He removed his hand from his shoulder and looked at the wound, he had lost a lot of blood.

“Chase!”

Chase turned at the sound of his name and saw Bobby Kennedy running towards him.  “Where are the others?”  Bobby asked.

“Jacob was shot, I never saw Faraday.”  Chase replied.  “Is Jane with you?”

Bobby nodded.  “She’s in the car.  She was shot in the leg, so I left her there.  Have you been shot as well?”  Bobby said, gesturing to the wound.

“I’ll be okay.  What do we do now?”

“We need to wait for the others, but you and Jane need to get to the hospital.  We can’t go to Parkland, it would be too risky.”

“I don’t know that it would be Bobby, people have been rising up, and there have been gunfights in the streets.”

“Chase!”

Chase froze as he heard Jacob’s voice, he was sure that the man was dead.  He turned and watched as Jacob walked towards him, seemingly uninjured.  He had his gun pointed at Chase’s head.

“You son of a bitch!”  Jacob yelled.

“What is going on?”  Bobby asked in terror.

“This son of a bitch shot me!”  Jacob yelled.

“Calm down.”  Bobby tried.

“Calm down?  If he had shot Jack would you be telling him to calm down?”

Bobby did not reply.

Chase was terrified, he had never seen Jacob looking so angry.

Chapter 61

Bobby struggled from the diner, his mind in disarray.  He had felt so sure that he was doing the right thing after he had spoken to Jane.  He almost fell as he walked down the steps, he grasped onto the railing to keep himself upright.  It was no wonder she liked Chase, he was handsome, brave, and he could walk without using a fucking cane.

He removed a cigarette from his jacket pocket and lit it.  The car they had rented was nowhere to be seen, he had been made a fool of.  Sarah and Chase had probably fled Dallas, he wouldn’t see her again.

He felt so stupid for ever having thought that he could have anything good, anything that would make him happy.  He had never even slept with a woman, Jane had been right with what she had said to him.

He had had chances of course.  When he was in the mob women had thrown themselves at him, but he was too scared.  He may have looked young, but he had been far from it.  The years had passed, and he had grown more, and more nervous.

The hell of Auschwitz had made him almost impulsive when he had seen Sarah.  Jacob’s comment hadn’t actually made any sense until he had seen the way that she had looked at Chase from the diner.

He was stood beside the manhole cover and wondered where he would ever find a home, a home that he could enjoy without worrying about saving a life, or ending one.  He looked up the street and saw the body of a Nazi soldier.

He wanted a gun.  For so long he had never been without one and here he was on the most dangerous day, perhaps in world history, and he was unarmed.

He took a pull on his cigarette and considered his options.  He could wait here, hope that she would come back for him.  He could leave, but where would he go?  He could only wait and hope.

He was distracted by the sound of a familiar voice.

“Where should I go, just tell me?”

Bobby was stunned, he had never expected to hear that Scottish accent again.  He listened for a reply, but there was none.  He bent down and struggled to remove the manhole cover, but he succeeded.

“Faraday?”  He shouted into the hole.

“Bobby?”  Faraday replied stunned.

“Come up here.”

Chapter 62

Scarlett put the cigarette in her mouth and climbed out of the car.  As she opened the door, she saw more blood pouring onto the roadside, just as she had when she had replaced Clint in the driver’s seat.

Before going to her mother, she opened the back door and looked down at the man that had been like a brother to her.  He had never looked so pale, he was drenched in blood.  She knew immediately from looking at him that he was dead.  She felt for a pulse anyway, there was none.

She walked around the other side of the car and felt Kennedy’s pulse, it was strong, but he looked ghastly.

She raised her arm to her wounded shoulder and ran to her mother.  She opened the passenger door and saw that the seat was covered in more blood.  She climbed in anyway.

“Mum I’m so sorry!”

Jane pulled her daughter towards her and kissed her forehead.  It was only then that she saw her daughter had also been shot.

“Jesus! Scarlett, are you okay?”

“They shot us.”  Scarlett sobbed into her Mum’s shoulder.

“Have you seen your father?”  Jane asked, not knowing if she wanted to know the answer.

“No.  We got Kennedy and came back for you.  They started shooting at us.”  She continued crying.

“What about Clint and Jack?”  Jane asked.

“Clint’s dead.”

Jane was crying now.  “What about Jack?”

“He’s been shot, but he’s alive.”

Jane turned away from her daughter, she had no idea what she should do.  She wanted to save her daughter and Jack if it was possible.  She needed help herself, but she was terrified of leaving in case Faraday was wounded in the park.  She looked at the other car, it was covered with bullet holes and she wondered whether it would be drivable.

“Scarlett is that car still functional.”

She didn’t reply, she continued sobbing into her mother’s arms.

“Scarlett does that car work?”

“I don’t know.”  She sobbed.

Jane looked down at her leg, she knew she wouldn’t be able to walk.

“Scarlett you need to bring Jack and Clint to this car.”

“Why?”

“We need to get to the hospital.”  Jane replied.

“What about the others?”

“The longer we wait, the more likely we all are to die.”  Jane replied bluntly.

“We could try the other car, it would save moving them.”  Scarlett replied.

Jane nodded.  “Go and check it out.”

