to those who enter the
Pure Land
. Raigo-in is the manual sign of welcome.
Rain
(Heb.,
geshem
). A recurrent theme in Jewish liturgy (see esp. the tractate
Ta‘anit
), perhaps reflecting the agricultural base of life in the biblical period. It was a mark of the
messiah's
connection with God that he would mediate rain to the land.
