When her breathing returned to normal, he leaned back and removed his jeans and underwear. He kissed her knee and left a trail up her inner thigh, and then gently licked her cunt. She moaned and threaded her fingers through his hair, tugging on the short strands. Whether she wanted his tongue or his cock, she wasn’t sure, but she didn’t want him to stop touching her.

Jase continued moving up her body until his mouth met hers.

“The boots,” he said, giving her a chaste kiss.

“What?”

Every inch of her body tingled, and she felt as if she would die waiting for him to make love to her. She didn’t understand how he could be talking about boots, and his seemingly calm demeanor disappointed her. She knew she lacked experience, but she’d always hoped her mate would go crazy from her touch.

She tried to push him away, but he wouldn’t budge.

“Maybe this isn’t such a good idea,” she said, quietly.

“What? Why? Have you changed your mind?”

“No, but I’m going crazy waiting for you to do something and you’re talking about boots. It’s obvious I don’t turn you on.”

“Baby, I want you more than anything,” he said, kissing her gently. “I’m talking to distract myself from fucking you hard and fast. I don’t want to hurt you.”

“You won’t,” she said. “Please fuck me.”

He positioned himself at her opening and slowly slid inside her warmth.

“Fuck,” he groaned. “So tight, so perfect, so mine.”

This was what she wanted.

When he reached the barrier stopping his decent, he pulled back and thrust into her hard. Pain raced through her body and she cried out. Her claws extended and sank into his flesh, but he didn’t move. He stayed buried deep inside her core until the pain disappeared and her hunger returned.

“Okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” she nodded.

He smiled and moved in and out of her slowly, as her pussy stretched and molded around him. Fire raced across her skin and ignited every nerve ending. Her orgasm lingered just out of reach, and she wanted more.

She rubbed one hand over the back of his head, and pulled him down for a kiss.

“Oh shit!”

He pushed deep inside her core and stopped moving.

“What? What is it?” she asked, alarmed.

“Rub my head again,” he said.

She furrowed her brow, but complied. This time she moved her hand slower, and outlined the hidden scar. Jase trembled and pushed himself deeper. His cock throbbed wildly and he held himself rigid above her.

“Fuck,” he said through clenched teeth. “I’m sorry, baby, but I’m going to come.”

“Fuck me hard, Jase. Let the bear claim his mate.”

He pumped in and out of her wildly, and she reveled in his primal state. Another orgasm came without warning and she screamed and moaned with abandon. Her friend’s stories of sex had been tame in comparison, and she’d never expected to experience something so wild, crazy and perfect.

Sweat covered Jase’s brow, and she knew he still tried to hold back, even as her pussy contracted around him. His face shone with love, and she wanted him to bring him the same pleasure. She rubbed the back of his head a second time and his canines elongated.

“Bite me at the same time,” he said, his words garbled between human and bear.

She forced her canines to elongate and when he sank his teeth into her neck, she screamed and latched onto his shoulder.

A flash of light filled the room, and gold sparkles rained down on them, disappearing before reaching the bed. Jase’s soul seamed to reach out and wrap around hers, and for the first time in her life, she knew she was right where she belonged.

Chapter Five

Jase squinted as the afternoon light broke through the curtains and pulled him out of the deepest sleep he’d had in over a month. He turned toward his sleeping mate, tightened his arms around her, and smiled. Violet was everything he’d ever hoped for, and when the mating was complete, he knew he’d been right to trust his bear.

After their first time together, they made love again in the shower, and then cuddled and talked until they both drifted off to sleep as the sun began to rise.

They’d discussed everything from the patent leather boots he wanted her to wear while riding him, to the differences between their mating and those of others in the community.

He found out most males don’t bear mating marks, and Vi had never heard of a couple sharing a soul bond. Whether it was because he was a bear from far away, or because she was so unlike all the other shifters in town, he didn’t know. He was just glad they’d tried it.

Next to him, Violet stirred. She reached her arm up to stroke the back of his head, and his cock sprang to life. Before they’d fallen asleep, he’d told her about his phantom pains and what her touch did to him. Since then, she’d tried to test the theory more than once, but he’d stopped her every time. He hadn’t been as gentle as he’d hoped their first time, and he knew she needed time to heal.

Violet pushed him onto his back and crawled on top of him.

“Hi,” she said, smiling.

“Hi,” he said, planting a chaste kiss on her lips.

“I want you,” she said, kissing him harder.

She slid her tongue inside his mouth and he forgot why fucking her again so soon was a bad idea. He wrapped his arms around her and smoothed his hands down her curvy body. When he reached her ass, he grabbed one globe in each hand and positioned her over his cock.

Her slick entrance guided him inside, inch by inch, but her muffled hiss brought him back to reality. He pulled out of her channel and settled her around his waist. Her pout would have made him laugh if he hadn’t wanted her so bad.

