“Where have you been all my life, Ben Kaiser?” she asked furiously, because for her anger was the emotion always closest to the surface.

He’d been having another life, Ben thought, but couldn’t say that to Regina. So instead he pressed down hard on her, appreciating the way she tilted and pushed her hips against his as she strained to take him even more deeply. Her struggles were so instinctive to mate herself to him they banished the caution Ben had used with every woman until her. He might hurt her, but the urge to make her his was too powerful to ignore, so he simply gave her all of himself.

“I’m here now,” Ben said at last, happily driving himself into her over and over. “And I am so damn glad to be in you.”

Then unwilling, but unable to fight the need any longer, Ben released himself inside her. “I’m sorry, honey. I knew I wasn’t going to last long enough.”

Regina stilled, kissing his neck, still moaning against the feel of him buried so deeply inside her there was no escaping his possession. She lowered her legs and brought both of them under his, in the process trapping his throbbing length deep inside her, holding him prisoner with her thighs.

“I look forward to next time,” Regina told him.

She crossed her ankles and squeezed her legs to hold his length in place against the perfect spot, thinking this was a special heaven with someone as endowed as Ben. Then she discovered her hips had a mind of their own as she clutched his hips tight and stroked herself against what was left of his impressive erection, which was more than some men ever had.

Ben felt tremors starting deep within Regina, so he rose a little and pressed down a few times more, sliding what was left of his hardness against her until she called his name in release.

“There’s my girl,” he whispered, satisfied more now because she was as well. As her tremors faded, Ben kissed Regina’s hair, the corner of her eyes, and licked away the tears of relief flowing freely down her face. Her passionate, full out response to everything continually thrilled him.

After Regina calmed, she swore softly in both embarrassment and pleasure. “Now I’m the one who’s sorry. I can’t believe I did that,” she told him.

She all but demanded an orgasm from him, and Ben had answered as best he could. Not that she had given him much choice.
Great first time etiquette
, she scolded herself. She was glad the mostly dark room hid her flaming cheeks.

Ben laughed against her hair. “Sorry you did what? Showed me how to give you what you wanted and needed. Don’t worry it, Regina. I ask for directions when I get lost, too.”

She snorted beneath him. “I warned you I wasn’t nice,” Regina said quietly against Ben’s throat, kissing his heartbeat there. “Just don’t pull away for a couple of minutes, okay?”

Ben kissed her back, settling his weight more comfortably on top of her. He had no desire to leave her body yet. He even waited until Regina was asleep before easing himself gently away.

About two in the morning, Regina woke while Ben was removing the rest of her clothes.

“Hi,” she said, sleepy but excited again to see Ben bending over her. “I’m really glad you’re still here.”

When the slip was over her head and heading to the floor, Ben ran appreciative hands over the lacy bra under it.

“Where else would I be?” Ben asked, his dry tone implying just how strange he thought Regina’s comment was under the circumstances.

When her clothes were completely gone, Ben pulled Regina to the edge of the bed until her feet touched the floor. Leaning himself at an angle to her body, Ben stood on the floor between her knees, rocking himself into Regina until she screamed in release.

Not long after, she begged him to stop moving. Staying inside her, Ben remained bent over her body, bracing himself on his hands as he watched her breathing go from erratic to normal again.

“Oh no,” Ben told her, when Regina’s eyelids drooped and she started to drift away. “No sleeping yet, I’m not done with you, lady.”

Regina moaned as Ben kissed her breasts, laving the ends with his tongue until both nipples were straining once more. Then Ben lifted and dragged Regina up into the bed until he was poised above her.

Hard and pulsing still, he pushed inside her as far as he could get once more. Stroking her slowly and thoroughly to another climax, Ben finally allowed himself to stroke as hard as he wanted until he found blessed relief as well.

When the waves of pleasure stopped rolling through him, he kissed Regina deeply in gratitude while their hearts hammered in sync with each other. Afterward, Regina curled up next to him, sighing brokenly over and over in the dark as she drifted back to sleep.

Ben held her to him tightly, kissing her quivering body when he couldn’t help himself. He was happy with her satisfaction, but quite aware he hadn’t even lost the edge of his need for her yet. The possessive feelings he had were too much too soon, Ben knew, but they were growing stronger every moment he spent with Regina.

