“No,” Taylor said emphatically. “He’s the last person I want to see right now.”

“Did you have a fight?”

Taylor sniffled. “I’m starting my period. He’s so sure that I’m pregnant, he’s going to be so disappointed.”

“What makes you think you’re starting your period?” Holly asked, her brow wrinkling.

“I found blood in my underwear this morning,” Taylor said, putting her head in her hands. “Which is another thing that sucks. What am I even supposed to do about my period out here? Am I supposed to cut up my curtains to use as pads?”

Holly’s pats turned into a hard smack on her shoulder.

“Quit whining. You’re not starting your period, you moron.”

Taylor looked up at her. “I’m not?”

“No, you’re pregnant.”

“I am?”

Holly tapped her nose. “It’s pretty faint, but yeah. I smelled it as soon as I saw you. Thought it made sense, why you’ve been so damn hormonal.”

Taylor slumped in disbelief. “Then why was I bleeding?”

“Fuck if I know,” Holly said with a shrug. “You may want to talk to Cammie about it.”

Taylor nodded absently.
Pregnant. I’m pregnant.

Holly tapped her thigh. “Hey. You want me to go get Alder for you?”

Still in a daze, she said, “Yeah, and H—”

“What?”

Taylor shook her head. “Never mind.”

Holly said something else before leaving, but Taylor wasn’t listening. She lay back on the porch and stared up at the afternoon sky. Resting a hand on her abdomen, she tried to focus on how happy Alder was going to be. For whatever reason, her mind kept drifting elsewhere.

I’m not in love with Hale.

I’m not in love with Hale.

I’m not in love with Hale.

“Honestly.”

Putting Hale in her past isn’t easy for Taylor—especially when he’s determined to be part of her future.
