Sheldon held an empty plate in his hand. “Can I have cake now?"

He retrieved the empty plate and set it upon an end table before he bent down and hauled the boy into his arms. “You sure can. How big a piece do you want?"

"Big,” he yelled, throwing up his hands and catching Tracy's attention. She looked worried. The tension in her face eased slightly when Sheldon wrapped his little arms around Dolan's neck. There were a series of female,
ahhh's
, but the only one he cared about was Tracy's.

"Okay, buddy. Let's go."

In the kitchen he sat Sheldon on a chair and headed for a drawer to get a knife.

"Do you have a horse?” the child asked, watching him as he began to slice the cake. “Bigger."

"Are you sure you can eat a larger piece?"

He nodded. “Do you have a horse?"

Dolan slid the knife beneath the slice of cake and placed it on a plate along with a fork. “I do.” He set the dessert before the boy and he immediately picked up his fork and began to eat.

With his mouth full, he mumbled. “Auntie won't let me ride."

That was understandable, but this was a ranch. Tracy would need to get past her fears.

"Need some help?” Lois stood in the doorway. A soft expression fell across her face when she looked at her grandson.

"I think I've got it under control.” But he wasn't sure. He'd never been around children. This would be a new experience for him. Again, he tried to remind himself that Tracy had yet to agree to marry him.

"Do you love her?” He should have expected that question from Lois.

Not hesitating, he said, “Yes."

A troubled look furrowed her forehead. “She's been through so much and she has a lot of responsibility.” Her gaze went to Sheldon. “She can't afford to make a mistake."

"I understand,” he said. “Your daughter hasn't agreed to marry me."

"I know.” A smile brightened her eyes. “She will."

"How can you be so sure?” He held onto the woman's words with hope.

"She wouldn't be here if she didn't care about you.” She glanced again at Sheldon. The boy was covered in chocolate and still pushing the dessert into his mouth.

"You know that you're welcome to live with us."

"Thank you.” Lois dragged in a heavy breath. “Carl has asked me to stay as well. I think I might just take him up on his invitation. Maybe keep an eye on you.” She winked. “Now why don't you let me take care of this little heathen. It sounds like you have some work to do."

That was putting it lightly. As he wiped his hands on a towel, he figured tonight would be extremely interesting.

Chapter Twenty

Nothing lay between Dolan and Tracy but the night and words left unspoken. A dim light from the master bathroom bled into the room, casting shadows around his bedroom. She hugged up to her pillow, smelling his spicy cologne upon it.

How had things gotten so out of control?

In everyone's eyes she was as good as bound to the man who lay silently against her back. The warmth of his naked body radiated straight through the thin material of her slip, making it hard for her think. She closed her eyes and her mother's smiling face appeared. She had embraced the idea of her daughter's marriage, giving her blessings, while Caitlyn had even begun to make plans for the upcoming nuptials. Together, they had even settled on a date. It had been a chaotic moment, one that left Tracy's head buzzing.

She opened her eyes, staring across the room. She was glad when everyone had departed, except that left her and Dolan alone. Strangely, they had moved through the steps of getting ready for the evening and then climbed into bed without a word.

How ironic. They were already acting like a married couple with something wedged between them. Yet the question of marriage was the “something".

Excitement and fear made strange bedfellows.

He was everything she had ever wanted. Still she couldn't help but wonder if their love was a passing phase. Hell. They hadn't even known each other for what? Two weeks. What happened when their lust cooled? Would they still have something substantial to hold on to? Did they have enough between them to build forever upon? She couldn't make another mistake—not this time.

"Penny for your thoughts.” His smooth voice slid over her skin as his hand glided up her arm making goose bumps flare.

She licked her lips. “What are we going to do?"

He scooted back and rolled her upon her back. Cradling her face in his palms, he looked deep in her eyes. “Marry me."

A dark lock of hair fell upon his forehead. She couldn't help raising her hand and brushing it away. “We don't know each other."

"I know I've never felt this way about anyone. I crave every inch of you against my skin."

"That's lust, not love."

"Tracy, please.” He paused briefly. “I'm not good at expressing my feelings.” She heard him swallow hard. “Dammit, woman,” he breathed. “You mess with my head. You're in my dreams, my thoughts. I can't bear it when we're separated. Just the thought of another man touching you is like a knife in my gut.” There was so much emotion in his words, tears moistened her eyes. Gently he stroked her cheek with the back of his hand. “Can't you see that I love you?"

She needed to believe him.

While she struggled with the knowledge that the odds were against them, that love at first sight was as impossible as improbable, she wanted to take what he offered because she loved him too. Yet instead of expressing her love, letting him know that the feeling was mutual, she said, “Prove it."

"What?” There was almost a lost boy quality to his voice. “How? What can I do?"

Wrapping her arms around his neck, she pulled him close, their lips almost touching. “Make love to me.” Her body ached to feel him deep inside her.

"We can't—shouldn't.” Even as he spoke, she felt his cock harden and press against her leg. Her nipples beaded in response.

"I need you,” she admitted without shame. More than anything, she had to know the love they felt was real. Something that felt so perfect had to be right.

He pulled into a sitting position, forcing her to release her hold on his head. She felt his hands shake as he fisted them into her slip and began to raise the hem. Pushing the gown up her body, he revealed the thong she wore. His gaze was pinned on her as he continued to expose her breasts, up further until she was completely disposed of the garment. With a flick of his wrist he sent the satin floating on the air.

"Baby.” His breathy endearment discharged a firebolt between her thighs that traveled to her belly. He inched the thong down her hips and rays of sensation burst from her nipples to make her breasts throb, growing heavy.

