It was dark–only a single
candle burning in the far corner of the room, casting unnatural
shadows about. Elijah continued into the room and the door closed
behind him. He stood fearful and felt dull-witted at what to
expect. The room was relatively empty and much neater than the rest
of the house. Its décor was very modern; the walls were painted
charcoal and the odd pieces of furniture were a crisp white. A
large square table with pewter legs and glass top sat in the center
of the room. Strewn across it were various pieces of occult
paraphernalia. Elijah’s eyes scanned the room for someone, but he
saw no one. He spun on his heels and reached for the doorknob only
to find the door had been locked.

“Hey!” he bellowed, “What
the hell is going on here?”

All of a sudden, the
distinct sound of fabric rustling reached his ears and he turned
swiftly to see who was behind him. As though he were made of
shadow, the man seemed to materialize out of nothing. Elijah was
speechless watching him. He was an alluring man who stood just
under six feet, with cropped, dark brown hair and crystal blue
eyes. He had a strong jaw line, full lips and a long slender nose.
His skin was translucent and spidery purple-blue veins were visible
as they wound their way throughout his body. He was dressed simply
in a white suit and dress shirt with the first two buttons
undone.

“You must be Adam?” Elijah
asked, taking a step forward. He scanned every inch of this man,
silently questioning his intentions.

“I am,” he answered. His
voice was deep and rich, with no discernible accent. “I am glad
that you decided to see me. I had almost forgotten how beautiful
you are.” Adam smirked and walked closer to him.

Elijah’s eyes narrowed as
his mind raced with questions.

“I can see you have many
questions, why don’t you ask them?” Adam said in a monotone
voice.

Elijah took a moment,
uncertain if he should proceed. “How do you know me? I do not know
you.”

Adam
laughed heartily. “Oh, you know me. I am very hard to be rid
of–think
really
hard.”

Elijah stood there,
silently gawking at this man. Suddenly the answer became blatantly
obvious.

“My Lord! My sire. The
Blood God?” He lowered his head for a moment then returned his gaze
to Adam’s cold eyes. “How can that be?”

Adam stepped even closer to
Elijah, eventually standing just inches away from him. Adam’s eyes
seemed to sparkle as he gazed at him with a tender wrath. Elijah
was speechless. With a sigh, Adam continued.

“Oh, dear boy… must I
explain everything?” He paused for a moment. Elijah glared at
him.

“First off, if I had known
that your brother, sister and you felt such distain for me, I would
have been rid of you before you could even blink an eye. But alas,
I did not and I will accept my ignorance and move on.

“However, as I lay in
torpor within my prison–that stone sarcophagus that Eme, Ezra and
you had put me into–my rage grew towards the lot of you.” Adam
paused, backed away from Elijah and began to pace as he continued
talking.

“I knew
when you had embraced a human–as I did with you–and when Ezra
followed suit many centuries later. I could
feel
when you took it upon yourselves
to procreate and then when they in turn chose a mortal, and so on.
You have no idea how wrong these actions are–how blasphemous it is
to me! All these impure vampires that are walking about are flawed.
Not pure, like Ezra, Eme and you. I am the Blood God, it is
I
who should be choosing
who is eligible!” Adam turned and glared at
Elijah.

“For millennia I suffered
in torpor as my body slowly regenerated itself and I was left with
my growing abhorrence of my ungrateful fledglings. For look at what
I gave you! I gave you immortal life!” He walked back over to
Elijah and stood close to him, causing Elijah to feel
uncomfortable.

“So on to how I came to be
here with you now. Eight years ago when a group of archeologists
uncovered my body, I was more than ready for a small feast. And
feast I did. I am very grateful, for they released me; it just so
happens that they made the ultimate sacrifice by opening my
sarcophagus.”

He paused, closing his eyes
and swaying his head as he breathed in deeply, “Mmmm, and they were
so delicious. I had almost forgotten how good it was!” A slight
chuckle escaped his lips, but quickly enough his face
soured.

