HOSPITAL
HARMONY

When I opened my eyes, I could feel the wide catheter cord digging inside of the small peehole in my pussy. I told them it hurt earlier, but no one bothered to listen. Now they were going to have to take it out, or else I was going to rip it out myself.

The hospital room was deathly silent until I yelled, “NURSE!!!!! NURSE!!!!!”
I waited for her to come into the room. To hear the sounds of her hospital shoes screeching across my doorway. I hoped the white nurse would come. Her name was Elizabeth and she always told me things would be okay, and I believed her. She’d check my issue, give me medication for my pain and stay with me until I drifted off to sleep.
If it was the black nurse, name Shonda, she would come in talking on the phone, only to tell me that I looked fine, without even checking my problem. Behind my back and to the other nurses she would say I complained too much. I heard her say that a lot of times in the hallway when she thought I was sleep. I hated that black bitch the most.
“NURSE! NURSE!” I screamed again.
Nothing.
Nobody.
All of a sudden the room felt colder. Did they forget I needed help? After what Mad put me through I thought I was going crazy. I hated to be alone. And it seemed like I had cords hooked up to every damn part of my body although the catheter hurt the worse. It had been hours since someone told me what was going on with me. Was I gonna live or die? If I was going to die, the least they could do was bring me some vodka and let me fuck the orderly who secretly comes into my room, lifts up my gown and plays with my pussy late at night. At first I pretended to be sleep, but sometimes he did it so good, I would moan and move my hips until I came all over his fingers. Now he’d come in the moment his shift started, sometimes earlier, and wake me up. I’d open my eyes and he’d finger fuck me until I begged him to stop. Kali use to do that to me. Finger fuck me when he thought I was sleep. I loved it then and I loved it now.
“NURSE!!! NURSE!!!”
Where are they? I need a drink. Bad. I want out of here! I’d been feening for alcohol ever since that daughter of mine took me against my will and tortured me. Hateful bitch. She gonna pay seriously for what she did to me.
“Ms. Phillips, I see you’re up,” detective Bernard Tassel, said entering my room.
FUCK! I didn’t feel like dealing with this cop. He’d been bothering me from the moment they rolled my ass through the door.
“I’m sleep.” Under the covers, I held on to the catheter preparing to pull it out.
“If you were sleep you wouldn’t be talking right now, would you?”
Bastard!
“We have some more questions for you.”
Detective Bernard Tassel stunk badly. He wore too much Old Spice. I remember the smell because Ramsey loved it when we were together. It stunk then and it stinks now. I’d rather smell fifty sacks of detached balls than that cologne.
“I told you I don’t wanna talk.”
“And I said I have questions.”
I turned away and with the hand that wasn’t about to pull on the catheter cord, reached from under the covers and turned the TV on using the remote connected to my bed. “I don’t have any more answers for you. I told you that already.”
“And we understand that,” he walked up next to my bed and turned the TV off, “but we need to be sure. There has to be something you remember.”
I moved a little and the stab wounds throughout my body stung because of my recent stitches. And my hairline fractured leg, in a walking cast, felt weak. Then I remembered the pain pump they gave me so I tapped it a few times. Hopefully it will help ease the uncomfortable feeling of this catheter also.
“I wish you leave me the fuck alone.” I tapped the button again.
“Easy up on that pump,” he smiled. “I don’t want you to pass out before we get some answers.” He sat down in a chair next to my bed. “They have me on this case and I must tell you, I have a 90 percent close case ratio. Which means I always get my man, or woman.”
“Congratulations.” I said rolling my eyes.
“Ms. Phillips…”
“Detective, please,” I said interrupting him. Then I pushed the covers off of my body. Exposing myself I opened my legs and pulled the cord out. Urine splashed on his face and dampened my bed.
“WHAT THE FUCK?!!!!!!” He yelled removing a napkin from his pocket to wipe piss off of his face.
“Maybe you should leave.” I told him trying to hide my laughter. Then I yelled. “NURSE!!!!”
He walked up to my bed and I thought he was about to hit me. I squinted preparing for the blow. Then he pushed the button on the remote that looked like a little lady. I heard it beep.
“That’s how you get the nurse into your room.”
“Well…thank you.”
He threw the piss soaked napkin in the trash and said, “Thank me by helping me solve your case. What do you remember?”
Wanting him to leave I decided to tell my version again. “The night everything happened, I was in my room, preparing for bed. I had just made dinner for my daughters when all of a sudden, I was hit in the face with a closed fist. When I came to, I was here.”
