Ilga’s Socks

Nancy Bush

Common Latvian mythological symbols inspired this design.
Laima,
signified by the arrowlike pattern beneath the braided top edge, is one of three main Latvian deities and the controller of destiny.
Zalktis,
the grass snake represented in the curling border at the bottom of the color-work band, is a good omen, guarding everything good and valuable and acting as an intermediary between earth and sky.
Mara,
seen here in the design between Laima and Zalktis, is a helper of God and protector of women. The socks are named for Ilga Madre, a talented Latvian knitter.
