(‘stew’). Traditionally a Jewish housewife would prepare cholent in advance and put it in the oven before the
Sabbath
began. It cooked slowly overnight and thus provided something hot to eat on Sabbath morning without breaking the Sabbath law against kindling a light or cooking.
