“Shut up, Jase.” Grabbing the towel from the bench against the wall, I swipe it down my face to dry the sweat. “You’re a dickhead.”

“Yeah, yeah. Tell me something I don’t already know.” He laughs and claps me on my back. “I need to work out. I’ll catch you in a bit.”

“Whatever,” I say to his back as he walks toward the changing rooms, his bag slung over his back. I shake my head and decide a break is probably for the best.

Walking back to my office, I grab a bottle of water from my mini fridge and suck the bottle dry. The wet trail is cold as it flows down my throat, pouring into a cool pool in my stomach. What I really need is a fucking beer. If you had a sister like mine, you’d understand fully to why I’m in such a shitty mood. No one gets me angrier than she does.

Plopping into my office chair, I lean my head back and sigh. She used to be this sweet little thing when she was a kid. I’m twenty-five and she’s eighteen, the seven-year gap was probably a stupid idea on my mum’s part. We’ve never been close and never will be but it doesn’t stop her from being up my arse every damn week about some sort of shit she’s gotten herself into.

A commotion outside my office door has me rising from the cushiony comforts of the chair. Swinging my door open, I’m confronted with not only my sister but my mother too. This should be fucking fun.

“What are you both doing here?” I ask, crossing my arms across my chest. Mum did a good job with raising me but now she’s married to some rich twat, and only bothers with me when he’s not commanding her to do some shit for her, or so she usually tells me but she’s as manipulative as they come. My sister is a stuck up bitch in designer clothes, a Gucci bag swinging from her arm and giving a look of contempt at our mother. Though my sister takes after our mum in many ways, she still despises her as much as I do, but that’s where our similarities end.

“Ask mother dearest,” my sister sneers, eyes narrowing at mother and her perfectly, paint coloured lip curls back. “She fucking dragged me here!”

“Talk, mum, or leave.” Standing with my feet shoulder width apart and my arms crossed against my chest, I look every bit as intimidating as I intend to be. “Times ticking.”

“She…” Mother points in Tatiana’s face. “She is sleeping with Thomas Heartington.”

“Yeah, I have no idea who that is and I have no idea why that shit is my problem.” I scowl at them both as they continue to struggle against each other. “You two are acting like fuckin’ kids and it’s embarrassing!”

They stop pushing and shoving and stare at me in shock. However much we don’t get on, I never raise my voice to them, never speak back because to be honest, I don’t have the energy for their pathetic little lives. I have my own to run.

“You either tell me why you’re really here or get the fuck out of my gym!” I bellow into the room. They pull away from each other and Tatiana pouts, crossing her arms under her breasts as she perches on the end of the sofa in my office.

“Do you not know who Thomas is?” Mother asks me, a look on her face to say that I should in fact know who she’s on about. But the name doesn’t register, nor am I entirely bothered. I don’t give a fuck who she sleeps with as long as it’s none of my friends, but they know she’s off limits. She’s a grade-A clinger and a pain in everyone’s arses.

“No. Should I?” I blow out a breath as frustration prickles against my skin. “Can you spit it out already? I have shit to do today.”

“That’s Frankie’s son from his previous marriage!” She cries out, arms flailing in the air. She’s so melodramatic about everything that it’s cringey.

“Frankie…as in your husband Frankie?” She nods at me and I turn my attention to Tatiana who’s now looking at her feet as they shuffle on the carpet in her Louboutin’s. “Your fucking step brother, Tat? Seriously?”

“He’s only my step brother for fuck sake. Not blood related and he’s hot. Plus, he was just a one-time hook-up, a bit of fun. You should try it sometime, Roofie. You’re so uptight it’s unreal.” Her eyes narrow at my face, lip curled back as if she’s disgusted with what she sees.

“I may be uptight, but at least I’m not a slut,” I hiss at her. “You disgust me.”

“I’m not on this earth to impress you, big brother. Remember that.” She lifts her chin and looks down her nose at me as her eyes rake me up and down, contempt clear on her face. The feeling is fucking mutual I can tell you that.

“Grow up, Tatiana.” Shaking my head, I turn my attention back to mother. “If you could just keep her on a leash, you might have a better way of controlling her…or, she gets her lack of self-respect from you not being able to keep your legs closed for years. You can look at me in shock all you want,
mother,
but you don’t even know who my father is. Now, I suggest you both take your arses out of my gym before I grab security.”

Tatiana smirks at me as she stands. “Are they fit?” I grab her arm and drag her through the door and down the long corridor to main reception.

“Marco!” Marco is one of the biggest fucking dudes I know. He’s made out of complete muscle and he’s six-foot two-inches tall. Shorter than Beast, but has more muscles. “Come escort these ladies out please. If you can call sluts ladies these days.”

My sister’s face drops as she eyes Marco coming towards us. “Bro, he’s fucking scary.”

“Good. Now fuck off.” I push her a little toward Marco and my mother follows closely behind. At the main glass doors, she turns and faces me, saying, “You should have more respect for me. I’m the one that brought you up, I’m the one that gave you the money to buy this dump. I didn’t bring you up to be the bastard that you are.”

That stung. It’s her fault I didn’t have a father. She couldn’t remember what bloke she slept with on the night I was conceived and she never bothered to figure it out. “You don’t need a daddy when you’ll always have me,” this is what she said when I was young boy who cried about his daddy. Yeah, she certainly kept her word didn’t she. Fuck her and fuck my sister. They can rot in the deep pits of hell for all I fucking care. What she keeps forgetting is that I paid her the money back after I started profiting from the gym. She wasn’t even grateful, snatched the check out of my hand and stormed off. When she’s in a mood, you can’t beat down the walls she built to protect herself. And I don’t give flying pigs arse anyway.

