CHAPTER 1

“Young lady you will never be forgiven for this.”  Joshua chuckled.
“Mister MacGuire all you have to do is play the guitar.  You don’t even have to sing.  We are going to do all the actions and the chorus in the background.  Tracey’s Mom is going to do all the singing.”
“And I hope that baby doesn’t decide tonight is the night.”  Victoria grinned.
“Dad you look really good.”
“I should.  These are my jeans.”  Joshua grinned.
“Are you ready Mister MacGuire?”  David smiled and nodded.
“I am ready.”  He got up and joined the kids.  The stage went in to darkness and everyone listened to the Principal introducing the next class.

Helen stood dead still.  She grabbed her stomach.
“Nooooooo!”  They all looked at her.
“I can’t.  My waters broke!”  The teacher looked at her and there was suddenly a hive of activity as Helen rushed off.  The children stared at her with huge eyes.
“Go.  Just play.  Kids.  Tonight you sing!”  They all stared at her.  Nicola took off and sprinted right across the stage and flew down the stairs.  She ran to the family.
“Amanda you have to sing.  You have to sing!  Mrs. Jackson went in to labor!”  Amanda whispered.
“I can’t Nicola.”
“You have to!  Please Amanda!”  Nicola sprinted back up the stairs.  She joined her class.  David stared at everyone.

They started walking on to the stage and everyone started to clap.  Amanda looked at her mother.  Claire looked at her.  They both looked at the stage as David started to play his guitar.  Amanda whispered.
“I am not doing this.”
“You know the song?”
“I do.”  She got up and gracefully walked to the stage.  She walked up the stairs and took the microphone.  David stared at her.  She fiddled with the microphone and made a huge knot in the cable and slipped her hand through the knot.  She started to clap with the children.  David smiled and realized she knew what she was doing.  She needed her two hands to clap.  He whispered thinking no one could hear.
“Thank you.”  Amanda whispered as she took the microphone back in her hand.
“My pleasure.”  David grinned.  She smiled as she started to sing and walked over to David.  She pointed at David as she sang.

Desmond has a barrel in the market place”

She pointed to herself.
“Molly is the singer in a band”

David smiled and started singing with Amanda.

“Desmond says to Molly, Girl, I like your face
And Molly says this as she takes him by the hand
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on.
Desmond takes a trolley to the jeweler store
Buys a twenty carat golden ring (Golden ring)
Takes it back to Molly waiting at the door
And as he gives it to her she begins to sing (Sing)
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on.
In a couple of years they have built a home sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones (Ha ha ha ha ha)
Happy ever after in the market place
Desmond lets the children lend a hand
Molly stays at home and does her pretty face
And in the evening she still sings it with the band
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on.
In a couple of years they have built a home sweet home
With a couple of kids running in the yard
Of Desmond and Molly Jones (Ha ha ha ha ha)
Happy ever after in the market place
Molly lets the children lend a hand
Desmond stays at home and does his pretty face
And in the evening she's a singer with the band
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on
Obladi, oblada, life goes on, brah!
Lala how the life goes on.
And if you want some fun...take Obladiblada (Thank you)”

Everyone stood on their
feet and applauded.  Amanda bent forward and bowed.
“Nicola you are dead meat darling.”  Everyone roared with laughter.  David grinned as he heard the comment.  Amanda smiled as she straightened up.  She pointed towards David and the children.  They all cheered and clapped.  She smiled and walked over to David.  She started to clap.  He smiled and stood and took his bow.

Someone screamed.
“That’s Amanda Rose!  More!  We want more!”  Amanda roared with laughter and looked at Nicola.  She shrugged   She looked at the pianist and she nodded and smiled.  David nodded.
“Ladies and gents.  This is a tribute.  To the youngsters that have just performed the best performance ever.  The Beatles never sounded that good!  Now.  This is a little something by Sandie Shaw.  This will be a once off.  And then the Principal will be on this stage.  Because he already thinks I have stolen the show.”  Walter roared with laughter.  Walter ran on to the stage.
“Ladies and gents.  Put them together for Amanda Rose, David MacGuire, Mrs. Henderson and our seniors!”

Amanda smiled and bowed.  She walked over to David and gave him a few instructions.  He nodded and smiled.  The pianist smiled as she walked over.
“Just do your thing.  You know the tune.”  She chuckled and nodded.  She walked back to the children.
“Just make odd noises.  Boom boom.  And Nicola use that triangle thing.”  They grinned.
“Follow what I am doing and keep moving.  Right?”  They all grinned and nodded.

Amanda nodded and the music started.  She did the sound effects and then started to sing
‘A Puppet on a String’.  There was suddenly a little wild scramble behind the curtains.  Nicole stared as someone came out playing a drum.  One of the fathers followed with the trombone.

