“Nope,” Blaze said smugly.

I glanced around one more time before we reached the car; he was slowly getting up from his knees, dragging himself toward the car and trying to open the door, grimacing in pain.

Fucking pussy.

Chapter Three

GRACE

I took a step back from Heather’s crazy ass and sighed. “Jesus, Heather, would you put the gun down?” I held my hands up in the air. “You’re acting really dramatic and crazy right now!”

She laughed sarcastically. “Right, I’m the crazy one.” She closed the small distance I’d managed to put between us and bounced the gun up and down. “Coming from the girl I just caught trying to trick my brother into having her baby!”

“That’s not what happened!” I took another step back, causing my back to crash into the door. “I was going to tell Cutter I flushed them, I was just waiting for the right time. It’s… it’s complicated.”

“No, it’s not, Grace, it’s very uncomplicated actually.” She shook the gun up and down roughly. “It’s the opposite of complicated! Now give me back my phone before I do something I regret!”

She looked wild, reminding me of her brother when he got worked up about something. Completely and totally unreasonable and unwilling to listen to anything that you had to say. I reached down to hand her phone over, and even though she was pointing a gun at me, I still couldn’t bring myself to do it. She would call Cutter right away and he had enough on his plate right now. Plus, I really wanted him to find out about this from me so that he could have all the facts.

I put her phone back down and shook my head no slowly. “I can’t do that, Heather. You have to trust me, I’m not out to hurt your brother in any way, I swear.” I took a step toward her. “Now put the gun down.”

Her hands shook up and down. “No! Get back!”

I rolled my eyes; this was starting to get a little bit ridiculous. I mean, she couldn’t even talk about her brother’s best friend without blushing; she wasn’t going to shoot anyone.

“Heather, we both know you aren’t going to shoot me.”

“No, we don’t! I could shoot you!”

I reached out to grab it from her. “You don’t even know how to use the damn thing!” God, what was it with this family? Didn’t anyone trust anyone these days? Like I didn’t have enough problems, it seemed like I had to constantly worry about Cutter’s impulsive little sister. One minute she liked me, the next she hated me. What an emotional tug of war.

Heather moved away from me and pointed the gun toward the ground, letting off a live round. I jumped back and hit the wall for the second time, missing the bullet by mere inches.

I glanced at the bullet hole in the bottom of the wall. “You crazy bitch!” I yelled. “What the hell is wrong with you?” I pushed myself up off the ground; somehow I’d fallen in the commotion. “You almost shot me!”

Heather looked startled like she couldn’t believe what she had just done but she recovered fast, trying to act like she’d done it on purpose. “I told you I knew what I was doing!”

I shook my head and charged at her, taking the gun out of her hand in one quick motion. She struggled for a second but gave it up quickly, clearly not as comfortable with the whole situation as she led on. “Please, you’ve clearly never shot one before!”

“I have so!”

I raised my eyebrows at her. “Really?”

She shrugged. “It’s not my fault. I’ve been asking my brother and Blaze to take me shooting forever but they always refuse, apparently there’s no need for it when they're always around to protect me.”

I emptied the magazine of the gun and moved past her toward the bed.

“Give me my phone, Grace,” Heather said, pushing her hair behind her ear. “Or in five minutes when your guard gets back from getting me lunch I’m going to scream bloody murder so loud that him and ten other brothers will come running as fast as they can, and then I’m going to tell them everything.” She moved toward the bed, leaning in close like she had a secret only I was allowed to hear. “You know how loyal they are, you really think they aren’t going to believe Cutter’s little sister?” She shrugged. “They’ll beat the shit out of you now and ask questions later.”

Dread came over my body. I knew she was right. They were almost too loyal; the thought of anyone trying to play or take advantage of Cutter would push them over the edge. He was their leader and brother.

But I couldn’t let her call Cutter either.

Either way, I was screwed.

Unless…

I sighed, I couldn’t tell her the truth.

I just couldn’t.

Could I?

The pain in my stomach told me that I had no other choice.