Once the doors are shut behind them, I sag against the reception counter and breathed a sigh of relief that they were gone. At fucking last.

“Roofie, you okay?” Regina, who mans the reception desk, asks timidly. “Do you need some water?”

“No, thank you. I just want to be left alone.” I walk back to my office with a scowl etched on my face. I must look ready to kill someone as everyone I pass makes a wide birth to let me through. I don’t bother saying hi to my clients. I keep my eyes trained on the floor.

Reaching the emergency exit, I throw my weight on the bar of the door ‘til it swings open and smashes against the brick wall outside. I step out, heaving in lungsful of fresh air. The anxiety that makes me sweat is nothing new to me, encounters with my family make this shit happen. If I could cut them from my life completely, that would be pretty fucking awesome. But my sister refuses to leave me alone, and as for mother? Ugh. I just wish she didn’t change into the person she is today. I want the woman who cuddled me when I was younger, who soothed me when I was bullied at little school. I want the woman who brought me up, but that will never happen. She’s every bit the gold digger that she is. From the designer clothes, to the botox and the lip fattening shit that she did to make herself look like a fish. She disgusts me.

I lean against the brick wall, trying desperately to control my breathing. My sweat cooling on my skin against the brisk breeze has me shivering. I rub my hands down my arms and close my eyes, leaning my head back to rest against the building. My sister is every bit like our mother, bratty, pathetic and down-right disgusting. Sleeping with her step brother? Fuck me, I knew she was a slut but that’s taking it up another level.

“Mate?” Jase steps out and stands in front me, his eyes searching mine. “What happened?”

“Oh, you know my mother and sister. Forever causing shit and involving me in their muck.” I shake my head from side to side and tease my tongue bar across my lips. “Tatiana slept with our step brother.”

Jase blanches and his lips curl back in disgust. “That’s pretty fucked up even for her.”

Jase and Beast are the only people who know everything about me. They know how fucked up I am and how screwed up my family is. But this is a new level of weird to come into my life and I wish to fucking God that I never had those images shoved into my head. I hang my head and cross my arms. “Sometimes it would be so much fucking better if they just didn’t exist. Does that make me a bad person?”

“No. Not when your family are a bunch of dickheads.” Jase throws his head back and sighs. “You always have us, mate. Beast and I. We’re the only family you need.”

“I know, Jase. I know.” Shaking off the melancholy that’s wrapped itself around me, I straighten up and head back inside. I have paperwork to sort out, surely that would keep my mind busy?

“Jesus Christ, woman!” I shout, throwing my arms in the air. “I do not need to know how good Beast is in bed, or how big his dick is. I am going through a drought right now, you know! I have cobwebs and shit down there.”

“Oh stop it. How many times have I had to sit here and cringe whilst listening to your romping tales?” She takes a sip of her wine and raises a brow at me. “Yours were so much more graphic, may I add.”

I pretend to look like I’m deep in thought and had to concede. It’s true. I talked to her about every sexual encounter I had whilst she wasn’t getting any. I guess it’s only fair that I listen to hers. “But I see Beast all the time and I don’t want to picture the big brute naked. No, nuh uh.”

Carlotta throws her head back, laughing so loud that the patrons of the restaurant we’re in turn their heads to scowl at us. I poke my tongue out at them, mature I know.

“Sorry, but that was pretty fucking comical. You never cease to amaze me with what comes out of your gob.” Carlotta is still laughing, but quieter this time. I glare at her. Like, serious death glare. “Okay, okay. We’ll change the subject.”

“As long as the topic stays off a certain knobhead, then yeah, lets.” She knows who I’m talking about because for a few months now I’ve avoided any kind of conversation about him. Tried to, anyway. Carlotta is convinced I’m pining after him but she couldn’t be any further from the truth. The way he spoke to me after we hooked up will be forever etched into my head. Dickhead, douchebag and he’s so many other fucking things too.

“Gem, you really need to pull your head out your arse because you’ll be seeing him around a lot once I’ve moved into Beast’s.” Carlotta sighs and shakes her slightly.

“So you’re definitely moving in with him? That’s a big step, Car. You have only been together…what, a month?” I’m concerned that once she moves in with him, their relationship will shatter. Though you can tell the level of love and passion they have for each other, it will change once they’re under each other’s feet day in day out. And Beast loves routine…he’s going to have a heart attack once he sees how many shoes Carlotta owns. That thought makes me chuckle.

“Yes, I’m sure. I love him and he’s it for me.” She eyes me wearily. “What’s so funny?”

“Does the poor guy know about your shoe collection?” I snort and cover my mouth to try and hold in the bubbles of laughter trying to escape. Her face is a picture perfect moment and it’s a shame I’m too fucking lazy to dig my phone out of my bag. “I guess not.”

“He won’t care. He has a walk in wardrobe ready for me, and there’s plenty of space for my shoes, thank you very much.” I’m not sure who’s she trying convince, me or herself. “Anyway, you haven’t seen the amount of ties and watches the guy owns. Like seriously? How many Rolex’s does a man need?”

“Oh, shut up, Car. Soon, you’ll be swaggering around in bling bling just to match him.” I wink at her and before she gets to reply our food arrives. “Thanks, Gina.”

“You’re welcome, ladies. Remember, you never have to pay here so don’t bother asking for the bill. Carlotta is my future daughter-in-law after all.” She winks at us before sauntering off back to the bar.
