One Year Later

“How did a year pass us by so quickly?”

“Because we’re so happy. Time flies when people are happy.” She looked over at me with a smile as we walked the familiar path next to the lake that held so many memories for us.

Chloe stopped when we got to the middle of the bridge, and I looked at the love lock that was secured to the railing.

“Can you believe it’s been here for fourteen years?” I held the lock and flipped it over to see the inscription I’d had etched on the back:

Jax & Clo

June 2003

Unbreakable Friendship & Love.

Promise to Marry in 2014.

“I know. You were right, Jax.” She met my gaze and a smile appeared on her pink lips.

“I know I’m usually right,” I teased, “But what am I am right about this time?”

“When you got this love lock as a present to me for our high school graduation, you said that there was this belief that if two people lock a love lock against the railing of a bridge and then throw away the keys, it’s supposed to symbolize unbreakable love.” She grinned. “I think we’ve proved that belief right. We’ve gone through so many obstacles since we’d put this lock here, but despite everything, our love remained strong and unbreakable.”

My chest filled with happiness as I took in her words. “I love you, Mrs. Pierce,” I said as I lowered my mouth and kissed her.

“I love you, too, Mr. Pierce.”

Then I remembered something. “So what is this anniversary gift that you’re so confident will be better than the one I got you?” I flashed her a doubtful smirk.

She grinned in silence like she was amused by the secret she was keeping. “Ye of little faith.” She made a tsk tsk sound with her tongue. “Mr. Pierce, you should know by now that your wife is always right.”

I chuckled and pulled her into my embrace again as I let the word, “wife” linger in my thoughts. I could never grow tired of hearing her tell me she was mine. As I inhaled her intoxicating scent, I whispered, “Mrs. Pierce, you should know by now that your husband is very stubborn to admit things even when he knows his wife is right.”

She giggled and rolled her eyes.

“So where’s my anniversary gift,” I playfully demanded.

“It’s this,” she said with a knowing smile as she handed me a small, heavy box.”

I looked at her. “I’m pretty sure my gift to you will be better—it’s certainly bigger.”

She laughed. “Bigger doesn’t mean better.”

“You’ve never had any complaints,” I teased.

She hit me across my chest, and I pretended to wince in pain.

“Now open the box and you’ll find out that my gift is better.”

“Fine.” I opened the box as she watched me with amusement.

When I saw what was inside, I looked up at Chloe in surprise. “It can’t be,” I exclaimed. If this was what I thought it was, then she was right, this anniversary gift was better than mine—much better.

“Take it out,” she urged. “Let’s put it against the railing and throw away the keys. I want to make sure this will be an unbreakable love.”

I was filled with so much emotion, I couldn’t speak. I reached for the love lock from the box. We both secured it together against the railing. As soon as we threw the keys into the lake, I grabbed her into my arms.

“Clo, I never thought I could be any happier than the day you married me, but today, you proved me wrong. You’ve made me the happiest man on earth for a second time.”

As we walked back home to share the news with Aunt Betty and Uncle Tom, a new shiny love lock was now next to the one that we’d placed there fourteen years ago. On the back of this new love lock was the inscription:

Jax, Clo & Baby

July 2017

Unbreakable Love & Family

Expected Arrival in February 2018

About T
he Author

Jessica Wood writes new adult contemporary romance.

While she has lived in countless cities throughout the U.S., her heart belongs to San Francisco. To her, there’s something seductively romantic about the Golden Gate Bridge, the steep rolling hills of the city streets, the cable cars, and the Victorian-style architecture.

Jessica loves a strong, masculine man with a witty personality. While she is headstrong and stubbornly independent, she can’t resist a man who takes control of the relationship, both outside and inside of the bedroom.

She loves to travel internationally, and tries to plan a yearly trip abroad. She also loves to cook and bake, and—to the benefit of her friends—she loves to share. She also enjoys ceramics and being creative with her hands. She has a weakness for good (maybe bad) TV shows; she’s up-to-date on over 25 current shows, and no, that wasn’t a joke.

And it goes without saying, she loves books—they’re like old and dear friends who have always been there to make her laugh and make her cry.

The one thing she wished she had more of is time.
