Darrel Ray has been a student of religion since college. With an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, he went on to Scarritt College for Christian workers in Nashville, Tennes, where he received a MA in Church and Community in 1974. Originally thinking he might go into the ministry, he soon realized that he believed very little of what he had been taught about religion. He changed focus to psychology and took a Doctor of Education degree from Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1978.

He continued to participate in several churches including teaching and preaching and serving a tenor soloist in several choirs. He also trained army and civilian chaplains and ministers in counseling techniques and consulted with several religious organizations until 1990 when he left religion altogether. Since that time he has turned his attention to the study of religion as a human phenomenon.

With the publication of his best-selling book,
The God Virus: How Religion Infects Our Lives and Culture
, Dr. Ray has been in great demand as a speaker throughout the United States and Europe. His talks are entertaining and informative, illustrating the psychology of religion and its negative impact on many aspects of life including sexuality, educational achievement, child development and marriage.
