of the 4th–5th cents., so-named from Priscillian, bishop of Avila in Spain. Priscillian was exiled for a time in 381, and executed for sorcery together with several of his adherents in 386. The Priscillianists taught a
modalist
doctrine of the Trinity and denied the pre-existence of Christ as well as his real humanity; they condemned marriage, the procreation of children, and eating meat. How much of this was taught by Priscillian himself is uncertain.
