He found himself tensing with anxiety as Ashley called out to her. The little girl looked up and when she saw her mamma, her eyes lit up like a kid who’d just discovered a thousand presents under the Christmas tree.

Without hesitation she flew across the yard, short, chubby legs chugging like crazy and her pigtails flying wildly as she flung herself into Ashley’s open arms. She lifted the girl with ease, hugging her and spattering her face with kisses and whispering I love yous and I missed you so muches.

Her little arms wrapped around Ashley’s neck and she held tight, kissing her mother back and giggling with glee.

Then suddenly she became aware of his presence and disentangled her arms from Ashley’s neck. She peered at him directly with the same starry-blue eyes Ashley possessed. Her little brows were scrunched together with curiosity and her chubby cheeks were pink with excitement.

“Hi,” he found himself saying.

“Are you my daddy?” she asked point-blank. “Mommy says my daddy is very handsome and he has the same hair color as me. You must be him.”

At her sweet, innocent voice, something warm unleashed itself inside him. It was an almost indescribable feeling. Something he’d never felt before in his life.

“Yes, sweetie. I finally found your daddy. He’s finally home.”

Both of them smiled at him and Colter knew Ashley was right. He was finally home.
