The following story is based partially on events from my life. However, none of the characters are intended to represent actual people and the story is not told with any trace of malice or ill will. I believe that the purpose of stories is to bring people closer together and to help us deal with the events of our lives. I know some of what follows may be difficult for some readers and I ask simply that you stick with the story to the end. There is a lot of light, life and love in this story, as there is in my heart. Thank you for reading.

R
OSE STOOD IN FRONT OF
the window of the cabin and looked out at the valley. It was her first morning in Chazel. From her bedroom she could see across a vast swathe of black spruce and tamarack. There was a mist over the forest. A flock of white birds rose up from a lake that was hidden among the trees.

The place felt ethereal. It felt heavenly. It was almost too much. She couldn’t believe that in so short a time her life had changed from the hell she’d been living in at the Cat to this beautiful and peaceful place. She’d gone from being a sex slave and a prostitute to this! Could she really be so lucky?

The signs of spring were everywhere even if it was still pretty cool outside. This far north it took a long time for summer to take hold. Josh had made a fire in the morning before going out to the lake for a swim and the warmth of it was delicious. She hadn’t had much comfort in the last house she’d lived in, that terrible dump she’d been forced to share with Murdoch. This was a lot nicer. She could get used to it. She was almost afraid to let herself enjoy it in case it was all taken from her. She knew that could still happen but she refused to think about it.

For now, all she had to do was try to enjoy this. She’d been praying for two long years that someone would come and rescue her and it had happened. But she couldn’t fully believe it. She couldn’t fully trust it. She’d been so badly hurt in the past, so emotionally scarred, that it was hard to forget the pain. It was hard to trust this new reality.

She also knew she wasn’t completely safe yet. There was still so much danger in her life. She and Josh had to figure out what they were going to do about the DRMC, how they were going to steer clear of the most powerful and brutal MC in Quebec, but for now at least she was safe.

They’d come up to this remote little settlement of hunters and trappers and there was little chance of anyone finding them there. No one would think to look for them in this place. Josh’s old friend, Jac, had taken them in and it was probably the safest place in the whole country for them to be.

But still, she knew not to let her guard down. After what she’d just been through it would take Rose a very long time before she could ever truly feel safe anywhere.

And there was another thing that she worried about. Apart from the very real threat of the DRMC tracking them down and killing them, she also had to worry about the scars and wounds that she was carrying in her soul. The things that had happened to her during the past two years were unspeakable. They went far beyond what she ever would have imagined could happen to a woman. Not only had she been captured and forced against her will to work as a stripper, but she’d been raped. And not just once. She could still remember the faces of most of the DRMC members who’d ever abused her. She tried to remember each of them. But during the two hellish years she’d spent stripping at the Cat so many of them had had their way with her that she’d lost count. And that left scars. She couldn’t just walk away from a trauma like that. It wouldn’t be that simple and she knew it. She wondered how she could ever hope to heal from what had been done to her when she couldn’t even remember all of the men who’d done it.

It hadn’t even only been rape. There had been times when the things the DRMC had done to her had purposefully and carefully been designed to humiliate her, to break down her sense of self, her dignity and self-respect, and shatter any chance of happiness she would have in her future. That was the way the DRMC worked. That was the way they kept control of the girls they forced to dance. She’d seen first hand that it was also the way they kept control of their members.

She could still remember how she’d been forced to witness firsthand how they’d taught Patrice to be loyal. They’d wanted to show him what they expected of a member, the loyalty and obedience that was required. But they’d also wanted to break his spirit. That was back when she’d first been captured. Patrice had been guarding her. Somehow Serge found out that he liked her. So he forced Patrice to do such terrible things to her that he might never be able to see another woman in the same way ever again. The whole experience had been perfectly orchestrated to destroy both Rose and Patrice, to erase their humanity, to turn them into the submissive slaves that the DRMC wanted them to be.

And those were the memories that Rose carried with her now. She would carry them for the rest of her life and she knew it. No matter how far she ran from the DRMC, no matter how safe she felt with Josh, she would always have to carry with her the memory of what they’d done to her. She’d bear those scars for the rest of her life.

She just prayed they wouldn’t get in the way of her living her life. She prayed she’d be able to overcome her past and find happiness in the future. And she prayed Josh would stay with her while she figured it all out.

S
HE FINISHED GETTING READY AND
went out to the living room. It was a good-sized room with log walls and a big table in the center of it. A staircase on one side led up to the loft where Jac slept. At the back of the room was the kitchen. Rose went over to the stove and put some water on to boil.

It seemed like a peaceful place to live. There were none of the stresses of modern life. The community was in an unincorporated township which meant there were no by-laws, no property taxes, no local government, and no rules. You could live how you chose and that was exactly what Jac and a group of other men did up there. They lived off the land.

Early in the morning Jac had come knocking on their bedroom door. He wanted Josh to go swimming with him. Rose thought it was crazy. There was still ice on the lake. They had to dive into the water through a hole in the ice, like ice-fishing. It was crazy, but a part of her was relieved that Josh was getting up before her. She needed some time to herself.

Things had happened so fast between them. He’d come into town and rescued her, they’d escaped the Cat and scarcely a few hours later they’d had sex for the first time. She’d been caught up in the moment, they’d both been. She’d enjoyed it, she definitely wanted things to go farther with Josh, but she needed to slow down a little. If she was going to have any chance of getting over the experiences she’d been through, if she was going to be able to move forward with her life, she would have to slow things down and deal properly with the traumas of her past.

She wanted to heal. She wanted to be a good partner, a healthy woman, a healthy person, and for that she needed time. She needed to be able to catch her breath. She’d been forced to do so many sexual things for the DRMC, she’d been forced to strip and prostitute herself, and she didn’t want that to dictate the kind of person she was. She didn’t want it to define her.

She just needed a little time with Josh.

A
ND THEN, WHEN HE CAME
back into the cabin with Jac, his muscular body soaking with ice-cold water, all those thoughts went right out the window. She didn’t want to take things slow at all. She wanted him to take hold of her and have her, right there on the kitchen counter.

“Josh,” she said.

She felt her heart beating faster as she looked at him. He was so handsome, so sure of himself. He had a broad chest, defined abs, muscular arms. His blonde hair looked great wet, just long enough to touch his shoulders. He’d known her father. For ten years he’d been the sole surviving member of the Sioux Rangers. And he’d risked his life to rescue her. What more could she possibly want from a man? Why did she want to slow things down?

Was it just because she was scared?

*

“R
OSE,” JOSH SAID AND CAME UP
to her.

He took a hold of her and held her firmly but gently. She felt weightless in his arms. He lifted her from the ground for a second as he brought her up to his lips. She kissed him and it felt like kissing pure gold. His kiss was like honey. It gave her butterflies in her stomach. She’d fallen for him and there would be no pulling her back.

All her fears, all her thoughts for slowing down, all of it was based on her own insecurities. She knew that. Nothing he’d done had actually made her feel threatened or rushed. She just knew that if she didn’t get a handle on who she was now, and on what her limits were, she’d never be able to move forward from the position the DRMC had pushed her into.

She didn’t want to be a whore. She didn’t want to be a slut. She knew that wasn’t the way Josh saw her, that wasn’t the way he treated her, but she still felt uncertain about herself. After all the things she’d been forced to do for those other men, she wasn’t sure she was ready to dive right into a new relationship, even if she was already falling in love with Josh.
