Chapter 11

Ten Toes Down

January, 2014

“She’s dead. They found her dead, Sadie.  Oh my God.  She’s dead.  Somebody killed Lilian.  They killed her!” Gia screamed into the phone hysterically.

“Hold on.  Calm down.  Where are you?”  Sadie responded.

“…They stabbed her.  They stabbed her and killed her.”

Sandie strolled into Sadie’s office wearing a woman’s business suit by Chanel with Gucci heels.  She babbled away on her phone until noticing the expression on Sadie’s face.  A haunted expression, reserved for those who’d witnessed a horrendous crime against humanity.

“What’s wrong?”  Sandie asked, disconnecting her call.

Sadie pulled herself together, ignoring the ominous tremor running up and down her spine.  She opened and closed both hands and made eye contact with Sandie.

“Gia just called.  Lilian was found dead in Clay Terrace.  She’d been stabbed to death,” Sadie said.

“What!”  Sandie almost yelled.  “Are you serious?”

“Let’s go,” Sadie said, flying out of her office.

Sandie followed suit.  Sadie hopped into her ruby red 2012 XKR Jaguar Coupe and put the 510 horses beneath its hood to work.  She and Sandie headed to the morgue to meet Gia.

“She’d been fuckin with this nigga around there.  And I kept tellin her he wasn’t worth shit.  This dirty ass nigga.  But she kept fuckin with him.  She was fallin in love or some shit.  And I thought it would pass.  But it didn’t.  Then she started acting strange and takin E pills and smoking K-2 and crazy shit.  That’s why she kept asking for time off.  And she got killed around there.  Some of them jealous bitches,” Gia sobbed.

Sadie sat there, listening solemnly.  She inhaled deeply on her cigarette.  Painful memories of her mother’s death stormed through her mind.  The beating.  Her being slapped across the floor.  How incredibly large the man appeared to be to the six year old Sadie.

“Smack-Smack-Smack.”

“…They’re all tricks…”

Sadie was furious that Lilian had been murdered.  She was deeply saddened.  It was as if she’d lost one of her flock.

“Gia, why didn’t I know any of this?  Why didn’t ANYONE make me aware of this?” Sadie asked, glaring at Gia.

“I told her not to tell you.  I didn’t want you to fire Lilly,” Madelyn blurted.

Sadie’s chest heaved.  Her eyes were pearls of ice.  She took a few deep breaths and forced herself to relax.

“I’ve been very open with all of you from the beginning.  What I condone here is NOT legal.  The risks we all take on a daily basis can quickly become life threatening.  We have to protect each other.  BUT NOT FROM EACH OTHER.  No matter what the outcome, let me know what’s going on.  I’ll do all I can for you.  I’m here for you.  I’m in this with you,” Sadie said.

Gia began to cry again.  Madelyn wrapped her arms around her.

“I’m sorry,” Madelyn said.

One thing Sadie had learned was that Lilian’s death hadn’t occurred while she was on a scheduled date set up by Nu Shu’s.  And if there were any reliefs in this picture, that was one of them.

Sadie stepped into the Olive Garden and was directed to her reserved table.  She took a seat, stunning in nothing but Jimmy Choo with accessories by Robert Cavalli, and waited for her $5,000 date.

He seemed to appear out of nowhere.  Shocked, Sadie held her composure as she stared at the familiar face of Mr. Lyle Bernstein.

“Allison Houston, I presume?” Mr. Berstein said, towering over her.

“Lyle,” she responded, extending her hand.

Lyle kissed Sadie’s hand and took a seat.  He leaned back into his chair and eyed Sadie with an expression only his passionate face was capable of making.  He said nothing for quite some time. Sadie also held her tongue, waiting.

“Why, Allison?  Why?” he asked, startling her.

There was no simple answer for such a question.  Her lower lip began to quiver.  Her entire face started to twitch.  Her eyes turned to pools of clear liquid.  And as if she’d been stabbed in the heart, the tears burst forth.

“I’m so sorry Lyle.  I’m so sor… ...ry,” she wailed, bringing the large napkin to her face while tears streamed.

Several people glanced in her direction.  Lyle, caught off guard by this reaction, didn’t seem to know what to do.  He turned his head to the left, then to the right; his expression now turning helpless.

