He just wasn’t built for abstinence. Not since he’d discovered women. With three brothers seven years older, well, he’d known about women for a while. He leaned over and kissed down her spin. Couldn’t resist, not when she was before him as a sweet treat begging to be licked and taken and enjoyed.

The curve of her hip was soft and warm as he lapped up the damp rain from her side. Licked and sucked and nibbled as he took her by the hips and rolled her over. Need and curiosity stared at him from her blue eyes and he leaned over again, bending her knees up, opened her thighs and took what he wanted.

Pressed his tongue to her natural wetness, tasted her sugary essence. Her head tilted back, legs shifted against his body and he groaned, pressing his mouth firmer, nuzzled alongside her soft curls.

He took his time. Learned her sweet spots, had her in his hands to do with as he wanted. Raised her up, took her to the edge of satisfaction and brought her back until it wasn’t rain coating her, but a sheen of sweat with her full red lips parted. Breath panted out in rushed exhales. Body tightened in rhythm around his tongue.

His name whispered across her lips over and over. He wanted her to look at him when she said it, but he’d have that in a moment. When he was above her. When he’d be close enough to feel those breaths of air. Her thighs pressed against him, squeezing him, hips rising and this time he’d give it to her.

He concentrated on her tight center, used his fingers. Her body strained. Her head rolled back, breasts thrust up. The dip under her ribs and the slope of her belly blazed across his mind. A throaty moan purred with her panting.

There was no more waiting. He dug in his bag and pulled out a condom. Making quick work to strip off his shorts, he covered himself and was over her, starting at her belly button, kissing up her waist, taking her nipples. She grabbed his head and pulled him against her chest. Nails scraped him, tugging him up and he followed her demand until sealing his mouth across hers.

Her arms wound around his neck and he lowered his hips, positioned himself and sank into her wet, snug heat. She cried out, legs tightened against his thighs and he rocked, trying to find release.

He wanted to go slow, wanted to drag it out, but she lifted against him and he thrust. She was tight around him already and he took her. Took her harder than he probably should have, but her grabbing at him, her hands going down his back and legs winding about his waist for her heels to dig in his ass, he couldn’t. She demanded and he gave.

Willingly gave. Another cry shuddered out of her throat and she stilled. He leaned over, dropped his weight to his elbows and cupped her face. Her eyes parted, heavy and slightly unfocused as her lashes fluttered and that was the end of him. One last thrust and he came. He dropped his head to the curve of her neck as pleasure flowed through, relaxed his body.

He rolled to his back. Sweat damped and still breathing hard, she turned and snuggled into him. An arm was across his waist. Her heaving breasts pressed to his side.

Yeah, probably shouldn't have done that, but right now, he was damn glad he did. Could go for it again. In a few minutes.

Had a feeling he could do this for a few weeks at the least. There was just one problem. He stroked his hand down her back. “When do you go back home?”

Her fingers grazing against his side, nearly tickling, but not quite, stilled. “Sunday. I have to be back at work on Monday.”

He frowned up at the tent roof. Just a few days then. Not as long as he’d wanted. But he could do things here, get some things in motion and then start wrapping up details back home. Then come back and maybe continue this. “How often do you come back home?”

Her lips pressed together for a moment, then her gentle caresses to his side started again. “This is my first time in five years.”

“That’s not very often.”

“Not very many people I like here.” She yawned. “I tend to avoid it when I can.”

It bothered him more than he’d like to think. That there was only a few days left and that was it. It shouldn’t bother him, but it did. He should be happy. If he wasn’t going to think of her as a longtime sort of thing—and well, to be fucking honest, he just didn’t know anymore. But he knew the idea of her leaving and not coming back anytime soon bothered the shit out of him.

An image of her driving away flashed. Dust clouding the air from her bike. Getting smaller and smaller until disappearing. He didn’t like the thought. Not one damn bit, but what the fuck was he supposed to do about it? Ask a woman to come back to a place she mostly hated so they could continue this a little longer?

Christ on a cracker, he’d call someone nuts if they asked him that. He should be nuts for even thinking it.

Chapter Nine

Rebecca stroked along the length of his back. The small sheet was tossed off and only tangled around his legs. Faint light shown through the roof of the tent and highlighted muscular lines on his back, ass and thighs.

Even though he slept, his hand was on her thigh in a possessive grip. He’d been touchy like that anytime they’d been close since they left the pond. She hoped it didn’t change anytime soon. It made her feel wanted and sexy just by being her. She’d never had that before. It turned her on and she wanted to wake him up and let him know, but he needed rest.

Today he’d worked on the drive. He cut and trimmed branches and opened the drive up and then had to pick up the large limbs left behind. She’d helped when she could, but had been tied up talking with the loggers clearing the front, taking Parker, the mechanic who was building gates, to the places they needed gates for measurements.

By the time she’d finished all that, Grant had been nearly done and insisted she’d be most helpful driving his truck as he loaded. She’d gotten out when she could and threw limbs in the backend, but she hadn’t been able to get near enough.

She traced the lines of the tattoo on his back, wishing she knew why this. What had made him pick it? Just a random dart thrown at a wall of designs? Flipping a coin, or in a drunk haze, had it made sense?

He moaned and rolled to his back, pulling her against him. “You’re awake.”

She snuggled against his side, put her head on his chest and wrapped her arm across his waist. “You fed me s’mores for supper. Can’t sleep for all the sugar.”

“Don’t blame me because you pushed me in this tent instead of going to the grocery store. Let me open the door and let some air in.” He moaned and sat forward and unzipped the tent flap and stared out. He didn’t move. Didn’t lie back down.

She sat up behind him. “Something out there?”

He only stared out.

“Grant.” She kissed his shoulder and wrapped her arm around his warm, tense chest.

