Danny Deever
: The allusion is to Kipling's poem of the same name (
Rudyard Kipling's Verse
(New York: Doubleday, 1940), 395–6). Since ‘they're hangin' Danny Deever in the mornin',' the piano player's voice provides an apt accompaniment to Dick's social demise.

61
Languedoc peasant remedies
: Southern France. A play on ‘long dick', indicating that Tommy Barban is equipped to replace Dick, ‘the big stiff' (130), who goes limp in the water after failing to stand upright on the surf board (306).
