“I want to talk to you,” he said.

The sound of his voice sent a lance of desire straight through her spine.
Shit
. Why the hell did he always have this effect on her? It wasn’t enough that he humiliated her. Now, he was back as if nothing ever happened. “I don’t have time.”

“Please. Five minutes. That’s all want, and if you’re not convinced about what I say, you can walk away.”

She narrowed her eyes. Stacy didn’t want to talk to him because if she did so, he would spin his lies. She’d heard enough already. “I don’t even have five seconds for someone like you. Now, if you will excuse me, I have something to do and someplace else I need to be. Don’t come back, Marco.”

“Wait. Please.”

“No, not ever.” She gave him a cold smile. With an effort, she managed to keep her face expressionless. “As you can see, I have a date. I’ve already moved on. I think you should, too.” Although it made her happy to see the blood drain out of his face, Stacy didn’t stick around to find out if he was really as affected by her words as he seemed. Turning on her heels, she walked to her friends and stuck her hand in the crook of Joe’s arm. “Shall we?”

Although he looked a bit taken aback by her bright smile, Joe nodded. “Sure.”

Jane glanced at Marco, and perhaps she understood the situation, but she didn’t say a word. Instead, she prattled on about other matters. “So have we decided what we’re going to watch?”

“There is a new Tom Cruise movie out,” said Mark.

Jane wrinkled her nose. “Action?”

Stacy was too worked up to pay attention. How dare he show up at her office as if nothing had happened between them? Hadn’t she made herself clear that she didn’t want to see him again? Why couldn’t he just admit that he was wrong, that he was an asshole, and they could both put the past behind them? No. He had to try to talk to her and convince her that he was duty bound to break up with her. She wouldn’t ever believe that crap.

“What about you, Stacy? Do you have preferences?” said Joe.

“No, whatever you decide is fine.” She really wasn’t in the mood or the right frame of mind to watch a movie. It would be better if she canceled the date and went home. However, she was afraid that Marco might follow her there, and she didn’t want to upset Jane. She was, at the moment, the only loyal ally she had in her corner, and Stacy didn’t want to push her away.

“Tom Cruise it is then,” said Mark.

“I’m not particularly fond of action, but he sure is cute so I’ll just eat the popcorn and glance at him adoringly,” said Jane.

“You should look at me adoringly,” said Mark, as he put an arm around her shoulder.

“That I do can anytime I want, darling.”

Stacy couldn’t pay attention to their banter as they all marched along. The mall wasn’t too far away from the office. Soon Joe and Mark were in the line to get the tickets while Stacy stood with Jane a little far behind. “Who the hell was that guy?” hissed Jane.

“Marco.”

“Perfect timing that guy has. What did he want?”

“I don’t know. I didn’t give him the chance to tell me. Probably he wanted to spin more lies. I don’t know why he is bothering. I don’t really care either way why he did what he did. All I want is to move on.”

“And Joe will help you do that too.”

Stacy didn’t think Joe held a chance. The guy seemed nice, but she was in a different zone right now. It wasn’t possible for her to feel anything for any man. Too bad for her because Joe seemed very nice. Still, she was afraid to take any more chances now. She didn’t have just one but two bad experiences, and she needed time to gather her energy.

When the movie finished, she would end this charade. And then it would be time to be alone again. That was the only way she would heal, and Stacy knew that well.

No more men—and that was a promise she wanted to keep for herself.