“You’re still sore,” he reasoned.

“My mouth is fine,” she said, kissing a path down his chest, “and I’m starving.”

Her stomach took that moment to growl in protest, and they both laughed. He sat up and kissed her again, pulling her back up beside him.

“You’re hungry and your brother is waiting to bring us lunch,” he said between kisses. “Get your cell-phone and text him.”

“Aww…you take away all my fun,” she said, mock pouting.

“After we eat, you can suck me anytime you want,” he said, teasing.

He meant it, she could touch him whenever she wanted, and he relished the thought. He had a feeling his insatiable mate was about to make up for lost time.

“Mmm…I can’t wait,” she said, teasing him right back and rolling off the bed.

She disappeared into the living room and came back with both their cell-phones.

“Your phone made a noise, so I brought it with me,” she said, her smile gone. “It looks like you have a lot of text messages.”

He clicked on his phone and several alerts filled the screen. Logan, Mason and Jacob must have gotten their days mixed up because all three had texted him both last night and this morning.

“They’re all from my old team,” he said, showing her the screen. “It looks like everyone is doing double duty on the texts because I didn’t check in last night.”

“Wow, you weren’t kidding,” she said, handing him back the phone. “How long will they keep it up?”

“Probably until we go back to get my stuff.”

“Well, then we’d better make a plan.”

“You read my mind,” he said, leaning in for a kiss. “For now, I’ll send Logan an update.”

They both started texting, but Vi finished in seconds.

In a small town of hybrid shifters called Deals Gap. I met my mate, and I’m staying. Will clean out my apartment soon. I’ll keep you posted…

He pressed send and waited for Logan’s response.

You met your mate? Really?

He knew the man wouldn’t believe him.

Yes. Her name is Violet, and she’s a wolf hybrid. I think her brother may be an asset to the team. Got to go, I’ll text you in a few days.

“Do you really think Tobias will fit in there?” she asked.

“Yeah, I do,” he said. “I got the impression he’s ready to settle down, and they could use someone with his skills.”

“That would be wonderful,” she smiled. “Deals Gap has never been a good fit for him.”

“We’d better get dressed. Tobias will be here sooner than later.”

A few minutes later, the smell of hamburgers, fries and fresh donuts lured them out of the bedroom. Tobias stood by the table and unloaded the bags from the diner and
Sweet Retreat
.

“Does he always sneak around like this?” Jase asked.

He was surprised Vi seemed unaffected by her brother’s stealth mode.

“Yes,” she said, laughing. “He’s been doing it since we were kids. He’s even gone toe-to-toe with white cougars and won.”

“White cougars?”

“Rare, genetically altered assassins; bred and trained to kill,” she explained. “Niki, the woman who blocked me in the bakery yesterday, is the only one I’ve ever met.”

“There are not that many in existence,” Tobias added, “but they’re really fast, and usually deadly.”

Jase nodded and made a mental note not to cross Niki.

Lunch was full of laughter and easy conversation. He respected Tobias’ love for his sister, and was grateful the man had accepted him so easily. When their take-out boxes were empty, Jase got down to business.

“What did you find out?” he asked.

Tobias nodded and smiled in approval.

“His name is Drake, and he’s a Blackwood,” Tobias explained. “They’re kind of a rogue pack of wolves that didn’t want to follow the rules of the wolf clan or the neutral zone. They’ve taken a doctor, and they tried to take Sienna before she and Gage mated, but this isn’t about a kidnapping. Drake’s pissed and he wants what he thinks he’s owed.”

“You’re kidding?” Violet gasped. “All we did was dance.”

“And then you led him into a fight with a bear, and he ran away with his tail between his legs,” Tobias reminded her. “He’s too stupid to keep his mouth shut, so now people know, and he wants revenge.”

“Okay,” Jase said. “So we have to go to the Dark Moon tonight. Dean said there’s a pool tournament, so the place will be packed.”

“The bigger the crowd, the bigger the respect when you kick his ass,” Tobias agreed. “I’ll stop in early and get Gage, Dean, Nikki and Greer up to speed.”

“Wait,” Vi said, holding out her hands. “Am I about to be bait?”

“Yes,” Jase said. “Is that okay? Do you trust me?”

He hated the fact that his whole world seemed to depend on her response.

“More than anything,” she answered without hesitation.

He slid his hand into her hair, leaned forward her and pulled her to him. Their lips met in a hard, fierce, possessive kiss and his cock hardened to the point of pain. Violet stood, straddled his lap, and ground her hips against him.

“Well, that’s my cue to go,” Tobias said. “I brought your stuff in case you need anything, and the lock is on the coffee table.”

“Thanks man,” Jase said. “We’ll see you tonight around ten.”

“Don’t be too late,” her brother laughed.

