“BARCHANO!” shouts Garrett.

“What the FUCK?!… who ARE you anyway?!”

“Mr.
Barchano, don’t you remember me?! 20 years ago, you took my family from me! Barchano
then pulls a small concealed pistol out of his coat pocket and waits for Garrett to move in closer, as Garrett continues to loudly condemn Barchano’s actions.

“You conspired with the Mayor Mr.
Barchano, and murdered my family to keep me from exposing you and your two bit scum-bag operation!”

“Yes, yes… now I remember you!” answered
Barchano with a piercing sting over the sound of gunfire, trying to goad Garrett into getting closer to him. “That was never my idea; it was the Mayor’s plan the whole time… I had no choice, you must believe me!”

“You always have a choice Mr.
Barchano, and you, you fucking evil bastard, made the wrong one! You must have known that this day would come…. You will now pay for all your past transgressions Barchano! Today is the day of your deliverance into hell!”

As Garrett inched his way closer to
Barchano, his gun held steady and straight, pointed directly where he could see Barchano’s moonlit shadow protruding from behind the container he cowardly hid behind,… Barchano decided to make a move. His arm abruptly whipped from around the side container, rapidly firing in the general direction of Garrett, missing horribly, causing Garrett to instinctively jump to his right, further exposing Barchano to Garrett’s powerful weapon.

Standing very still for what seemed like an eternity, staring intensely at one another,

With steel in his eyes, Garrett did not flinch, and unloaded four straight shots into Barchano’s chest. Barchano fell helplessly to the ground, trying to speak one last time, looking intently at Garrett. While desperately gurgling imperceptible sounds, Garrett slowly put his gun to Barchano’s head, watching him suffer in pain. But instead of pulling the trigger, he jerked his gun back and holstered it inside his jacket, content to watch Barchano choke and struggle to locate his gun while slowly dying. It was a scene that Garrett imagined thousands of times after finding out it was Barchano that was responsible for his family’s death. Now it was done, he thought, this chapter of his life that so completely consumed him can finally be closed. As Barchano gasped for his final breaths, Garrett realized that he lost himself in the battle for redemption, and selfishly forgot about Bobby and his safety.

Looking over his shoulder, he sees that the gunfire had quieted, with
Barchano’s remaining men retreating into their limousines. Stagnoli unceremoniously dropped Bobby onto the ground as he began to pull away, yelling from his open window.

“Sorry about your nephew old boy… but I have to say, that was some excellent shooting on your part. Remind me to send you a bonus for killing off that piece of shit. It’s good to know that I don’t have to worry about
Barchano and his merry men anymore, a big thorn out of my ass… oh, and I’m sure you had nothing to do with this Garrett. But if I do find out you did, well, not even faking your girlfriend’s death will help you!”

Garrett was shocked at
Stagnoli’s proclamation, confused by what he might have figured out… but knew Stagnoli had little chance to get away, since Liliana and Derek were instructed to call friends of his down at the local precinct before anyone was to escape. But before Garrett could confirm the call was made, he saw Bobby grimacing and clawing at the ground in horrific pain, accidentally shot during the gun battle when Stagnoli used him as his personal armor.

“Bobby… Bobby
!... are you okay?!” Garrett cried out, while crouching down to check his bleeding Nephew.

“Of course Garrett, how could I not… we got all the bad guys, right?” winced Bobby, bleeding from multiple gunshot wounds.

“Yes we did Bobby, mostly because you did such a great job. Where were you hit?”

“Oh, it’s just a grazing wound Garrett, not to worry,” answered Bobby in a soft whisper, grimacing in tremendous pain.

“Graze my ass!… looks like you were shot three times Bobby, two in the side and once in the shoulder. There’s a lot of blood, but I’m sure you’re going to be fine son. Let’s get you the hell outta here!”

Before Garrett could reach for his phone, he notices a car speeding wildly in his direction. As the car skidded and stopped parallel to where Garrett and Bobby were positioned, the door fiercely swung open, revealing a very concerned
Liliana, with Derek at the wheel.

“Garrett! We heard the guns, and then, well, everything happened so fast… are you okay?!” asked a frantic
Liliana.

“Everything’s fine, but we need to get Bobby to a hospital, and quickly! Derek, did you call the precinct?”

“Got it done Garrett, they should be meeting up with Stagnoli as we speak. Should be a nice surprise for him!”

“Garrett, I saw you disappear into the shadows after drawing your weapon, what happened back there?” asked
Liliana, still in shock from the deadly course of events.

“I ended 20 years of frustration,” answered Garrett calmly.

“You did what?… you mean; did you…?”

“He’s over there, behind the container.”

“Garrett, we need to get you and Bobby out of here. We need to let the detectives come to their own obvious conclusion… that Stagnoli killed Barchano, not you!” ordered Derek.

“You’re right. Get everyone into the
limo, I’ll follow you over to the hospital.”

“Let me drive you Garrett… you look a little shaken,” offers
Liliana.

“No! You need to hold the compress tight to Bobby’s chest! You can’t let him bleed out
Lili, understand?!”

“I understand. Everything’s going to be okay Garrett, we have this!” insisted
Liliana.

“Alright, alright, good!
Now, let’s get the fuck outta here!”

Garrett said a silent prayer for Bobby as both cars sped off to Saint James Hospital, with Derek leading the way. This could not be happening all over again, thought Garrett. Another family member taken by
Barchano’s gang! How could he let it get out of hand? Just when Bobby looked to be turning his life around. He had to be alright, insisted Garrett, there was no other outcome that was acceptable.

Chapter III

After pulling up to the hospital, Garrett rushed out to help Derek carry Bobby into the emergency room. The tight compress that
Liliana held against Bobby’s chest was soaked with blood, as was Liliana’s skirt. Once they settled Bobby into emergency, Liliana decided to change out of her blood stained outfit, as the hospital staff supplied her with a pair of blue scrubs. Time seemed to have stood still for all three as they awaited word from the doctors. Liliana held Garrett’s hand while patiently sitting very still and quiet. Although it seemed like an eternity, less than 30 minutes had passed when two ER doctors approached Garrett and Liliana about Bobby’s condition. The diagnosis was positive, all three bullets missed vital organs and main arteries.

“Your friend lost quite a bit of blood, but from all indications, he should recover without any major issues. He’s a very lucky man, with a strong spirit,” stated a pleased ER surgeon. Garrett thanked the doctors, sinking down into his chair with a wave of relief flowing through him.

With police officers swarming the hospital, Garrett spent a short period of time detailing the accounts of the evening’s events. Many of the first responders knew Garrett very well, aware of his strong reputation with law enforcement. So without delay, all three were released from any further questioning, satisfied that they all were working in concert with detectives from the local precinct.

“Derek, I want to thank you for watching over
Lili,” said a reserved Garrett.

“She did pretty well on her own really, I just acted as backup,” replied Derek with a dry laugh.

“Either way, you did a great job. Why don’t you take her back to the hotel and I’ll meet up with you both later on.”

“How about I just show you a few covert ops back at the hotel instead?” kidded a relieved

Garrett was not especially in the mood for celebrating, knowing that Bobby was just beginning to recover from fatally close gunshot wounds. But

“Why don’t you two go back to the hotel
together. I’ll stay here at the hospital and call if there’s any change in Bobby’s condition,” offered Derek.

After speaking to the doctors one last time, satisfied that Bobby was out of danger, and in good hands, Garrett and
