Nontraditional Résumés

FOR CERTAIN
professions or positions, a nontraditional résumé is preferable. For example, you may need to use more than the standard two pages, as is the case in the academic world, or you may need to describe projects you have managed rather than give the particulars of a job. In these instances, hiring authorities know exactly what they are looking for, and they want to see it in your résumé.

For example, the people who look at architect Dwight Germer's résumé (page 164) know what HKS is—that is, they know exactly what Dwight's duties and responsibilities are. But they want to know what
kind
of projects he has worked on, so his résumé provides this information. Similarly, Professor Louis Gasper's résumé (page 174) is
lengthy because it has to provide a lot more information. This is an academic résumé, listing Gasper's publications, the committees he serves on, and his association memberships—information that is especially important to academic hiring committees. In the same vein, positions in the healthcare field require résumés that mention certification, licensures, residencies, and specialty education programs.

Thus, these nontraditional résumés are longer and have more details. Nevertheless, the information has to be presented clearly so that the people reading them quickly find what they need to know. Following are over twenty-five résumés reflecting six major fields, plus information on résumé format best applicable to a position with the federal government. These all fall into the category we call “nontraditional.”

ARCHITECTURE: SENIOR CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATOR

Dwight has one of those ambiguous positions whereby people know in general what he does, but they can't describe it specifically. Usually the résumé of a candidate such as this will concentrate on descriptions of projects completed rather than firms worked for. Dwight's résumé provides great detail on each project—descriptions phrased so as to invite questions from prospective employers. He has selected fairly well-known projects, thereby increasing his chances of meeting people who are familiar with his work or who have mutual experiences. This format helps potential employers envision Dwight's experiences as part of their future.
