Chapter 13

Life is a Gamble

February, 2014

Sadie sat at her desk, her heart thudding like the bass in a Lady Ga Ga song.  Her face was sharp and tight.  Her phone was ringing off the hook.  Her several e-mail accounts were full beyond capacity.

“The police ran in there on them like it was some sort of sting operation or something.  They caught Bella and Reena just about red handed.  And both dates had been set up by Nu Shu’s,” Sandie reported, sitting in her chair with her back bone-straight.

Sadie exhaled the cigarette smoke she had forgotten she’d been holding in her lungs.  She glanced out her window, running her hand through her flowing hair.

“I need you to make sure they make bond as soon as possible.  You’ve got access to the funds you need.  After that, all we’ve got is time to tell us what they said or didn’t say to the police,” Sadie said.

“You think they-”

“We’ll let time tell us…”

Sadie floated through the streets of DC like a Queen in an Executive Series Lincoln, chauffer driven.  Her ear stayed glued to the phone. She hit a button.

“Driver, take me to the following address.”

Sadie’s driver dropped her off at a neutral location, full of warehouses off of Bladensburg Rd in Northeast, DC.  She hopped out of the car wearing faded jeans, shoe-boots, and a baseball cap with her hair tucked in a bun beneath it.  She wore an off brand jacket and she carried no purse or ID.

Sadie entered the warehouse after she was buzzed in.  And within minutes, she was staring at hundreds of DVD’s in black cases.  Each case was numbered.

“You’ve got it all, snuff, D.R., everything you need; all the good stuff.  The stuff that floats this country, believe it or not.   I’ve also included a list of existing clients who will shock the novice.  One of em was just on TV backin a favorite candidate,” Cricket said with a yellow toothed smirk.

Sadie looked around, admiring the scenery.  “How can I be sure of what I’m getting?” she asked.

Cricket’s smile grew wider. “We gotta portable DVD player set up for ya.  Take your pick.  Each number stands for a preference.  Ha Ha.  Enjoy.”

Taking note of the few others standing in the warehouse, she briefly glanced at several types of movies.  When it came to the kind of movie Cricket had told her she could get a life sentence for, Sadie’s heart banged in her chest. She cut it off, panting, her face growing flush.

Cricket began to laugh. “A weak stomach, huh?”

Sadie remembered her mother being beaten and killed after being raped.  She remembered being slapped across the room.  She remembered how large the gentleman had appeared to be through her six year old eyes.

She remembered Byron Blount’s words from years ago. “…three hottest commodities in this county are…? ...drugs, mainstream religion, and pornography…”

She also remembered the figures Cricket had quoted for her. “…100,000 of em at full price. You’ll be sittin on $20 million…You got ta pay to play baby…”

Sadie pulled herself together.  “There’s something you didn’t mention,” she said.

“Oh, we’ve got your master burner.  We’ve got ya.  I’ve been doing this for some time,” Cricket responded.”

“…separate a mark from his money…”

As Sadie headed back home after having set up the pick-up for her first shipment of “advanced” porn, she realized she’d found yet another way to separate “marks” from their money.  And the money making potential surpassed anything she’d done yet.

When Sadie got home that night, ironically, Moe invaded her mind.  She gave him a call while lying in her king size canopy, four-poster bed.  She got no answer.  She called him again, changing her mind each time; she almost decided to leave him a message.

Laying back with her arms wrapped around her oversized pillow with the frilled border, she reminisced about the times she and Moe had spent together.  She’d grown to hate when he disappeared for weeks.

“People don’t care anymore.  People fall and hurt themselves and others laugh.  People see others getting hurt and they keep walking.  Like “better than me”.

“I remember doing a little time for assault.  A guy was in an alley trying to rape this girl.  He was beating this poor girl.  I shot over there and ended up losing my mind whipping this guy’s tail.  The girl ran.  I got a little time.  But I’d do it again.  I CARE what happens to people.  Plus, I HATE women beaters.”

“And would you believe that I CARE about you, Sadie,” he’d said, beginning to massage her shoulders.

Sadie squeezed the pillow between her legs, smiling to herself.  Moe would not leave her mind on this night.  She also thought about her mother.  And for the first time in life, she actually questioned something she’d said.

