You would be welcome to live among us, if you wished, or to travel our land.” I waited for Miriel’s polite demurral, but saw her looking about herself, at the glimpses of rolling hills and clear blue sky, and saw that she, too, had realized that we had no home, no place to call our own.

She looked over at
me, a question in her eyes, and I caught my breath. In all my days spent waiting, and grieving, I had not been able to touch the memories of Temar. But now the breath of the wind, the green of the land, seemed an invitation. It was a last gift.
