Dharmapala, Anagarika
(1864–1933).
Sinhalese Buddhist reformer who laid foundations for the revival of Buddhism. He was born Don David Hewavitarne, but he renounced his European name in 1881 and took the name ‘Guardian of Truth’. In 1891, he founded the Maha Bodhi Society for the renaissance of Buddhism and for the rescue of Buddhist sites in India.