“So you don’t remember how you got the wounds on your body, or who gave them to you? Your daughters don’t remember either? Maybe I can talk to them.”
“I can’t remember nothing and they don’t either.” I looked at the door for the nurse. Where the fuck was she? “I don’t understand why you don’t believe me. I’m the victim.”
“Ms. Phillips, we know you’re the victim. But you do realize that over time, memories can be recalled. And when those memories come up, it’s my job to bring them out of you.” He paused. “I don’t want what happened to you, to happen to anyone else.”
“Like I said, I don’t remember shit.”
He sighed. “Oh well, I’ve done all I can for now. You have my number.”
When he finally left the nurse came in. I didn’t recognize her. She wasn’t mean or nice, just somewhere in between. “Why did you take the catheter out?” She asked.
“It hurt.”
“You should’ve asked for help. We could have moved it a little.”
“I don’t want it back in.”
“It has to go back in, mam. If it doesn’t go back inside you’ll get an infection and you’ll have to stay longer.”
I let the bitch put it back and finally met with the doctor. He gave me my status, told me I was doing better and to try to get some sleep. The catheter wasn’t as uncomfortable because I think the medicine was taking hold of me. I was feeling high and relaxed.
The moment I closed my eyes, someone I hadn’t seen in weeks walked into my doorway. At first I couldn’t tell how bad I looked, until I saw the expression on her face. I figured she’d love to see me like this, after everything I supposedly put her through.
I couldn’t get over how much she looked like me when I was younger. She took my face and was probably out there trying to take my life. Where did she get fly clothes from? Somebody was taking care of her like Jace once took care of me. She had my eyes and the body I had when I was her age. She looked so much like me it was crazy. But it wasn’t me, because I was in the bed, cut up not knowing if I was going to live or die.
“Mama, can I, can I come in?” Jayden asked. I nodded and she walked in slowly.
“I been here everyday. Did they tell you?”
“No.”
“I spoke to some nurse name Shonda.”
I shook my head. “Nobody told me nothing.”
“Mama,” she paused looking me over, “what happened to you?”
Silence.
“Too much.”
“Mama, did…did…Madjesty do this to you?”
I stared at her like she was the dumb bitch that she was. Why the fuck would she ask me something she already knew the answer to? This is why I always said when I was younger, before I even had any kids that I didn’t want to deal with girls. This bitch was as stupid a bitch as they came.
“What do you think, Jayden?”
“Oh, my God!” She started trembling. “Why would she do this to you?” She started pacing the room and tears fell out of her eyes by the pounds. “I…I can’t believe she did this!”
“Jayden, calm down.”
“Why?!!! Why would she do something so mean? I asked her! I asked her over and over again did she do anything to you and she told me no!”
“Jayden,” I said softly. “I didn’t say she did this.” I was trying to diffuse the situation because I had plans for Mad I didn’t want her ruining. She couldn’t handle the truth and I needed things to remain calm for my plans to work. “Relax, baby. Please.”
She seemed confused but she stopped walking. “But…I came over the house to ask about you and Mad said you weren’t there.” She seemed calmer. “And then I saw your mail and your welfare check wasn’t picked up. So none of it made sense.”
“Jayden…she didn’t know. It wasn’t Madjesty. I mean…Mad.”
“Mad?” She paused. “You sure Madjesty didn’t do this? She kept making me call her that also recently.”
“I’m sure.”
“But when I talked to a nurse downstairs, she said you were in the house. Mad stayed in that house. So how didn’t she know you were there?”
“You got my check?” I asked ignoring her question.
“It’s in your room at the house, ma.”
I was about to go off if these bitches fucked with my check but luckily she put it up for me. “Jayden, your sister didn’t do this to me. She was so busy with her friends in the house that she didn’t know what was happening
“But it seems strange that she didn’t…”
“Jayden, it’s true. She didn’t do this.”
She seemed relieved and I could see her exhaling. She walked closer to the bed and said, “Well who found you?”
“Katherine Sheers, the caseworker from the department of Child Services.” I paused. “Remember…you met her when you came back home that day. With Trip’s son?”
“Oh. Yeah.” She paused. “You mean Shaggy. But ma, how come they don’t like you? Trip…Shaggy’s mom?”
