“Sounds like they’re both bad news, but I’m guessing forgetting about them both isn’t an option.” Through raw, red eyes Angelica saw the hopeless pain from which her friend was suffering. Too much had happened for Ana to simply throw away the feelings she had, and it wasn’t easy to simply let go.

“I really want him to call and explain himself,” she said, so for the rest of the night they waited and watched her cell. All the while Angelica tried to offer as much sympathy as she could, but even when she tried to distract Ana, the heartbroken girl’s eyes always drifted back towards the cell phone.

She whined and moaned and cried for Glenn to call, but all through the night the phone remained silent. She looked up out the window at the full moon and her mind went back to the previous night and how Glenn had spoken almost poetically about the moon. He had seemed so romantic and perfect, yet now she was wondering how much of it had just been cheap lines designed to seduce her, and how much of the romantic atmosphere she had manufactured herself thanks to the wine and her own dizzying hopes.

But now that he wasn’t calling it had all seemed too good to be true, and she wondered what on Earth Glenn was thinking. He must have been with Colton still, running together, whatever that meant, but all she could think was that she was supposed to be in bed with Glenn and they were supposed to be happy.

This night was supposed to have been the start of a new chapter in her life, yet it felt like she was always taking one step forward and two steps back. She thought Glenn had proven himself but the only thing that weekend had proven is that she fell in love all too easily, and she promised herself that the next time she met a guy she liked she would take her time and be careful with her heart, because it could only take so much punishment before it became irreparable.

“I just hate that I misjudged him so badly,” she said as Angelica comforted her.

“It happens to the best of us I’m afraid, but we’ll be alright. At least we have each other,” she said, and Ana was pleased for that at least. The future was still bright but it was tinged with shadows, like a piece of paper burned at the edges. Newtown had suddenly lost a little bit of its appeal, and now she wasn’t sure how the immediate future would go.

Epilogue

Glenn had never called and for the days following that heartbreak Ana had been inconsolable. Angelica had tried her best but Ana had to sink to the lowest depths of anguish before she could rise again, and rise she did. She had a business to run and other responsibilities, and she was determined to not let one lover’s actions dictate the course of her life.

She set about determinedly to make progress, although her plan to leave Trinity Falls had been put on hold slightly since Angelica still had to stay with her parents for a while longer. This suited Ana for she wasn’t sure she wanted to be in that city full time as it would only remind her that Glenn and Colton were lurking about somewhere, plus she hated the idea that she would be weak and go and hammer on Glenn’s door.

But she had made some progress and rented out some office space from which she sold her outfits to customers. It helped her to escape and having a place for work made things run more smoothly, as she felt more professional than when she had been running her business from her apartment. She even had business cards printed and had made some good contacts with local distributors, and it filled her with pride.

It was also a personal triumph over Glenn because she had proven that she didn’t need his money to help her and that she could do it on her own. The daily commute to Newtown was arduous but the more time she spent in the city the more she was getting over her trysts with Glenn and Colton. She was spending most of her free time with Angelica and the two of them managed to distract each other from the woes in their lives.

Slowly but surely Ana was getting closer to the life she wanted to lead, and she was talking more with Angelica about moving. The wedding and everything regarding Colton and Glenn faded into the distance. The memories were tinged with sadness now, and she saw the experiences with them for what they were.

It had turned out that her Aunt had been right; the billionaires had evidently wanted something to amuse themselves with and it had turned out to be her. She knew that somewhere out there was the perfect guy for her, but this time she was going to wait for him to come to her.

One day she was at work and a few customers were milling about the store, rifling through the clothes and crafts she offered. She was keeping an eye on them and watching to see if any of them needed assistance. Then the door opened and she froze. It was him. How had he found her? Her throat ran dry and her lip started to tremble. He strode purposefully into the store, right up to her, and looked down with his piercing eyes.

“Get out,” she said, although her words faltered as they left her mouth.

He gripped her arm, and as she felt his touch the natural attraction between them bloomed once more, and she hated herself for feeling that, especially after everything he had put her through. A few of the customers turned to see what was going on, but they all melted away as Ana was drawn into him. She gulped as she looked into his eyes, and wished that he hadn’t shown up.

“I need to see you.
Now
,” Colton said, and something in his voice told him she’d better listen.
