believe I’m three months pregnant and didn’t know it. I didn’t even feel sick like I did with DJ.”

“That’s because your cycle isn’t regular. I told you that your ass was getting bigger,” I said laughing. Brooklyn was getting thick, but her stomach wasn’t big. I never even assumed that she could be pregnant again. I told her that I liked the extra weight she put on and I really did.

“My mama is going to die when she finds out,” Brooklyn said.

“I don’t know why. Nobody takes care of you and my baby except for me. You don’t ask anybody for anything, and you never will if I can help it. I’ll tell everybody if you’re scared,” I offered.

“Kennedi is going to kill you.”

“That’s over and done with. You might as well make some room for me in your closet,” I said honestly.

“I don’t want you to do that just because I’m pregnant Dominic. I know you’ll take care of this baby just like you take care of DJ.”

“I shouldn’t have done it to begin with. Just know that last night was your last night sleeping alone,” I promised her.

“Let’s go find your mommy and daddy,” I heard my mama saying. Brooklyn jumped out of my lap and met her in the hallway.

“Hey baby,” she cooed when she saw DJ.

“How are you feeling Brooklyn?” My mama asked while giving her a hug.

“I’m fine, thank you,” she replied.

“Your mama and your brothers are out front,” she informed Brook.

“Okay, I’m just waiting to be discharged.”

“Alright, well, I’ll be waiting for you out front, Dominic,” my mama said before leaving. The nurse gave Brook her discharge papers soon after and we were leaving too.

“Let your mama or one of your brothers take you home. I’ll be over there as soon as I take my mama home,” I told Brook before we made it to the front.

As soon as we got up front, Brooklyn’s family were all over her making sure she was straight. Taylor had a bandage covering part of her forehead, but it was nothing major. We all said our goodbyes and went our separate ways.

“I know they were shaken up, but thank God nobody was seriously hurt,” my mama said while we were in route to her house.

“I know, even DJ’s bad ass looked like he was scared,” David said laughing.

“My baby is not bad,” my mama said taking up for her grandson. “And he’s my only one so I’ll never admit it if he is.”

“He’s your only one for now,” I chimed in.

“Oh Lord, who’s pregnant now?  I hope nobody was dumb enough to let your crazy ass get them pregnant,” she said looking at David.

“Hell no, I shoot all of my babies right down their throats,” he said laughing.

“As nasty as that sounds, I’m happy to hear it. The world does not need any of your offspring in it right now. So, I’m guessing it’s Kennedi again right?” She asked looking at me.

“No, it’s Brooklyn,” I replied just above a whisper.

“You have got to be fucking kidding me!” She howled. “You can’t be that stupid. You’ve only been married for six months Dominic.”

“I knew it! I told you that she was going to get pregnant again,” David yelled excitedly.

“David, don’t make me fuck you up. This shit is not funny. I told you to leave that damn girl alone, but you didn’t listen. Now she’s pregnant again. How do you think that’s going to make your wife feel?” My mama yelled. I was parked in front of her house, but she was still sitting in my truck going off on me. I knew better than to say anything. I had to just sit there and listen until she was tired of talking.

“Let me go inside before I end up hurting you, but I’m not done with your ass, and you can believe that shit. I’m just too upset to continue. David don’t even bring your ass back in my house tonight. You got your keys so get in your car and go,” she fussed while slamming my door. We watched until she went inside and closed her front door.

“I’m always getting in trouble when you get somebody pregnant,” David said.

“I already know,” I replied. I didn’t plan to tell my mama the way I did, but the opportunity presented itself. I was happy that I got it over with even though I pissed her off.

“I’m going home, call me tomorrow,” David said getting out of my truck. I wanted to go to Brooklyn’s, but I headed home to grab a few things instead. I also decided to get some things off of my chest with Kennedi. I didn’t want her find out about Brooklyn being pregnant from anyone else but me. I was kind of nervous when I pulled up to the house, but I got out and made my way inside. I’ve only been married for six months, and I was ready to end it already. There was no need to prolong something that was a long time coming anyway.

“Hey baby,” Kennedi said when I walked inside. She jumped into my arms and kissed all over me like she didn’t just see me this morning.

“Hey,” I replied a little shocked by how she was behaving.

“I have a surprise for you,” she said while leading me upstairs. I wanted to tell her that I had one for her as well, but I kept the comment to myself. My mouth dropped to the floor when I saw everything that she had done. There was a small decorated table that sat in the middle of the floor. There were all kinds of fruit and chocolates on it, along with a bottle of red wine. Candles were the only thing that lit up the room, besides the huge smile that adorned Kennedi’s face. For any other man, this would be the perfect romantic setting. Unfortunately, it didn’t do anything for me. I hated to spoil her good mood, but I didn’t have a choice.

“Kennedi we need to talk,” I said turning on the lights. It felt like deja vu with me telling her the exact same thing when Brooklyn was pregnant with DJ.

“Yes, we do,” she sang happily. “Sit down baby.”

“I don’t want to sit down. Just let me say what I have to say before I lose my nerve to say it.”

She stopped smiling when she took note of the seriousness of my tone and took a seat at the table.

“What’s wrong baby? You’re starting to scare me.”

“Honestly, I have love for you Kennedi, but this is just not working for me anymore,” I admitted.

“You have love for me? I’m your wife, and all you can say is you have love for me?” She retorted.

“I’m tired of lying to you and I’m damn sure tired of lying to myself. I’m not in love with you, and I can't fake it any more.”

“I know that things have been kind of rough with us lately, but we can fix this. Don’t give up on us without even trying,” she begged.

“It’s not going to work because my heart is not in it. It’s not fair for me to string you along knowing that I want to be with somebody else.”

“I knew it! I knew that you were still messing with her. You swore to me that it was over, and you lied. I can’t believe that you’re trying to leave me to be with her,” she cried.

“I’m sorry for hurting you again. I’m just tired of trying to make you and everybody else happy. I’m denying myself of happiness in the process.”

“That bitch doesn’t make you happy. You only feel like that because she has your baby,” she yelled in disbelief.

“She’s pregnant again,” I blurted out quickly. I looked at her expecting her to go crazy and start throwing a tantrum like she did the first time, but she didn’t. She was calm as she sat there with her legs crossed staring back at me.

“Kennedi did you just hear me? I said that Brooklyn is having my baby again,” I repeated.

“Yeah, I heard you loud and clear,” she replied. She stood to her feet and walked into the closet. I assumed that she was going to start packing her clothes. I really didn’t want her to do that because I want to be the one to leave. She can keep this place, and I’ll go live with Brook and my son. After being gone for a minute, she came back out and handed me a piece of paper. This time I’m the one who had to take a seat once I read what it said.

“What the fuck is this?” I asked even though I’d already read it.

“Tell Brooklyn that I said congratulations, I’m having your baby too…”