“…ain’t no good... men… the odds of you finding one is NONE…”

“We are classy, professional, high maintenance and yet, down for whatever.  We do it all.  But Nushu’s Escorts, Inc. is not all about selling gorgeous bodies. Not at all. It’s about selling an experience.  It’s about gestures, hints, body language, and seduction in the subtlest fashion.

“Underneath it all, a man will naturally want to lay between the legs of a gorgeous woman.  But we add to that the realistic possibility of this woman actually being attracted to him, feeling his vibes, actually into his topics of conversation.  We add to the equation that possibility of a fine, classy lady falling head over heels for an average, boring, sometimes totally unattractive man.  We sell an overall potential experience.  We at Nushu’s cast spells and create long term clients.  And by doing so, we live well, becoming a part and portion of these well-to-do men’s lives, locking onto their pockets for the long run,” Sadie said, standing before her group of seven new escorts.

“We are serious. You will be supplied with a week’s wardrobe.  You will be given image consulting courses.  And you will be given your own personal websites linked to our website.  You will be a force to be reckoned with.  And all I ask for from you is your loyalty and your best.”

Sadie had rolled the proverbial dice on many occasions.  But, with Nushu’s Escorts, Inc., Sadie had bet the entire pile.  And so far, she was winning in a major way.

“Sadie is the shit,” Lacy blurted from the back of the room.

Chapter 14

Biz Boom

April, 2014

Sadie felt that she’d chosen her battles wisely.  She’d cruised by women she once idolized, far surpassing their accomplishments.  She knew of many streetwalkers from Harlem who’d began “banging”, shooting heroin into their veins.  She knew of women her age who’d been on the grind with her at her earlier stages in life who now were obese, ugly, and drug addicted.  Sadie had seen the writings on the wall early in life.  Her goals had never stopped at merely surviving.  No indeed.  Sadie, in her own way, knew her worth.  And she felt that she was worth more than the devastating fate of most whom had started out the way she had.

Sadie had robbed, stolen from, lied to and swindled so many people over the course of her life that it was miracle fate hadn’t dealt her the hand of death.   She’d been raised in a world of wicked, dog-eat-dog principles, and she really didn’t know much else.  But, she’d forced herself to develop to a higher level, privately reading, taking various certifications and courses.  And once the internet had gained mass appeal, Sadie had also learned all she could.  But the knowledge she gained was still tied to the only way she’d ever learned to function: like a vicious she-wolf.

Nushu’s Escorts, Inc was her halo company.  The epitome of her life achievements.  She planned to put no more than 36 months into Nushus and XXXtra Productions.  Following that timeframe, she planned on sitting on so much that she would lay back and travel for the rest of her life.  Maybe find her “soul mate”, if such a creature existed.

“I’m making $25,000 -$45,000 per week with this ‘advanced porn’. Nushu’s is netting me triple digit thousands on an annual basis.  And all of this stuff is growing like a horny trick’s dick,”  Sadie said to herself while thumbing through a Cosmopolitan magazine.

XXXtra was drawing women ready to take it all off on camera like bright lights draw bugs.  Her “advanced porn” was mainly drawing wealthy and white collar white men like dog defecation drew flies.  Nushu’s was acquiring a new name for itself.  And Bella and Reena held strong under police pressure, proving their loyalty.

Sadie’s phone rang. “Homicide or some FBI or politicians are coming!” Sandie yelled into the phone.

Before Sadie could react to the news, she heard a solid knock on her office door.  Three gentleman stepped inside, each flashing authentic identification with badges plainly visible.

“FBI, Ms. Whyte.  We’d like to have a few words with you if you don’t mind,” one of the three agents said with a smug expression on his face.

Sadie glanced up at them without raising her head.  She disconnected her call and spoke. “Sure.  Have a seat,” she said.  “If you don’t mind.”

“No.  I don’t think so.  How about you taking a little trip with us… If YOU don’t mind,” the nicely dressed agent said with a touch of authority.

“Yes sir,” Sadie said, cleaning up her desk, her heart giving her chest a pounding like a Jon Jones victim.

