PETRUCHIO (cont.)

’Twas I won the wager, though you hit the white;

And, being a winner, God give you good night!

HORTENSIO

Now, go thy ways; thou hast tamed a curst shrew.

LUCENTIO

’Tis a wonder, by your leave, she will be tamed so.

APPENDIX

T
he play comes to a close, and Christopher Sly returns to view in dingy clothing outside of the tavern. Rousing from a drunken sleep, he asks the nearby tapster if he is indeed a Lord, citing a strange dream he had of fine clothing, wealth, and a play. The tapster tells him the bad news that he is not a Lord and suggests that Sly head home to his wife before she gets angry and beats him. Amused, Sly exclaims that he has had the best dream of his life and says, “I know now how to tame a shrew” and that he’ll go to her soon “and tame her too” (Appendix. 16, 20).