“Wait,” Vi yelled, “take the donuts.”

“No way,” Jase said. “They smell amazing.”

“But…”

The look on her face nearly broke his heart.

“I’m leaving them,” Tobias said. “Good luck, Jase.”

***

Violet looked around the Dark Moon and tried to steady her nerves. Jase placed his hand on the small of her back and guided her to the bar. His touch settled her and her heartbeat slowed. To everyone else, she might be a freak, but his opinion was the only one that mattered.

After Tobias left, she found out just how much he loved her curves.

“What’s the deal with the donuts?” he’d asked.

“I don’t eat them.”

“Why?”

“Because…,” she’d said, bowing her head.

She’d wished the floor would open up and swallow her whole, but Jase was her mate now, and he’d find out sooner or later.

Once again, he’d surprised her.

“If you really don’t want one, it’s fine,” he’d said, “but if you’re holding back to punish yourself for your beautiful curves, then that’s not okay. I have a feeling it’s the latter.”

“I’m f—”

“Beautiful,” he’d said, “and I love all of your curves.”

In the end, they’d made a deal that he would cut back on the sweets and she would indulge a little more often. Then they’d shared a donut and her moans of pleasure from the sweet treat caused Jase to pick her up, carry her to the bedroom and show her exactly how much he loved every inch of her.

“I know what you’re thinking about,” he whispered, licking the shell of her ear. “Stop it, and concentrate.”

She reached up and traced the scar on the back of his head, and then laughed when a growl vibrated through his chest.

“When this is all over, you’ll pay for that,” he promised.

“I can’t wait.”

She winked at him and focused on the plan.

Earlier, after Jase had kissed and licked every inch of her skin until she screamed his name, he’d given her a refresher course of the self-defense Tobias had taught her, just in case. Then they’d gone shopping for boots.

The cute, light-weight, reinforced steel-toe, patent leather knee-hi boots didn’t look threatening, but thankfully, looks were deceiving. If the whole plan went wrong, she had two weapons to aid in her escape.

Nothing will go wrong.

The worlds filtered through her head, not as a wish, but as a conviction. She knew Jase would do anything to keep her safe.

“There’s a Blackwood,” Gage whispered, placing a bottle on the counter.

Jase nodded and took a drink of the cold brew. Two minutes later, Tobias joined them at the bar.

“Including that guy, there’s seven. Drake is at the backdoor.”

“Okay, beautiful,” he said, kissing her lips. “Time to go to the restroom.”

If he had any phantom pains, or any doubts in their plan, he hid them well. She mouthed the words,
I love you
, and proceeded to the back of the bar.

As they’d expected, the Blackwood inside followed her, grabbed her bicep and pushed her out the rear door.

“Oh look, the fatty has come to join us,” Drake said.

The man holding her arm laughed and pushed her toward her attacker, and Drake spun her around and slammed her against the hood of his car.

“I’m disappointed you didn’t wear another skirt,” he said, digging his fingers into her hips and grinding his cock against her ass. “I prefer easy access.”

“Fuck you,” she yelled over her shoulder.

“I intend to,” he said, “and this time Sam is going to help me make sure you don’t get away.”

“Let her go, Blackwood.”

The bear’s growl filled the parking lot, and Drake cursed. Vi looked over to see Jase flanked by Gage and Dean.

“This parking lot is surrounded,” Drake said. “The three of you don’t stand a chance.”

“Not anymore,” Tobias said, stepping out of the darkness behind Drake.

“Only one left,” Niki said from behind Sam.

Niki had one hand on Sam’s forehead, holding his head back, and the other held a knife to his throat. Even though he was taller and more muscular, everyone knew she’d slice his jugular if he made one wrong move.

“Niki,” Dean protested.

“Oh please, Dean,” Niki said, rolling her glowing blue eyes. “It’s not like I’ve never done this before.”

“She’s mine,” Drake yelled hysterically.

He sounded like an unhappy toddler, and Vi expected him to throw himself on the floor any minute.

“Actually, she’s mine,” Jase said calmly. “I’ve claimed her, she bears my mark, and if you don’t step the fuck away, I’ll exercise my right to kill you and your friend.”

Drake stepped back and unpinned her from the car, proving he wasn’t completely stupid.

“This isn’t over,
bear
,” he sneered.

“Yes, it is,” Jase said.

“Don’t come back here again,” Dean warned. “If I see either one of you anywhere near the neutral zone, you’re dead, and be prepared for a visit from Bhric when he returns.”

“Fuck Bhric,” Drake swore.

“What was that?” Dean asked.

“Nothing. Get in the car Sam.”

Both men moved toward the doors of the SUV and Violet ran to Jase. He slid his arm around her waist, but waited for the car to leave before he embraced her fully. His lips crushed hers in a kiss that expressed everything they couldn’t say with an audience.