Amanda smiled as she s
tarted to sing.  David smiled as he stood up and played the guitar.  Amanda started to clap.  Everyone was on their feet.
“Ladies and gents.  Mrs. Henderson!”  Mrs. Henderson roared with laughter but carried on playing.
“Mister David MacGuire!”  David chuckled and smiled as he played.
“Our seniors ladies and gents!”  She pointed to them and waved.  They all came forward and smiled and took a bow.  She whispered.
“Who are the men?”
“Mister Chase and Donald Scott.”  Amanda smiled.
“Mister Chase and Donald Scott!”  They both smiled and carried on playing.  She carried on with the last verse.
“I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string
Like a puppet on a..... first verse folks!  Everybody!  Sing with us!”  David grinned as he carried on playing.  Every camera seemed to be flashed off as they sang.  Every person who had a cell phone was taking photographs or recording the impromptu show.  Everyone was on their feet.  There was dancing in the aisles and everyone joined in and sang and clapped.  Amanda started singing the song for the second time.

I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string
Love is just like a merry-go-round
With all the fun of the fair
One day I'm feeling down on the ground
Then I'm up in the air
Are you leading me on?
Tomorrow will you be gone?
I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string
I may win on the roundabout
Then I'll lose on the swings
In or out, there is never a doubt
Just who's pulling the strings
I'm all tied up with you
But where's it leading me to?
I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string
I wonder if one day that, you'll say that, you care
If you say you love me madly, I'll gladly, be there
Like a puppet on a string
Like a puppet on a..... string”

Walter grinned as he walked up the stairs to the stage.
It was so loud in the hall.
“Wow!  Wow!  Wow!”  He started to clap.
“Folks.  Let me tell you a little secret.  Miss Amanda was in this school.  She was here for her final year.  In my class!”  Amanda chuckled and nodded.  She looked at her watch.  She looked at Claire.  Claire nodded.  Amanda smiled.
“Thank you folks.”  She walked down the stairs and walked over to Claire.
“Love you Mom.”
“Love you sweetheart.  Thank you.”  She winked and slowly walked out.

Nicole walked over to Walter.
“She has a gig.”  Walter grinned.
“Our Amanda had to leave.  She has a gig.  Ladies and gents.”  He pointed.
“Amanda Rose!”  Amanda turned and waved.  She smiled as she walked out of the hall.

David watched as she walked.  She w
as so beautiful.  He was mesmerized by her looks.  Walter smiled.
“Gosh.  Folks.  The wind has been taken out of my sails.  I really don’t know what to say.  Wow!”  They all roared with laughter.
“Our seniors, folk.  Wow!”  They all roared with laughter.
“I can hear that song buzzing around in my head.  I feel like a puppet on a string!”  He chuckled.
“Folks.  Thank you for being here tonight.  It is my honor to stand here tonight.  What a show.  Wow!  Night everyone!”

David smiled as he took his cell phone which he had put on to record before he had sat down to play the guitar.  It was still runn
ing.  He smiled as he stopped recording.  He walked to the back and put his guitar in his case and walked back to the stage.  He could not stop smiling.  Mister Chase walked up to him and shook his hand.
“Hell!  Well done!  I feel.  I don’t know what I feel!”  David roared with laughter and nodded.
“I don’t know how we pulled that off but I kind of think we did.”  David grinned.
“That was out of this world.”
“Sure was.”  David chuckled and nodded.

Victoria walked through.
“Gosh Dad!”  He roared with laughter and hugged Victoria.
“Victoria that was amazing.  I am absolutely speechless.  Wow!”  She chuckled.
“You ready for home?”
“Yes Dad.”
“Is that her mother?”
“Nicola?”  He nodded.
“No.  That is her sister.”
“Wow!  Honestly.  My adrenalin levels have peaked.  Let’s go and get the folks.”

David walked across the stage with Nicola.
Mary and Tom hugged them both.
“I recorded the entire show!  Dad video recorded it on his phone.  Were you good or what?”  David chuckled.  He looked at Mrs. Henderson who still sat at the piano as if in a daze.  She looked over and chuckled.
“Well done Mister MacGuire!”  He roared with laughter.
“And you Mrs. Henderson!  You okay?”  She chuckled and got up.
“Floating!”  She smiled and shook her head.

David started walking out.  He stopped and gave the guitar case to Nicola.
“Give me just one minute.”  He walked over to Claire.
“Hi.  Mrs.”
“Rosendale.  This is my husband Don and I am Claire.”
“I don’t normally do this.  But is there any way I can get Amanda’s number.  To thank her for tonight.”  Tom nodded.
“Sure!”  He took out a business card and wrote Amanda’s number on the back.
“Is she playing tonight?”
“She sure is.  At the hotel.”  David smiled and nodded.
“Thank you.”  Claire and Tom smiled and nodded.  Nicola walked up and grinned.
“Hey Ma!  How cool was that!”
“Your sister is going to have your guts for her garters!”  Nicola roared with laughter.  David chuckled as he walked off.  He loved the way they spoke.  He could just imagine the banter that went on in their home.

He walked back to the family.  He put the business card in his back pocket.
“Mom.  Would you mind taking Victoria home with you? Victoria I need to do something very important sweetheart.”
“Sure Dad.”  Mary smiled and looked at David.
“I will see you a little later.  Don’t wait up for me.  I just.  I have to do this.”  He smiled as he walked off.