Chapter 63

Sarah left the diner absolutely appalled at the way Bobby had spoken to her.  She had gone through hell and back to save him.  She got into the car and saw Jacob climbing from the manhole cover before replacing it again.

She watched as he ran into Turtle Creek Park and followed slowly behind him with the car.  She parked up at the entrance and stepped out of the car.  As she walked into the park, she admired the beauty of the place, gunshots could be heard in almost every direction.

She walked a little further into the park and she looked to her left.   She saw that Jacob was now standing by a wall, which overlooked the creek beside Bobby Kennedy and Chase.  She walked towards them and could hear the argument ensuing.

“Jacob you don’t need to do this.”  Kennedy pleaded.

It was then that she noticed Jacob was pointing a gun directly at Chase’s head.

“Jacob what are you doing?”  She asked in shock.

“Sarah?”  Chase spoke in surprise.

“Why are you here?”  Jacob demanded.

Sarah walked passed Jacob to stand beside Bobby Kennedy.  “We came back to help.”

“We?”   Jacob asked.

“Bobby is just around the corner.  Chase are you okay?”  She asked, noticing the wound in his shoulder.

He didn’t reply, he just watched Jacob beginning to chuckle.

“Would you like me to shoot her instead?”

Chapter 64

Faraday climbed out of the manhole and joined Bobby on the sidewalk.  He replaced the cover and lit a cigarette.  The beautiful bright sky was almost blinding after having been stuck in the drain for so long.

As he looked at Bobby in the light of day, he saw how unwell his former friend looked.  He was so thin and his skin looked almost grey.  His blue eyes that had once been piercing were now almost like two black holes in the middle of his head, they looked as though they could never be happy again.  He noticed that Bobby was grasping his cane so tightly, almost as if he was struggling to stay upright.

“What are you doing here?”  Faraday asked.

“We were in the diner, and Chase climbed out of the drain and ran towards the park.  Sarah followed and I stayed here to wait on her.”  Bobby replied, sounding almost bitter.

“Did you see Jacob?”  Faraday asked.

Bobby shook his head.

“He was going after Chase.”  Faraday spoke urgently.

Bobby did not look particularly interested.  “Who were you talking to?”

“What?”  Faraday asked in confusion.

“Down there, I heard you talking?”

“Oh, just myself.”  Faraday replied.

Bobby raised his eyebrows in surprise and was about to ask another question when they were interrupted by the sound of gunfire coming from the park.

There was a red-haired man running away from a group of six Nazi soldiers.  The man was armed with a revolver, whilst the Nazis had Mauser machine guns.

Bobby watched the red-haired man run into the park and was certain he had seen Billy Beane.

“Did you....”  Faraday began.

“It was Billy.”  Bobby nodded.

As the Nazis disappeared into the park, they could hear more shooting.

“Jesus, that’s where they were meeting.”  He looked at Bobby, who didn’t seem capable of running.  “Bobby I need to go and help them.”

“Go, I’ll follow.  My hip isn’t in the best state.”

Faraday sprinted off in the direction of the park.

Chapter 65

Jane had her arm around Scarlett as they struggled over to the other car.  They were both in tears, of pain and fear.

“I’ll drive.”  Jane announced.  “I know Dallas better than you do.”

Scarlett helped her Mum into the driver’s seat, she was going to move Jack but knew that it could make his injuries worse.  She opened the back door, behind the driver’s seat and gasped in horror at the state of the Nazi soldier. He was riddled with bullet holes and the blood was in thick pools all over the back seats.

Clint was still lying motionless on the floor, he looked as though he had been dead for a long time now.

Scarlett pulled the Nazi soldier out of the car and left him at the roadside, she climbed into where he had been sitting and she was quickly covered in more blood.

“What about Bobby Kennedy?”  Scarlett asked.  “Didn’t he say he was coming back for you?”

“He said he would only be two minutes.  He’s been gone for about twenty.”  Jane replied.

They were both silenced by the sound of gunfire coming from the park.

Jane wished that she hadn’t heard it, she knew there was a good chance that Faraday was down there.  She wanted to keep Scarlett safe, but she couldn’t leave him, he would come back for her.  “Scarlett keep your head down.”

Scarlett did as she was told.

Jane started the ignition and sped down the path into the park.

Chapter 66

The red-haired man ran through the park, firing his gun blindly back towards the Nazi soldiers.  Jacob still had his gun raised, it was still pointing towards Chase.  He scowled as he heard the gunfire coming towards them.

“Best get your gun out.”  He snapped at Chase.  “Just make sure you don’t hit me this time.”

Chase nodded, relieved to have a stay of execution.

“Run!”  The red haired man shouted at them.  He was thrown violently to the ground as dozens of bullets entered his back.

“Bobby take Sarah back to the car!”  Chase barked.

He and Jacob took cover behind two trees, whilst Bobby and Sarah sprinted in the direction of the car.

Chase tried to fire a shot at the Nazi soldiers, but he couldn’t poke his head out to look at them.  The machine guns were battering both his tree, and the tree that Jacob was hiding behind.

“What do we do?”  Chase shouted across to Jacob, who was around three metres away to his right.  For the first time since he had known Jacob, the man actually looked scared.  That scared him far more than the Nazis currently firing at them.