“Unfortunately, their blood
did not help me to regenerate to my old self and I was left scarred
as when you last saw me.” Adam paused as he saw Elijah beginning to
form words, “Yes son, what is it?”

“But how
are you in
this
body, this form?”

“Ah, yes.
Well, you see I was very,
very
angry as you could imagine. All these vampires
around the world and I had no say! So, I began a cleansing of all
those I felt did not deserve my lineage. I started my way through
Europe. The more I eradicated those unworthy of my blood, the
closer I came to your fledglings. I was able to lock in on where
Ezra, Eme and you were. Oddly enough, I found myself fascinated
with the group of vampires you had decided to call your clan.
Knowing that killing these particular vampires would cause you and
Eme much sorrow, I decided I would save them for last–for I never
imagined at the time that I would be killed. But I took
precautions. I found this body. I loved its appearance and the soul
he possessed was so weak.” Adam’s grin grew.

“I know you like to feed on
the weak of mind and body.” Adam said, placing his hands behind his
back interlacing his fingers. Elijah bit his tongue and said
nothing in response.

“Well
anyway,” Adam continued, “I found myself a new body and I was quite
exhilarated. His blood was so robust and full of luscious
flavour
. I so enjoyed draining him
to the point of death.” Adam paused, “Why the face? You know what
it is like. There is no need for a look like that!” He
laughed.

“It is
not the fact that you
savoured
that boy’s
lifeblood, it is just
you
that disgusts me!” Elijah spat.

“Ah! There’s that spunk I
love so much!” Again, Elijah said nothing and Adam
continued.

“Now, on to how I came to
inhabit this beautiful body.” Adam chuckled. “This was the part I
wasn’t sure would work, but it was worth the try. I fed this
seemingly lifeless boy my blood and as I did I recited a spell to
transfer my soul into his body and place his dead soul into my
scarred husk.

“I was so pleasantly
surprised that it had worked. I then instructed my old body to kill
you, Eme, Ezra and any other vampire he crossed paths with.
Meanwhile, in my new body, I lay comatose in a hospital somewhere.
They filled my body with liquids–enough for it to emulate a normal
pulse. However my body, which was not in need of the fluids, only
excreted them in a matter of moments. As my memory returned to me
and I lay in that hospital bed, I began recruiting Brenna and
Kristine. Zoning in on them in a meditative state, I used their
telepathy to my advantage. So far they have been working out
well.”

Adam turned and sauntered
over to the nearby couch. Taking a seat, he offered Elijah the
stiff white chair that sat opposite him.

“So, what’s with the change
of game plan? That is what you must be asking yourself, right?”
Adam said, crossing his legs.

“Yes, what do you want with
me? Why did you ask me to meet with you?” Elijah slid into the
offered chair, his body rigid and on guard.

“Well, I guess you could
say I am recruiting…” Adam paused. “But in full honesty, I want
Deirdra.”

Elijah’s eyes widened and
he felt a wave of anger and fear overwhelm him. “No. You cannot
have her. She will never go to you.”

“Ah, well, we shall have to
wait and see won’t we?” A vicious grin spread across his face. “She
will be my Queen and I her King. We shall rule the night, she and
I. And you, you and your little fiendish friends shall be my
minions. This city, this country–the whole world will have new gods
to praise and worship as they already praise rock stars and actors
rather than God himself. They are in need of something new,
powerfully seductive and menacing; they need us to rule over them.
They will all praise my Queen and me and bow at our feet with
pleasure. There is so much to do! I am quite excited–aren’t you?” A
deep laugh bellowed out from him filling the room with a sense of
foreboding.

Elijah flew from his chair
and towards Adam. Elijah thrust his hands out and grabbed Adam’s
neck, squeezing it forcefully. As he tightened his grip, Adam let
out a quick laugh until he could no longer do so.

In a blur Elijah was sent
flying across the room and landed hard on the tile
floor.

“Don’t tempt me
child!”

