Lip balm (look for petroleum-free products based on soothing, healing, safe beeswax)

Sunscreen (look for sunscreen that is aluminum and PABA-free)

Baby powder (look for powder that is aluminum and talcum free, such as powder made from cornstarch)

Hot-water bottle or moist heat electric-heating pad

Ice pack (gel-filled, preferably in a case with Velcro closures, so it can be wrapped around a waist, knee, arm, or shoulder; leave in the freezer so it's ready when needed)

Calamine lotion (for inflammatory skin conditions, e.g., poison ivy, chickenpox, heat rash)

Epsom salts (add to baths for sore, aching, or strained muscles)

Aveeno or organic rolled oats and cheesecloth (follow directions on the container, and add to warm bath for itching, sunburn, and skin irritations including rashes, measles, chickenpox, eczema, impetigo, hives)

Antibacterial liquid soap or spray (usually based on tea tree oil and/or lavender; keep purse-size waterless and spray versions in your car's glove compartment and your child's lunchbox or backpack)

Socks (Cotton socks plus a pair of heavy wool socks big enough to be worn over the cotton ones. To lower high fevers quickly and safely: soak the cotton socks in cold water, wring them out, and put them on your child's feet. Immediately put the wool socks over the wet cotton ones. Put your child back under the bedcovers. Within fifteen to thirty minutes, the cotton socks will be dry, and the fever should have dropped.)

Sterilized needle (use to remove splinters, then re-sterilize before putting away)

Scissors with rounded tips (use to safely remove bandages; great for home haircuts, too)