Ben stared at the ceiling for a long time, pondering the amazement of how much he enjoyed being with her, before he finally fell into an exhausted sleep.

About five in the morning, Ben woke up fully aroused again to find Regina had taken what she could of his length into her mouth. It was a pleasure he’d seldom known in his life and certainly hadn’t expected so soon with Regina.

She did things to him with her teeth and tongue, things Ben hadn’t even known were possible, until eventually giving him the longest orgasm of his life. Since Ben literally couldn’t move afterward, he had to wonder how any man could have found the energy to run away from Regina Logan’s bed.

“So how did I do?” Regina asked Ben, watching his labored breathing return to something a little more normal.

Ben opened tired eyes to see her head still resting on one of his legs, her red hair spread across his thigh.

How did you do?
” Ben laughed, thinking Regina was teasing or fishing for a compliment.

He yelped when Regina smacked his other thigh with a stinging hand. “Ouch! What was that for?” Ben asked, shocked by her action.

“Damn it, Ben. Don’t laugh at my question. I need to know,” Regina demanded. “It was my first time.”

Your first time?
” Ben demanded. “You’re telling me I’m the first man you ever went down on?”

Ben swore in disbelief and threw an arm across his eyes so he wouldn’t have to look at her. On one hand, the woman was amazing both for her sexual knowledge and her enthusiasm. On the other, Ben was simply elated to be Regina Logan’s first in anything.

“God help me,” Ben said quietly, thinking he should have paid more attention to what Alfred and Daniel said about her. Regina was both a testimony and a contradiction to what the world thought of her.

Expecting simple praise and not understanding Ben’s odd reaction, Regina shrugged in the semi-dark. “I knew
how
to do it. I just hadn’t practiced. I wasn’t interested in pleasuring a man that way before you,” she told him.

Damn,
Regina
,” Ben choked out her name. Humbled, and on the verge of admitting the depth of his feelings for her, all Ben could safely say was her name over and over. Her confession was just too much after a night of what Ben already considered the best sex of his life. He closed his eyes trying to think of a suitable reply, but instead fell into a deep and dreamless sleep.

While Ben’s words weren’t the flowery compliment she had hoped for, Regina took Ben’s disbelief that he was her first as a sign of her expertise, and his dead sleep as proof of her success. Leaving his lap reluctantly, Regina crawled up to the pillow to tuck herself contentedly next to Ben’s sleeping form.

She ran a hand across his chest and hard stomach, wondering what Ben did to keep himself so fit at his age. Though not overweight herself, her body was soft and not nearly in as good shape as his. Regina had never liked exercising, so Alexa and Lauren were both better physically maintained than she.

Not the least bit naïve, Regina knew there were any number of younger, more attractive women who’d gladly take her place next to Ben Kaiser if given even half a chance.

Regina sighed in true contentment as she studied Ben’s sleeping form in the dark. Her hand found its way down until it rested on the flaccid proof she had finally managed to sate the closet sex fiend Ben had turned out to be.

Thinking life was strange and sometimes wonderful, Regina contentedly followed Ben into sleep.

Chapter 4

In the week that followed Norfolk, Ben called twice to say hello and just to say he missed her. Lauren had been right about Ben Kaiser being a nice man. A nice man, Regina had learned, didn’t ravish a woman in bed and then just never call.

A nice woman, Regina had concluded, would have been grateful for such common courtesy. Unfortunately, Dr. Regina Logan was not often a nice woman. She might have been a nice woman once, but it had been too long ago for her to remember what it had been like.

As the week wore on, Regina found herself growing more and more frustrated as she worried about the attraction between her and Ben. If they were seen together, there would be public hell to pay. If they didn’t see each other, then what would happen? The thought of never being with Ben again almost made her ill.

Because of her churning emotions, she was hardly sleeping or eating. Normally, she could blame mood swings on her peri-menopausal symptoms or her insomnia, but not this time. She hadn’t even had a hot flash since Ben had kissed her at the country club fundraiser.

This time it was all about the man.