“Don’t care and not interested.” I lied. “But I hear you girls haven’t been going to school and Katherine wanted to check on you. When she came in the house, she said the door was cracked open. I heard her walking inside and I gathered enough strength to call for help. Had it not been for that woman I probably wouldn’t be here.” Then I looked at her. “Why haven’t you been going to school, Jayden? If ya’ll don’t go to school it could mess up my check because they’ll take you away from me.”
“All you care about is a check?” She frowned.
“You know that’s not true. Well, at least you should know.”
“I missed a few days, ma. It wasn’t a lot though.”
See this is why I use to smack this bitch upside the head all the time. Her not going to school caused problems for me. “You gotta go to school, Jayden. And you have to move back home.”
“No!”
“Jayden, you have to move back home.” I was firm. “You’re not going to be by yourself when you move back, Madjesty will be there.”
“But why I gotta come back? I got my own place. I can pay you more.”
“Because this caseworker will find you and put you in a foster home. Do you want that?”
“No!”
“Well that’s what will happen. She told me herself.” I paused. “Now I’ll give you a few weeks to get your things together, but every night you have to sleep at Concord. I can’t have this woman coming back to my house and getting into our business. Okay?”
“Okay.” She paused, “And mama I’m sorry, about everything. Had I known you were hurt I would’ve been there for you.”
Now here is the part of the plan I was going to find hard to fake. I had to convince this bitch that I gave a fuck. That I still didn’t hate her as much as I did the day she was born.
“Jayden, all of this is my fault. When I almost died, in that house, all I could do was think about my kids. I wasn’t a good mother and I know it now. So if anybody should be sorry it’s me.” She gave me a strange look. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, you just remind me of the day I came to the house and met the social worker.” She said in a low voice. “The day Shaggy brought me over.”
I frowned a little. “So you’re saying I’m faking it?”
“No…No!” She shook her head. “I’m not saying that at all. I really just want to make sure you’re okay and that you mean everything you say.” Then she looked at me as if she didn’t see me before. “Are you in a lot of pain?”
“No. Not a lot.”
“Mama, I know, I mean I know we haven’t been on the best of terms in our relationship.” She paused. “I was kind of angry with you for what you did to me and Mad.”
“Jayden, please…”
“No listen, mama, I was mad at you for that. But I talked to daddy, and he cleared some things up for me. I never really knew how hard of a life you had growing up. And he helped me understand that.”
“Daddy?” I repeated.
She smiled. “Yeah, we are getting to know each other now.”
“Jayden, you can’t tell him about how I treated you when you were a kid.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re starting all over. Me and you.” I gripped her hand. “And he might tell Katherine Sheers.”
“But if something ever happened, and they took me away, instead of going to a foster home, couldn’t I live with him?”
“No…he’s a drug dealer, Jayden.” I said sternly. “And I know you know that.” I paused. “Don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“She’d never allow you to stay with a person like that.” I touched her long hair and wanted to cut it off. “Listen, what happened back in Texas is the past. We need to leave well enough alone if we’re going to have a future.”
“Ok. I…I understand.”
“I know this is a lot, but believe me when I say it’s for your own good.” I paused. “Now does he know I’m here?”
Just when I asked that Jace walked through the hospital door. It looked like not a year had passed since I last saw him. His tall body hung in the doorway and his beautiful eyes widened with pity when he saw my face. I must really look bad. He ran his hand threw his soft curly hair, which was cropped real low, and then he rested his hands into his True Religion jean pockets. Even though I could tell he was at a loss for words he looked so fucking sexy and all I could think about was the days he use to hold me and love me. After quickly looking him over, my stare settled on his eyes again. This time he looked a little angry.
“How are you, Harmony?” He said in the doorway. “Long time no see.”
“I’ve been better, Jace.”
He smirked. “So have I.” he looked at me seriously. “Consider yourself lucky though.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because when you have the privilege of breathing, after everything you’ve been through, you should never take for granted that you’re still alive.”
I smiled lightly. I knew where he was coming from immediately. “I don’t take anything for granted, Jace. And I’m a changed woman these days and not the same person I use to be years ago. I’m not even the same person I use to be a few days ago.”
“That’s good for you. Although sometimes you have to answer for your past.”
“And so do you. Besides, how’s Kali? I heard a lot has been going on lately. I thought he was your friend?”
He frowned and I saw his jaw jump. He balled his fists up but looked at Jayden.
I could tell Jayden was feeling slightly uncomfortable and so was I. She cleared her throat and said, “Mama, do you need anything?”