Sadie the Lady, known to make such slick comments as “I’m a Lady.  I don’t perspire,” was now growing moist beneath her arms.  She held her chin high and followed the agents from her office.  She was a life-long criminal.  She’d had more brushes with law enforcement than some men had had pussy.  But it went with the territory, she figured.

*****

“Ms.  Whyte, are you familiar with this gentleman?” the cordial agent asked, sliding a picture across the table. Two other agents stood while the lead agent sat in front of Sadie in the sparsely furnished room.

Sadie, attempting to remain calm, picked the picture up and glanced at it.  Her eyes grew wide for a split second.  Her heart took an extra beat.  “Why? Should I know him?” she asked.

Sadie stared at the picture again.  And staring back at her was the well groomed face of Maurice “Moe” Garrett.  She said nothing.

“This gentleman, Ms. Whyte, has been implicated in a serious drug trafficking operation.  We believe he’s been trafficking large quantities of cocaine base through several surrounding states within the Northeast region.  We know you’ve escorted him on numerous occasions.  And if you aren’t involved in cocaine trafficking, I suggest that you watch your company.  We’re not sure but we believe he’s connected to some very suspicious people involved heavily in the illicit drug trade. You seem to be a professional woman about your business.  This is simply a warning to you.  Watch your company.  If you’re not involved, there’s no need to get you pulled into something that could have a lasting negative effect on you. Has he mentioned anything you, you...”

*****

The news Sadie had just been given blew her mind.  Moe? Moe Garrett?  This is unbelievable.  Involved in the drug trade?  He’d certainly given no signs, no hints.  Actually, Sadie would’ve never imagined it in a million years.

Sadie visualized Moe in her mind.  And unlike the effects that news of FBI investigations normally had on people, Sadie grew more infatuated with Moe as a result.
Moe, a big time drug dealer,
she thought.

“…recently broken my leg… the Ravens let me go… but I had… plenty of money…”

She allowed her mind to ponder the possibilities.

“Ok, this can be related to an equity stock.  A blue chip equity stock.  It’s a safe investment.  It’s secure.  I gets lots of capital backing it.  And over time, it’s expected to grow into a beautiful behemoth of a monster.  And the return on such an investment is your ability to benefit from growing with the particular company.  And this is what I’m preparing for you.  You’re what I want and need.  Forget this escorting stuff.  Allow me to take you away from such a life, escorting men around for a living.  You and I could grow together.  And in time, we will really be something Sadie.  You could become a permanent escort.  I’d give you a handsome monthly allowance.  You’d have access to all of my toys, the boats, cars, jet skis.  All of that stuff.  We could ride the wave of companionship like a booming bull market. I want you be my permanent escort Sadie.  On paper, you can be my maid, personal trainer, personal assistant, secretary.  You name it.  I want you alone Sadie.  It’s began to sicken me, the thought of you entertaining someone else,” Gabriel said, a bit of spittle flying into Sadie’s face.

Gabriel was at least 60 with a rugged, weathered face.  His hair had gone from gray to white.

Sadie eyed him with an expression reserved for comedians.  “I love my job Gabriel.  I’m a people person.  And let’s look at it like this…Whenever you’re with me, when we’re together, you do have me all to yourself.  And I really adore your company,” she said, a brilliant smile spreading her face, while Moe Garrett occupied her mind.

*****

“Someone calm her down,” Sadie said, sitting in her office with Sandie, Sheryl, Lacy, and Reena.  We’ve got someone searching for Madelyn now.  I’m sure she’s fine. It’s only been a couple of days.”

Sadie hoped her words were true.  She couldn’t stand to lose another escort.  Sheryl escorted Reena out of the office.  Sandie and Lacy remained inside.

“That guy Gabriel actually tried to get me to quit my job for him.  He said he’s started to get sick just thinking about me with other men.   He claimed he wants me all to himself.  Can you believe that?   His old ass,” Sadie said.

“I know you’re not talking about Gabriel Thomas,” Lacy said.

“Yes I am.  Why?”  Sadie asked, pushing some paperwork to the side.

“Because that old freak fucked Sheryl and Star their first week they worked for Nushu’s.  He tried to get Sheryl to quit,” Lacy said.

“Oh really,” Sadie replied.
Fuckin trick
, she thought to herself.
