Two nutrients that are particularly important for strengthening blood vessels are vitamin C and its mutual companion—bioflavanoids. Also known as vitamin P, bioflavanoids have the ability to regulate the permeability of blood capillaries. They stick to the collagen fibers in blood vessels, which restores the integrity of capillary walls.

Become aware of other nutrients that might help to improve circulation to the veins. In addition to the vitamin C with bioflavanoids, I always recommend to my patients vitamin E, which improves blood circulation and reduces pain and swelling, vitamin B complex, lecithin, and coenzyme Q10. A general antioxidant formula that contains beta-carotene, selenium, and zinc will also be beneficial.

EXTRA TIPS

To help ease varicose discomfort, a compress infused with horsechestnut herb can be placed over the affected areas. To prepare the compress, mix half a teaspoon of horsechestnut powder with two cups of water and use it to soak a sterile cotton washcloth.

Witch hazel herb is another remedy that can be applied to the skin; a natural astringent, it tightens tissues and reduces pain.

Treat yourself to a warm bath infused with essential oils. Try rosemary or frankincense in the mornings or lavender, chamomile, or rose at night.

Don’t stand or sit in the same position for long periods of time.

Don’t sit with your legs crossed.

Avoid baths that are too hot.

Try to maintain your ideal weight.

Engage in regular exercise such as walking, swimming, or cycling.

Massage the legs regularly on a daily basis.
