“The windows,” I whisper finally, turning to Scott. “We need to open all the windows in the house, and all the doors. Just for a few hours, to let the air back in properly.”

“Okay,” he replies, “and then -”

“Come on,” I add, grabbing his hand and leading him back through the forest, toward the house ahead. “Once the windows are open,” I continue, “we need to make a list of all the work that needs doing, and then we need to work out where to start. And we absolutely, definitely need to get rid of those locked doors that divide the house into two sides. It was built as one big house, and that's how it should always be.”

I always knew I'd come back to Auercliff one day. But I had no idea I'd stay.