“Please don’t hate me, Lyle.  I’m so sorry.  I’m so sorry,” she sobbed, afraid to look up just yet to see if this charade was working.

Lyle ran over to her chair and began consoling her.  The two of them conversed for quite some time until she’d convinced him that she was a dope fiend.  He reluctantly accepted her explanation and the fact that she was now in debt over $400,000.

“That’s why I work for this escort service.  These clothes, this jewelry, none of this shit is mine.  I’m a junky Lyle.  And I can’t stop.  I don’t know how to stop.  I almost work for free.  I wish I could make it up to you.”

Surely a drug addict, a heroin addict at that, couldn’t be held responsible for her actions
, Sadie thought with an inner smirk.

“Anything I can do to help Allison.  God, you’re beautiful,” Lyle said, touching her face.

“They call em snuff and DR, short for date rape.  Not exactly the most glamorous movies you wanna see, but you don’t have to watch em.  It’s uh, live, ya know.  Live rape and kill shit.  But enough about that part.  These babies easily sell in the triple digit thousands in months. Think about it.  These babies go for $200 a shot. Off-load em at $100 a shot and 1,000 gets you $100,000 easy.  It’s like sellin caskets.  It ain’t like you’re killin the people you’re sellin em to or the people in em.  Don’t even look at the movies.  But, I’m tellin you, this shit is hotter than a deep fryer at Denny’s.

And hey, I ain’t the kina guy who would try to sell anything to anybody.  But you’re official out here.  I know that.  You get caught with just ONE of these babies and you’re dead.  Life in prison.

But on a positive note, if you push 100,000 of these movies at half price, which is quick and easy to do, you’ll be sittin on $10 million.  And if you push 100,000 of em at full price, you’ll be sittin on $20 million.  The most disgusting shit sells the best.  Whatta you say?  You got to pay to play baby,” the Cricket said.  “Give it some thought and talk to me.  I’ll even throw in some existing clientele.”

Sadie’s greedy mind was racing.

“I’m interested,” Sadie said.

“You know you’re risking your LIFE?” Cricket asked.

“No risk, no reward,” she responded without so much as batting a lash.

Chapter 12

Touching

February    2014

“… ‘And I told her to smile a little bit more often.  She really had a beautiful smile, but she always kept this stone, I’m-so-mean, look on her face.  It was almost scary.  “Booooooooo.’  She might have well said it.  ‘I’m going to eat you.’

“Do you know she got upset because I asked her to smile more.  She demoted me.  And she started looking at me even meaner,” Maurice “Moe” Garrett said, with lots of facial action and hand gestures.

Sadie slapped the table softly, laughing at “Moe’s” antics. “You are so silly,” she said, beaming.  “She sounds like she was a miserable person.”

“I LOVE to see people happy and smiling.  I mentioned these beautiful little kids for a few months.  And I’d brought them with me to work.  My coworkers loved them.  Everybody was smiling and cuddling these kids and my supervisor, with her ‘I-want-to-eat-you-and-the-kids’ face, went crazy.

“Before she fired me…”

“She fired you?” Sadie asked, shocked.

“Yes.  She was a terrible somebody.  I also think she was a little jealous because she knew I’d recently broken my leg, and that’s why the Ravens let me go, but I had what she considered ‘plenty of money’.  She just hated me,” Moe said, with a bright, even-toothed smile.  “She knew I didn’t need the job.”

Sadie shook her head, staring at Moe.  He stood 6'2" tall.  He still maintained the athletic build of a professional ball player.  He was well groomed and neat at all times.  Sadie had dated him on numerous occasions since their original date as early as April 2013.  And he’d NEVER once attempted to have sex with her.  He’d also become one of her regulars.

“I don’t wish to cut an evening short Moe, but I’m so tired.  Could we get a suite and relax?  Please,” she said, placing her hand on top of his.

Moe glanced around the restaurant with the gleeful eyes of a kid on a field trip.  His hand had flinched upon Sadie’s touch.  He broke into a wide grin, stretching his goatee.

“Uh, sure.  Sure we can.”

“I don’t bite, Moe,” she said, batting her lashes.
But I do want to eat you
, she thought devilishly.