“Can you just let me explain, please?” I pleaded with her. “I’m not going to feed you any bullshit, I promise, just the truth.” I really didn’t want to tell anyone but who knew? Maybe Heather would help snap me out of whatever twisted world I had been allowing my head to live in since this whole mess started.

Heather shrugged, like she had nothing better to do so she might as well listen, and maybe she didn’t. I knew something intense was going on with her and Cutter, possibly Blaze, too. But Cutter didn’t seem to want to talk about it and when I had tried to call Heather back a few times this morning I had gotten no answer from her end.

“I’m growing old here,” she said, acting annoyed, but she sat down next to me on the bed anyway. She glanced at her phone, still in my hand. “Can I, at least, check my messages?”

No doubt she was hoping she had something from Blaze.

I put the screen face down, now wasn’t the time.

“It’s your father,” I told her, letting out a deep breath I hadn’t realized I was holding in. “He… he made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. Literally.” I glanced at her, wondering if I should even bother carrying on. I mean
,
he was her father after all. I didn’t know if she would even believe me.

Shock and confusion washed over her face. Clearly this wasn’t what she was expecting. She turned the statement over in her mind again and again and for a second, I thought she was going to walk out of there and get the rest of the brothers, sure that I was full of shit. But then I saw something else in her eyes, something I hadn't been expecting.

Realization.

She jumped up from the bed, disgust written over her face. “You mean my father told you that if you had my brother’s son he wouldn’t hand you over to The Misfits?” Her mouth hung open so wide that I could see her perfect teeth shining out like a freshly waxed car.

“Wow,” I said. “You don’t take long to figure things out.”

Again, I hadn’t even known that she was aware The Misfits wanted anything to do with me. How could Cutter and Blaze be so oblivious when it came to her? She probably knew more about their business than some of their highest ranked brothers.

“Of course, I don’t! My father has only been obsessing over Cutter giving him a grandson forever!” Her eyes grew wide. “I can’t believe I didn’t put it together before you said it! He’s been trying to get Cutter to knock someone up for years or to find a girl to settle down with.”

I threw my hands up in the air. “Enter girl.”

Heather shook her head and sat back down next to me. “I’m sorry.”

“It’s fine, you didn’t know.”

“Oh, no, I’m not sorry about today.”

I shot her a glare.

“I mean I am sorry about today,” she backtracked. “But, mostly I’m sorry that you said yes to my father in the first place. You might have been better off with The Misfits, getting involved with my father is always a bad idea, he’s pretty ruthless.”

“Tell me something I don’t know.”

“He’s probably having you watched right now!” She glanced around the room nervously. “Have you checked the room for hidden cameras? He did that to me one time when he thought I was sneaking out at night.”

Hidden cameras? Cutter and my sexual antics flashed through my mind. There was no way his father could have seen any of that, right? The thought made me shutter. I would die of humiliation!

“You really think he would do that?” I jumped up and started looking around the room frantically, letting my eyes dart to every corner of the place. “Where did he put yours?”

I looked back at Heather, she was grinning.

“Really? You can joke at a time like this?” I scowled.

“Sorry, it was too easy.” She walked over to Cutter’s closet and yanked it open, dragging out a huge bag. “Here, throw some clothes for us in here.” She walked over to the wall and pulled the picture off that hid Cutter’s safe.

“Why? What are you doing?”

“We’re going on a road trip.” She spun the dial on the safe and popped it open. “How much do you think we will need?” She grabbed a handful of money and started counting out bills.

“How do you know your brother’s safe combination?” I gasped.

She rolled her eyes. “Please, I memorized those numbers years ago.” She shoved a bunch of bills into her pocket. “This should be enough.” She glanced at the still empty bag on the floor. “Can you try to hurry up?”

“And where do you think we’re going?”

“We’re going to find my brother and B-“ she stopped, holding back. “We’re going to find my brother so that you can tell him about what’s going on. This kind of thing really can’t wait.”

What was she, nuts? We couldn’t go chasing after Cutter and Blaze. First off, I didn’t even know where they were. Second off, this was clearly a pretty important night for Cutter and the rest of the brothers. A dangerous one, too, I couldn’t just go showing up there. He wanted me as far away from it as possible.