Regina knew she had been a trial all week to her medical office staff and not as supportive as usual to her clients. On Friday, she cancelled appointments and closed her office early in penance. It eased some of the guilt, but in the end didn’t get to the root of her distress.

She needed help figuring things out, but since she was at the top of her field that narrowed the list of people qualified to help her. In fact, she knew only two people who even came close to the level of expertise she needed.

“My God, you look awful,” Alexa said, taking in Regina’s pale face and baggy clothes as she sat dejectedly in a chair across from her. Even Regina’s white doctor’s coat was wrinkled. Alexa waved to the bartender at Eddy’s and pointed to Regina.

Lauren looked at Regina frowning, unable to hide her deep disappointment. She’d been so sure Ben was going to follow Regina to Norfolk. He must have run screaming from Dr. Logan after all, Lauren concluded. That’s the only reason Regina could possibly look so destroyed.

“I’m sure things will look better after a couple martinis,” Lauren cooed, rubbing Regina’s hand. “You look so tired, honey.”

“Well, Judas, what did you expect? That I’d be dancing with stars in my eyes?” Regina asked Lauren, bitterness dripping from her voice.

When the drink appeared, Regina drank the entire glass in a single gulp, handing it back immediately. The server took the empty glass away to refill it.

Alexa snickered, but kept her laughter soft. One of them would have to take Regina home later, she thought. And one day soon, she was going to have a talk with Dr. Logan about her drinking. There were much better ways of handling stress.

Ignoring the Judas reference, mostly because she wondered if she deserved it, Lauren sympathetically petted Regina’s hair.

“Ben didn’t come, did he?” she asked Regina sadly.

Regina looked at Lauren and snorted, lifting the second glass to take a healthy sip of it.

Noticing the look of evil in Regina’s eyes, Alexa started laughing before Regina even answered.

“Oh no, Ben came. In fact, we both came several times,” Regina said easily, laughing at Lauren’s in-drawn breath.

Knowing she deserved the punishment, Regina absorbed the sting of Lauren’s hand smacking her arm without complaint, looking at Lauren’s shocked face with sick pleasure.

“Stop that!” Lauren ordered, embarrassment pinking her face as Alexa roared. “I don’t know why I even bothered to be sympathetic to you. You’re disgusting.”

“And pathetic,” Regina agreed sadly, bursting into tears.

Lauren was appalled. What had she said? What had she done? Regina never cried.

“Regina, I’m sorry if I hurt you,” Lauren said, her own lip quivering.

“Not you,” Regina said between sobs. “Ben.”

Even worse
, Lauren thought,
and it was the second time he’d upset her.

Alexa was shocked to see Regina melt into an emotional puddle. Regina didn’t care what anyone thought about her, much less a man. Who was this guy? She already didn’t like him.

Lauren and Alexa looked at each other over the table. Alexa finally took one of Regina’s hands in hers and squeezed. Lauren reached over and patted Regina’s back as she sobbed.

“Regina—honey, don’t cry,” Lauren said, patting furiously. “Whatever Ben did, I’m sure he didn’t mean it.”

But even as she said the words, Lauren wondered exactly what Ben Kaiser had done. She had been sure Ben was a perfectly nice man. She would have bet money on it.

And this is why I don’t date
, Lauren decided as she handed Regina her bar napkin and then Alexa’s trying to stem the flow of tears.

She had no desire to be in this state over a man ever again in her life. Her marriage had been enough of an emotional roller coaster ride.

“So what happened with him?” Alexa asked when the sobs had dwindled to sniffles. “Do you want to tell us about it?”

Regina wiped at her nose with her last dry bar napkin. She pulled her hand from Alexa’s, shredding the now soggy paper while considering her words.

She looked at Alexa first. “At Lauren’s fundraiser two weeks ago, I ended up kissing a man named Ben Kaiser in the garden. When he found out who I was, he ran screaming of course. They all do. But when I went to my car to go home, he was waiting to apologize. We ended up kissing again, but that was all until he asked Lauren out to dinner.”

Alexa glared at Lauren, who shook her head rapidly from side to side, eyes wide. “It’s not like it sounds,” Lauren denied.