“You know, you’ve got this Elizabeth Taylor/Pam Grier thing going on,” he said, moving his body like a ghost for emphasis.  “Were you ever a model or an actress?”

Sadie grabbed his hand after he’d written the check and began leading him away from the table. “No, I haven’t.  But thanks for the compliment.  I don’t think I’m attractive enough or talented enough for either job.”

“I disagree.  You’ve got most of those starving little women beat, hands down.  Why are they so skinny and bony?” he asked, heading out of the restaurant.

Sadie sat on the sofa, her heels removed from her feet, her upper body pressed beneath Moe’s arm while watching ‘The Romantics’.

“I’m not sure you’re aware of who or what you really are, Sadie,” he said in a soft tone.  “You’re intelligent, independent, in a world used to being run by men, and you’re beautiful.”

Sadie pressed herself further into him. “What do you mean, ‘I don’t know who I real am?’” she asked, furious that he hadn’t attempted to make a move on her yet, in months.

“I mean, outside of all the pre-thought-out movements or comments,  outside the brand name clothing, the stereotypes and stuff.  Have you ever thought of throwing all that stuff on the floor, letting your hair down?!  Forgetting what people have to say about your actions or opinions.  Forgetting the makeup and material things.  Just throwing all that on the floor and really being you?  That’s what I mean,” he said, rubbing her shoulder.  “I bet THAT ‘you’ makes the ‘you’ I’m used to seeing look like a two on the scale of 1-10.”

Sadie moved away from him, giving him an indignant look. “Are you saying I’m a-”

“Get up Sadie.  Stand up and jump up and down on the sofa.”

“N… no,” she said.

Moe took off his shoes and began jumping up and down on the sofa with a bright smile quickly becoming cheerful laughter.

“Why can’t you be you, Sadie?  What are you afraid of?  Your hair might get messed up?  You might not look perfect?  Someone might see you?  Throw all that stuff on the floor Sadie.  Enjoy being you.  Let go of that stuff that makes you afraid to let your hair down and have fun.  I played a game for a living and I made millions.  I’m single because I refuse to play games when it comes to my life. Come on Sadie.  No one’s watching.  Jump up and down on the sofa with me,” he said, smiling, extending his hand.

Sadie had absolutely no idea what had come over her.  But she found herself jumping up and down on the sofa with this very strange yet attractive, charming gentleman… and laughing, enjoying herself in a way she was not accustomed to.

“I hate the bitch.  If I divorce her, she’ll take me to the fuckin cleaners, Sadie.  I have no idea what happened to her over the years.  I fuckin gave her everything.  Everything you could imagine,” Wilber strong said, veins protruding from the side of his head.

He shot up out of his seat, ignoring the band playing on the Spirit of Washington, a party boat that cruised up and down the Potomac River.  He’d acquired the entire shebang for this evening with Sadie.  The fact that it was normally reserved for kids’ proms meant nothing.

“She’s driving me insane Sadie.  And you sit here and listen to me on a regular basis.  You appear to understand, but you never say anything.  I mean, what the fuck should I do?  I haven’t fucked her in so long, I can’t even fit my dick in her.  She just exists to torment me,”  he rambled on.

Sadie lit a Virginia Slim and gazed out at the sparkling water.  Wilber was paid.  And he had no problem forking over as much as it took to keep Sadie satisfied.  He was also strapped like her good buddy ‘Totem Pole’ Black at her production company, which was an added plus.  However, his topics of conversation sucked.

“But, at least you listen to me.  That old hag just ignores me and spends my fuckin money,” he said, sitting back down.

You can always make me the beneficiary to all your money and then jump in the river
, Sadie thought.

“What are you smiling about?” Wilber asked, shooting back out of his chair.

“You look like you need some sexual healing, Honey,” she said, boldly grabbing his crotch while glancing to both sides quickly.

“You might be right,” he said, her paranoia becoming contagious.

Wilber began to appraise Sadie with his eyes like a gourmet meal, literally licking his lips. Sadie, knowing what such an acknowledgment meant in terms of funds and pleasure, grew moist.

“Take me somewhere and fuck me good Daddy,” she purred.  “Forget about your wife for a moment.  You’re with Sadie now.”