“I can’t go after him! I don’t even know where he is!”

“I know where they are,” Heather announced happily. “I mean I know where he is. He’s on his way to go and get Stone to hand over to The Misfits; we will just catch up with them and have a little chat, that’s all. No big deal.” She walked over to me and grabbed her phone out of my hand, seeing an opportunity to catch me off guard.

“I can’t. I promised him I wouldn’t do stuff like this anymore.”

“Fine,” she shrugged. “I’ll go and tell him for you.”

“You can’t!”

“I can and I will,” she assured me. “And if you try to stop me, I’ll tell my brother what’s going on before I even get there. It’s up to you, either stay or come.” She glanced at her phone, frowning when she realize she had no new calls or texts. For someone who was mad at Blaze she sure wanted to hear from him pretty bad.

In general, I suspected this had more to do with Blaze than her brother. I’m sure she was worried about Cutter, but it was different when you were in love with someone, different when you knew they were out there fighting a fight that was so dangerous they might not come home safe at the end of it. She was just as worried about Blaze as I was about Cutter. She wanted to see that he was okay in person.

Even if she was pissed off at him right now.

The whole thing combined with how worried I was about Cutter tugged on my heartstrings and before I knew it I found myself justifying her crazy plan. I did want to see Cutter in person, and maybe he would be so flattered that I had come all that way just to check on him that he wouldn’t be as furious as I thought. And maybe, just maybe, he would be too involved with his other business that the deal I made with his father wouldn’t seem like such a big deal.

Hey, I could dream, right?

“What’s the alternative?” Heather asked, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Sitting here all night and worrying about him? Wondering if he’s going to come through that door, safe, at any moment? It’ll be torture, trust me.” She looked sad like she was all too used to it, waiting for someone she loved to come back to her, praying every second that he was safe and not lying on the ground in a pile of blood somewhere.

It must be so much harder for her than it was for me. At least, I knew for sure that Cutter loved me, or cared about me in that way, whatever you wanted to call it. It must be a silent torture eating her away on the inside, wondering if the man you wanted more than anything else in the entire world wanted you back.

She was right, though. I didn’t want to sit here and think about Cutter all night long and if he was safe or not while Heather was out and about, seeing it up close and personal for herself. I glanced at her, taking in her serious stance. It must really suck to have both a brother and lover caught up in this life.

“Fine,” I threw my hands up in the air. “Fine, you win, we can go.”

“Really?” Heather looked excited but shocked. “Wow, that was way easier than I thought, I thought for sure it would take me, at least, a few hours.” She kicked the bag across the floor and it skidded to the front of my feet. “Get to packing, Grace.”

“Now, wait just a minute…” I glanced down.

“Which do you want? This Glock or… this other big one?”

I shot my head up just in time to see Heather swinging two guns back and forth around her hands like they were children’s toys. “I think I better take the big one, I have a really big purse in the car that I could shove it in, it’ll be really out of sight.”

“ARE YOU NUTS?” I tried to cross the room and grab them from her but I stumbled over the stupid bag and was barely able to regain my balance. “We can’t bring any of Cutter’s guns with us!” I told her once I was standing up somewhat straight again.

“It would be nuts to not bring any of his guns with us,” Heather told me. “We have no idea what we’re walking into or where our men… I mean, where Cutter and Blaze are but knowing them you can bet that it isn’t going to be the safest situation.” She held the smaller one out to me.

“You’re just making me want to go more and more.”

She sighed. “Relax, we probably won't even need them, it’s just a precaution. If everything goes as planned we will sneak in there, make sure everything is going okay and then be home in time for a nice breakfast tomorrow morning.”

“But I thought the whole point of going was so that I could tell Cutter the truth about the deal I had made with your father! I thought the truth just couldn’t wait!” I pointed out to her, using her own words against her.

The more she talked, the more I was starting to realize this had more to do with Blaze and less to do with me and her brother. Sure, she wanted to make sure her brother was okay and I was sure she thought he deserved to know the truth but she also wanted to be close to the man she loved.
