CRITIQUE

Rex is a very intelligent guy. He has excellent qualifications, and has a great mix of technical and business skills. He is a very good job candidate. However, you can imagine how difficult it would be for an interviewing or hiring authority to read his résumé—all
nine
pages. Here are the major problems with Rex's original résumé:

Way too long. Rex is trying to sell the “whole enchilada.” Remember, your résumé is simply to sell the reader on the idea of interviewing you.

“Rex Thompson Teachenor.” That's way too pretentious and stuffy sounding—simply “Rex Teachenor” will do.

Way too much detail. Some of these statements just don't say anything to the reader.

Confusing statements, such as “Jan 2007 to Present, Principal Consultant, Brain Trust Corporation, Richardson, TX, High Tech Sales & Marketing Consulting Company.” Does Rex still work for this firm? It appears he is still working there. How can that be? He has worked for two other people at the same time.

In reality, Rex hired himself out to the companies he worked for on a consulting basis. Admittedly, it is easier to explain short stops on one's résumé in this manner, but it isn't a good idea to do so. Companies do not want to hire someone as a full-time employee if he considers himself a consultant. “Consultant” communicates the idea that the candidate will leave and go to work for the highest bidder. As you will see, we did not include this title on his final résumé. Now, if Rex wants to have both a consulting-type résumé and a full-time employee type résumé, that's another matter.

A hiring authority would take one look at his nine-page résumé and almost certainly throw it away. So, we edited Rex's résumé down to two pages and here is what we came up with:
