Rhee breathed deeply as a cab pulled up to her. Her eyes flicked over the strand of shiny brown beads that hung from the rear view mirror and the aloha print seat covers.

“Where to, miss?”

Rhee really had no idea where to go, but she didn’t want to come across like a naïve kid.
Not anymore!
But, her last-minute decision to run had not afforded her any time to consider things like where to stay. “Um, is there a small motel around here? Somewhere quiet?” The cab driver was an older man. He had a kindly expression on his face, and right off the bat, Rhee felt like he could be trusted.

“There are several, Miss….?”

“Um, Jeffries. Sabrina Jeffries.” Her new name sounded awkward rolling off of her tongue.

The cabbie, Max, took one look at the young girl and was reminded of his own daughter, who was off at college on the mainland. The automatic surge of protectiveness he felt for the pretty young stranger was a little surprising, but Max had learned long ago to trust his gut.

“Well then, Miss Jeffries, how does a private bungalow just steps from the beach sound?”

“If it’s in my price range, it sounds heavenly.”

“Well, you seem like a nice girl, so I’ll let you in on the island’s best kept little secret. If you plan to stay for a while, my sister has a nice little cottage that’s available, kind of secluded. It’s not that far from town, if you don’t mind taking the bus.”

Trusting Max had been a grand idea, Rhee mused as she turned the small brass key over in her hand. The cottage was a little dusty, but with some elbow grease, the two-bedroom back house was perfect.
More than I could have dreamed for.
As she stared at the vast expanse of aquamarine water and yellow sand, Rhee adjusted her thought as her hand came to rest low on her belly, exploring the light fluttering that had started there.