Elijah jumped up in front
of Adam, his wrath overpowering his common sense. He swung his
fist, which connected hard with Adam’s cheekbone. As his body
turned, he swiftly raised his foot landing a heavy blow to Adam’s
head. Adam teetered on his feet, his head turned to the side, his
hair tousled by the blow. Adam stood eerily motionless. Elijah
scanned the room looking for an escape. Knowing that Brenna and
Kristine were undoubtedly ready to aid Adam in his fight, Elijah
turned his thoughts from the locked door as a possible exit to
escaping through the window.

Before he knew it, Adam was
on top of Elijah, pinning him to the floor. His teeth tore into his
neck with animosity. Elijah cried out in pain and exasperation.
Squirming and flailing at Adam, he tried in vain to free himself as
Adam drank from him. As he lay trapped under Adam, complete fear,
tainted with wrath, filled him. Adam’s strength was unfathomable to
Elijah. His body numbed from the attack, a single tear fell from
Elijah’s eyes.

Adam pulled back and
hovered above Elijah, larger than life. A cold laugh escaped his
lips as he looked upon his child.

“You are lucky tonight, for
I will let you live. But if you wish to do so, you must feed
yourself. For you have seen what happens if you do not, remember
Ezra–he just died. Poor thing, he didn’t have the sense to feed.
Oh, but I almost forgot…” The chill of Adam’s laugh filled the
room. “I wouldn’t let him. My how the mind misplaces memories with
age.” He snickered, watching as Elijah rolled on the floor trying
to rise to his feet.

Finally standing, Elijah
stood shaky and uncertain. Without a word spoken, he turned and
walked towards the door. He reached for the doorknob and was
grateful to find the door unlocked. Grasping the handle, he turned
to look one last time at Adam before staggering out of the
room.

Making his way down the
hall and back to the kitchen, he was glad Brenna and Kristine were
nowhere in sight. He didn’t think he could handle any ridicule from
Brenna after his ordeal with his sire. Approaching the back door he
paused as he heard a familiar voice. Elijah bowed his head, wanting
desperately to help as he knew it was Stone pleading for mercy. He
could have wept at the sound of his voice and the lack of his
strength but turning, the anguish evident on his face, Elijah did
the hardest thing he ever had to do–he walked out the
door.

It was a long walk back to
Chantonnay. Elijah took Adam’s advice and fed, but it was more so
because his hunger grew too immense to ignore. In a near feverish
state, Elijah tried to control his thirst. He knew whoever was
unlucky enough to have chosen to walk down that street that night
was not going to survive his hunger. He soon found his feast–a
teenage homeless couple. They sat around a metal barrel warming
themselves with the flames from its burning contents
inside.

In his
weakened state his ability to ambush them was greatly diminished.
Clumsily he made his way to the couple and used his telepathy to
his advantage. He stood calmly before the two, his
demeanour
gentle despite his raging hunger. Silently he told
the boy that he had nothing to worry about. Turning him towards the
street, Elijah mesmerized him into believing he saw a kennel of
puppies to keep him occupied while he fed on his friend. The boy
did as he was told and in a trance he acted out his interaction
with his hallucination. Before the girl could question him, Elijah
was on her, his teeth tearing her flesh. He let out a moan of
delight, her lifeblood was ambrosial. Reaching
fervour
he pressed his cold torso against her hot body, enjoying the
taste of her, the feel of her. As her body became weaker with each
swallow of her blood, his strength returned.

He pulled away as her heart
began to beat erratically. As the wind sent the aroma of the boy’s
blood towards him, Elijah dropped the girl onto the cold, hard
ground. He now turned his attention to the boy.

In just a few steps, Elijah
stood behind the teenager and roughly turned the boy to face him.
The sudden jerking woke the boy from his hypnotized state and he
looked about in total confusion. Seeing his girlfriend lying
lifeless on the ground he began to tremble. The boy tried to take a
step back but Elijah held him firmly in place. Without a word he
cocked the boy’s head to the side and fed upon him until Elijah had
his fill.