He shuddered and zipped the flap. “Never mind.”

She frowned and watched him lay back and tug up his underwear and reach for his jeans.

“Is something wrong?”

He paused with his jeans in his hands. “No.”

“Are you going somewhere?”

He frowned. “No. Why?”

“You’re getting dressed.”

“Oh.” He looked at his pants and then tossed them aside. “Come here.”

She fell into his arms and he pulled her against him, holding her tight. Really, really tight. “Grant?”

“Hmm?”

“Are you sure there’s nothing wrong?”

“Fine. Why?”

“You’re about to squeeze me to death.”

His grip loosened. A little. “Sorry.”

She managed to get on her side and propped up to look at him. She brushed her hand across his forehead and raked her fingers over his prickly shaved head. He was more than she’d ever thought she’d find when she came back here. For a moment she dared to think of next week with him. Would they make it to next month just by doing this? Falling into each other’s arms? Just enjoying each other’s company? It was a dangerous thought, one she knew wouldn’t come true because she couldn’t stay in this town. She continued caressing from his head, down his neck and arm and back up, but a sheen of sweat on him stopped her. “What’s going on?”

“It’s nothing.”

“Grant.”

“It’s stupid.”

“Just tell me. You’re making me worried.”

He groaned. “When I was seven or so, I heard my dog barking outside. He was just a puppy. Thought maybe he’d been let out and not let back in. So I go outside to find him. It’s the middle of the night. Darker than shit. I can hardly see in front of my face, but I can hear my dog crying from the corn field. I walk through the stalks, trying to find him, calling him, confused why he won’t come out. And then something taps me from behind. I turn around and momma’s scarecrow is dancing in front of me, humming this song.
Dududu…mmmmhhhmmdduuudduuuu
.
Grant
, the damn thing whispered at me.”

The heat in the tent disappeared and a cold blanket draped over her. She scooted in close and put her head back on his chest and hugged him. “Oh, God.”

He fingered through her hair. “So anyway, I turned and ran. Corn leaves raked over my face. Cobs smacked me, but I just kept running. And ran into a werewolf. He looks up at the sky and howls. I’m screaming. The werewolf is howling. The scarecrow found me again with that freaking humming and he’s wrapping his arms around me. I can still feel the scrape of the straw on my arms.”

She pressed a kiss to his shoulder.

“I just ran until this black figure jumped out from between a cornrow in front of me. I tripped trying to get away and everything goes black. I woke up a few hours later. My head is throbbing. It’s foggy. My puppy is curled up next to me. At some point I had pissed my pants. No clue when. I had to stay in that fucking field, in that fog, for the rest of the night because it was too dark I didn’t know which way to go. No noises to lead me back to the house.” He shuddered. “My older brothers had thought the joke was funny until momma got a hold of them and tore their asses up. I know it sounds stupid, but the fog still creeps me out a little.”

She rolled and straddled his lap. “I think you need something else to remember when you see the fog.”

“Oh, yeah?” His hands rubbed up her sides and she reached forward, reached over his head and flipped on the little battery operated light.

She grinned at seeing his brows raise. “Oh, yeah. Something happy.”

She never would have turned a light on like that before, but he gave her this surety about herself. Confidence that he saw the woman she was trying to find. As he stared at her, his eyes moving down her chest and stomach widened. His hands gripped her tightened. More assurance settled in her bones.

She kissed across his chest, pressed her lips over his flat nipples and moved down, not waiting, not taking this slow. The more she kissed, the faster she moved, the more color filled his pale cheeks, fading the unhappy memory.

The trim line of hair down his belly was soft against her cheek, the skin firm under. She kissed and nibbled along the edge of the underwear he’d recently slid up as she lowered the band, careful to lift the elastic over his strong erection and freed him.

She held him in a firm grip. Skin was smooth against her lips as she took the top of him in her mouth. The length of him slid over her tongue until his wide top touched the back of her throat. She closed her hand around the base of him and didn’t wait or tease.

She only gave. His hands combed through her hair and she cupped his balls, lightly tugged at them. In seconds his breath was short. Fingers pulled at her hair and then guided her to take him in and out of her mouth. Hips jerked. Her name was rasped across his mouth.

He grabbed her by the arms and dragged her up his body. She lay atop him, her hands curling around his shoulders.

“Is that that way you like it, Babycakes?”

“Almost too much.” His grin flashed. “Condoms in the bag to the left, over my head. Front zipper.”

She reached, stretching over him and he cupped her breasts. Thumbs raked over her sensitive tips and he pulled one nipple in his mouth, sucked and traded for the other. She fumbled with the bag and finally found the small package.

She eased down his body, his kisses trailed up her chest, to her neck and ear. Hands stayed over her breasts. She left a deep kiss, stroked her tongue over his, pressed down until teeth clashed before sitting up on his thighs. She tore open the condom and covered him. He twitched under her and grabbed her hips.

God, he didn’t just have sex with her, he
explored
her. He could probably tell her more things about her body than she could at this point for all of the attention he gave her.

He touched her everywhere, all over. Not a simple touch, but a hold, a grip.

She straddled over his length and sat as he guided. He filled her deeper than he’d been so far and she rocked. The small movement zipped through her body, shudders raked through her blood and she threw all caution to the wind, grabbed his shoulders and rode him.

The hard tips of his calloused fingers dug against her hips as he pulled her against him harder. She bent and arched into him, taking him how she wanted, like she wanted. He moaned, his chest tight under her hands.

Release was close. She rocked faster, pressed down harder. Pressure squeezed and then released. She stiffened as he continued to thrust up, but she just couldn’t. It was too good, too much. Pleasure wrapped through her limbs, left her motionless.

Heart seemed to stop. Breath halted and she crashed against his chest and he thrust up one last time.