"Dolan.” His name was a whisper on her lips as she reached for him.

He fell into her arms, wedging his knee between her legs as he eased his weight upon her. She felt the tremor that filtered through him. He captured her mouth. Feather-light, he kissed her with such tenderness that it humbled her to know how much he desired her.

"Mine,” he murmured against her lips.

"Forever,” she returned, eliciting a surprising growl from him, before he went perfectly still.

"Fuck,” he groaned.

What now? She was afraid to ask. His firm erection twitched against her damp folds. She couldn't bear the thought of something coming between them—not now.

"I—I want you so badly.” Another tremor assailed him. He tensed, every muscle clenching beneath her touch. “Don't know if I can be gentle or hold on for long."

Relief and love washed over her in waves. “Then let me take the reins, cowboy. Where's your slicker?"

"Slicker?"

"Condom.” She placed her palms on his chest, smooth skin and iron hardness, and then she pushed, rolling him off her and onto his back.

"In the top drawer of the bedstand."

Inching off the bed, she wasted no time retrieving the package. With her teeth she tore open the package, extracted the sheath and finally placed the paper inside the wastebasket. Crawling back upon the bed, she slinked toward him. As she circled her fingers around his cock, he growled. The deep raspy sound was so sexy she tightened her grip and stroked.

"Darlin'—"

"
Shhh
...” Carefully she slid the latex over his cock and then straddled him. Leaning forward to angle her hips, she positioned the tip of his cock to the opening of her body. With one thrust she impaled herself upon him.

"Oh God,” she cried out as he raised his hips and filled her completely.

Tiny sparks of heat thrummed through Dolan's body as her pussy slid over him like a glove. Warm. Wet. Tight. He prayed for strength to hold on as he grasped her narrow hips.

The slow, steady pace she began was so fuckin’ amazing it was all he could do not to explode. A shiver slid up his spine. He reached for her breasts needing something to focus on instead of the heat pounding in his groin.

As he pinched her nipples between his fingers, her mouth parted on a soft whimper. Yet it wasn't his touch that made her eyelids grow heavy. This position allowed for deeper penetration while her clit rubbed against his body, stimulating the organ.

Good for her—hell for him.

Each stroke teased the sensitive head of his cock, sending blood roaring toward his crotch. A thread of fire lanced down his erection. His breath hitched. “Easy, darlin'.” He was lucky just to get those words out. His voice was taut and coarse. His body a rocket ready to erupt.

His little redheaded vixen had other things in mind as she continued to ride him, holding his restraint in the palm of her hand.

"Feels. So. Good.” She angled her hips and pressed down hard against him.

Dolan's entire body twitched and then tensed. “Fuck,” he groaned, fighting the burn that made his toes feel like they actually curled. The edge of pain and pleasure caught him in its grasp. He couldn't hold on for much longer.

"Yes,” she hissed, picking up the rhythm. “God yes.” Her back arched. Her breathing came in short, quick pants to match his. The end was rushing in for both of them.

The second her inner muscles clamped down, milking him, it was all over. Lightning ripped down his cock, tearing a cry from his diaphragm. He grasped her hips, trying to control her, ease her bucking motion, but she was caught in the grips of her climax. Cherishing each of her small cries, he held on to her and together they rode the wave, their bodies locked in what could only be described as ecstasy.

As she collapsed upon him, he wrapped his arms around her and held on like he would never let her go. In the quiet that surrounded them, he could feel her heart beating, throbbing to the rhythm of his own.

A sense of calmness embodied him. The loneliness, emptiness he had experienced most of his life seemed to dissipate into thin air. He couldn't wait to fall asleep like this each night and wake each morning in her arms. Soon he would have a family—a real one consisting of a wife, a son, a mother-in-law, and in time perhaps a daughter with flaming red hair like her mother's. The thought brought tears to the surface. Moisture rolled down his cheek and he silently prayed she didn't see it.

Grappling with his emotion, he cleared his throat. “So when should we do this?”
The sooner the better
, he left that part unspoken.

Laughter burst from her lips as she raised her head. “Now that was really romantic."

Remorse slapped him in the face. “Shit. I'm sorry. It's just—"

She snuggled against him. “Maybe we should take it easy. Consider a lengthy engagement."

Disappointment hit him hard. He thought about it for the thump of a heartbeat. “Not gonna work."

She eased up out of his embrace. Rolling to her side, she asked, “Why?"

He leaned upon his side so that they faced each other. “Because I get the feeling you don't plan to move in with me until after we're married."

"It would be best for Sheldon."

"Then waiting won't work,” he said flatly. “Don't ask me to wait.” Dammit. He couldn't.

She rested her head on a palm. “What's your suggestion?"

Cord and Caitlyn had run off to Las Vegas and got hitched the next day. If it was up to Dolan they'd do the same. Yet he had seen the excitement in Tracy's mother's face and the dreamy expression Cait had when she talked about the wedding dress and ring.

Shit
. He hadn't even purchased her a ring. “I'm told it's all about the wedding dress and ring. Guess we could wait until you found the right dress."

She speared her fingers through his hair and drew him close. “You heard wrong.” Her lips were soft against his as she whispered, “It's all about the man. Fuck the wedding dress and ring. Been there—done that. How about Las Vegas?"

A mile-wide grin fell across his face. “Really?"

"Really. I don't need anything but you.” She eased upon her back. “Now, cowboy.” She stretched like a cat. With that sexy voice that always slid across his skin like silk, she said, “Take me again."

As Dolan crawled atop Tracy, he knew he had found the woman of his heart. No more lonely nights or unfilled dreams. Together they would be a family and make a house a home.

"Thank you,” he whispered.
