Read Journey to the Highlands: Robbie and Caralyn (Clan Grant Series Book 4) Online
Authors: Keira Montclair
A few months later
Caralyn sat in a chair by the hearth in the great hall, warmed by the flames crackling in the midst of a cold winter. She caught her breath and held it. Could it be? She glanced around at all the activity going on in the room. Fortunately, she was alone by the hearth; she didn’t want anyone to see the expression on her face just yet. Robbie, Brodie, Tomas, and Alex sat at the table on the dais, laughing and arguing about some challenge in the lists. Maddie had taken Connor and Kyla up to bed, but Celestina was reading one of Maddie’s picture books to the other children.
How her life had improved since she met her husband. She and Robbie had married quickly so Brenna and Quade could attend the ceremony before they headed home. She hadn’t wanted anything fancy, just a simple ceremony, and it had been beautiful.
The day after their wedding, Alex had brought her into his solar along with Robbie, Brenna, Maddie, and Jennie. His idea had shocked Caralyn at the time—he wanted her to become the newest Grant healer. She could remember exactly how he put it: “Seems I better not ever be dependent on just one healer in the clan. Lassies have a tendency to disappear.” He gave Brenna a pointed look and she chuckled.
Brenna hugged her after she agreed, and said, “I have complete faith in you, Caralyn. You will be a wonderful healer. You and Jennie work well together.”
And she had not regretted her decision once. Since that day, she had delivered several bairns and learned how to stitch wounds, and better yet, how to relieve her tension by relaxing in her husband’s arms.
Robbie had taught her the true meaning of love and opened a whole new world to her. Their lovemaking was sweet at times and intense at others. She and her husband enjoyed their private room in the cottage, and she never felt a stroke of guilt for any of the new tricks he had taught her.
Sighing, she reflected on how wonderful her life was—every moment, every day. Only one thing was missing—a bairn of their own. She loved her daughters, but how she had dreamed of another, a bairn to share with her husband so they could delight in watching something their love had created bloom in front of their eyes.
Frightened that she would be unable to carry again because of her age, she’d even pretended to have her courses a couple of times, not ready to tell Robbie the truth. She’d been so scared she was wrong or something would happen to prevent the bairn from coming.
There it was again! Aye, she was sure now. The tiniest of flutterings spread inside her belly, much like the wings of a wee butterfly. A bairn. She and Robbie were going to have their own babe.
Tears flowed down her cheeks as she cradled her belly in her hands. She wanted to yell to her husband, but she was too choked up to speak. Her breath hitched twice before she was able to force another calming breath.
She watched her husband from afar, and all the other wonderful members of her family. They were going to have a wean together.
Robbie stood, staring at her. He headed her way, a puzzled look on his face. She wanted to tell him, she was finally
ready
to tell him, but she just couldn’t speak. If she did, she would blubber loud enough for Brenna and Quade to hear her all the way in Lothian.
“Sweeting?” He increased his pace. “Is something wrong? Why are you crying?”
She shook her head, then stared down at her belly as he knelt in front of her. Silence descended on the great hall as everyone turned to stare at her. She took his hand in hers and placed it over her belly, then nodded, cradling his face with her other hand.
Robbie quirked his brow. “A bairn? Is that what you’re trying to tell me?”
She nodded and let out a gush of a sob, wrapping her arms around his neck.
Robbie let out a whoop and picked her up, swinging her in a circle. He kissed her lips and whispered, “I love you, Caralyn Grant.”
Caralyn nodded and glanced over his shoulder as Maddie came down the stairs.
Alex, Brodie, and Loki all let out a Grant whoop, while the rest of the family charged over to wrap her in their embrace.
The girls were at their mother’s side in an instant. Ashlyn peered up at Caralyn and asked, “A bairn, Mama? Is it really true?”
Nodding, Caralyn patted her belly, not able to get the words out.
Gracie leaned in and kissed her belly. “Lu you, wee bairn.”
