Shades of Wolf 3

As Love Shifts

Ever’s prophecy seems to be coming true, as the northeast states are hit with a hurricane of epic proportions. It is up to Ever, her men, and her magic to keep the werewolf clan alive in underground bunkers that are only half completed.

When a shifter named Chirrot flies over to let them know that his family is still alive, Ever is reminded of how sinfully handsome the man is. Chirrot has never tried to hide his desire for Ever, but it couldn’t come at a worse time for Kris. After losing his eye protecting Ever, he is feeling inadequate and the last thing he wants is to witness Ever’s veiled attraction for the blond-haired shifter.

As the water recedes and they can leave the bunkers, Chirrot, who had the potential to destroy their relationship, proves that he is worthy of their respect.

DEDICATION

Thanks to my good friends, who support and encourage me to continue writing.

I have to admit, though, that I love to write and see what happens as the story progresses. No, I never know in advance, and usually when I think I know, it takes a turn and goes elsewhere. With a cup of coffee in hand, I will continue to do so until I run out of ideas.

Thanks also have to go out to my husband, who finds other things to do as I sit at the computer typing.

To you, my fans, I enjoy your feedback, and without you, I would be writing for only my own amusement. Thank you.

Chapter 1

Ever stood at the edge of the ditch, staring downward. “So you are telling me that I spent weeks making arrangements and getting the agreement of the entire clan to bring in workers and machines and they have now quit on me. Why?”

Gear grimaced at the angry tone in her voice. “Um, because the Parth family didn’t want them here, and they kind of ran them off the property with shotguns.”

It was an extreme struggle to moderate her voice and not start screaming at him. Faced with shotguns, she would probably have backed off also. It didn’t change the fact that she was furious and needed someone to vent on. “You were supposed to take care of this beforehand, Gear. Did you not explain to them what was happening and why?”

“Yes.”

“Did you not give them the notice, signed by their alpha to state the reason that we have chosen to put one of the five bunkers in this particular place?”

“Yes.”

Ever was quickly losing her cool. “So what the fuck happened? I have a wedding
I'm
in the middle of planning and I don’t need this shit right now.”

Her phone rang and Ever swished it open. “What?” she growled in a far too wolfy voice.

“Having a bad day, sweets?”

“You have no idea.”

Your
son wanted to say hi.”

They were always
her
children when they weren’t behaving. If nothing else, Liam’s comment made her laugh. Ever since the children had discovered that they could talk to Mommy over the phone, they had been having Liam or Daisy call her. “Put him on.”

“Hi, Mommy. We miss you. Come home. We want to play in the yard,” spouted Errant.

“You don’t need me to play in the yard. Have Daddy play with you.”

“No…” he whined. “Avia says Daddy too rough.”

Avia was slowly becoming more commanding like her mother, and the two boys listened to her impeccably. So much for Seren the alpha. At the current time that was Avia.

“Please let me talk to your sister, Errant.”

Ever could hear Avia giggling as she was given the phone. “Little miss, why did you tell your bothers that? Daddy Liam is always gentle when he plays with you. I have seen him.”

“I don’t know, Mommy. We don’t want to play with Daddy Liam. We want to play with you.”

“I’m sorry, but at the moment, Mommy is busy. I will be home a bit later for dinner and then I will play
.
O
kay
?

“Okay,” she replied with exasperation in her tone. Ever sighed. They were only eight months old and they walked and talked like four- or five-year-old children. Whoever had once told her that they would be driving her crazy was right. She loved them dearly, but they were a real handful.

Liam came back to the phone laughing. “Thank you. At least they are willing to now play with me again.
Your
daughter is incredible.”

My
daughter, huh? I was kind of in the middle of trying not to kill Gear. Can we talk at dinner?”

“Of course. I will see you then. Love you.”

“I love you, too.”

She walked back over to Gear. Luckily the call had brightened her mood slightly.

“Okay, now that is settled. Can you please tell me what happened or why it happened?”

“Because they don’t want a bunker on their land. They said it isn’t fair. Maybe you should go talk to them yourself. I have a feeling that they were insulted by the fact that you sent a notice rather than talking to them directly.”

“I sent a notice because everyone got a notice. As I said, I’m trying to do this, arrange for food shipments, and also plan a wedding. That is all while three terror children run around under my feet.” Ever suddenly realized that she had said three instead of four. They had four children, but it wasn’t known around the tribe that Lash was kept locked in his own space. He couldn’t be trusted and for the most part, her son remained as a nasty-tempered tiny wolf. “Sorry, three men, four children!”

She could tell that Gear was trying not to laugh at the final comment. It was a rather amusing statement. “I will go talk to them. Then I will call the contractor and see if this can be fixed. I guess you have the rest of the day to yourself. I will call you. Do we have anyone in this clan with construction experience besides you?”

“There are a few men, but none of them can handle anything this large in scale. As it is, I’m little more than a guard dog, because even I don’t know the logistics for building such a large underground structure. I understand steel, not concrete and tolerances for overhead weight.”

“I know. I just wanted someone with some idea of what was happening to oversee things. I know far less than you. Thank you, Gear.”

“I’m sorry.”

“This is not your fault. You just happened to be the only one that I could yell at. I’m sorry also.”

He smiled and headed to his truck. Ever debated if it was easier to drive her SUV or walk. The house was probably two miles from where she was standing and although she could use the exercise, she really wanted to get home. She climbed into the vehicle and drove the short distance. The elder Parth was sitting in a rocking chair on the huge porch. The place actually looked like an old Victorian mansion, but Ever had seen a wide variety of styles and colors on the clan’s estate. What the house or houses looked like was completely up to the whims of whoever owned the property. She parked the car and got out, smiling as she walked down the drive and up the stairs.

“Good afternoon.”

“I wouldn’t think it be too good for you.”

Ever had just identified the troublemaker. It was Willis Parth, the eldest of his surname. “Why is that, Willis?”

“My sons and I got rid of your trespassers. Who the hell do you think you are? Stupid little half-breed bitch gonna come and take our property to build some kind of new age underground houses. Don’t think we gonna allow that.”

Ever had two choices. Get back into her SUV and let Kris handle this, or stand her ground and deal with it herself. “We are not creating underground houses. We are creating safety shelters for your family and the entire clan. Yours is not the only property that we are building on. There are five shelters and they will be interlocking through underground tunnels. It just happens that your property is on the north grid. Once they are built, the trees will be replaced and you won’t even know that it is there unless the time comes when you need it to keep your family alive.”

“I been keeping my family alive just fine, missy.”

“My name is Ever, and I’m not discussing normal circumstances. These are for the future that the clan’s legend books speak of. It is a future where those who remain aboveground will die. I’m sure you don’t want that, now do you?”
