“What do you know about
this Adam? Who is he?” I asked. I examined his facial expressions,
his movements. Then I noticed a bite mark on his neck. Before
Elijah could answer me I stood in front of him and reached out to
touch the wound.

“Who did this to you?” I
was frantic with worry. “Why aren’t you healing?” I asked even
though I knew I probably wouldn’t get much of an answer from him. I
felt my fear turn to anger, to that putrid anger that seemed to be
poisoning me.

“For Christ’s sake, what
the hell is going on?” I started back towards the car but stopped
halfway.

“Are you coming or what?” I
said, “Well?” I waited, tapping my foot with irritation.

“He’s changing you,” Elijah
whispered.

“I’m not the one that’s
changing. You are! You and everyone else!” I said, pointing angrily
at him. I shook my head and turned to walk back to the
car.

“Screw
him
!” My vexatious thoughts screamed at me.

Leave him there and so be it if someone
or something kills him
.” My stomach began
to churn again. I stood as still as I possibly could, hoping it
would pass. Fortunately it did. After a deep breath I opened the
door and sat in the warm car. I sat there for a moment trying to
relax when a sudden pang of hunger hit me. Oddly, as my hunger grew
I became obsessed with thoughts of killing. In that instant, I felt
such guilt at my desire to kill and was ashamed of the intensity of
my bloodlust. I closed my eyes and pressed my forehead against the
steering wheel. I desperately wanted the thoughts to go away. All
of a sudden, a voice entered my mind.

“I found
Stone
.” It was Elijah. My eyes flew open
and I looked out the tinted window to see him standing in the snow.
Right away I got out of the car and was by his
side.

“Where is he?” I asked, my
thoughts going wild.

“He is with Brenna and
Kristine. Not the best hands to be in I might add. Your child is no
longer yours and Kristine cannot be trusted. We are all pawns in
Adam’s game. You must see that, you have to!” Elijah
said.

“What do
you mean she’s not my child anymore? And as for Kristine, I never
trusted her to begin with!” I exclaimed. I felt my anger grow, “and
how do you know this Adam, who
is
he?”

Elijah leaned in towards me
and whispered into my ear, “176 Garner Drive, you will find them
all there. I warn you though, be careful.” Elijah gingerly kissed
my cheek. I took in a deep breath and with it inhaled the scent of
cologne mingled with human blood. My hunger pulled me into a trance
where all I knew was that it needed to be sated. I wrapped my arms
around him and pulled him close to me. Looking at the wound on the
left side of his neck, I opted for the untouched side. Without
thinking I opened my mouth and my teeth pierced his skin. Elijah
grabbed firmly onto my shoulders and pushed me away.

“No,” he said. I felt my
temper grow at his actions. I shrugged out of his grasp and walked
back to the idling car. After hopping in, I revved the engine and
sped away, leaving Elijah behind.

Chapter 5

(Stone - December 6,
1999)

Stone moaned and a muffled
cry escaped his lips as both Brenna and Kristine fed from him
simultaneously. He could feel himself losing strength with each
swallow of his blood. He had tried to push them away, but their
force was no match for his deteriorating strength and will-power.
Feeling submissive and worthless, he lay there, neck exposed,
willingly offering his life to be drank away.

He lay there, eyes closed,
hating the fact that he had been brought to the point of ecstasy by
these two. He tried in vain to cry out, to stop them. But as usual
they drank their fill. Leaving him with the taste of his own blood
on his lips, the metallic taste lingered as he licked at it. Stone
was now past the point of caring what would happen to him. The
desire to taste their immortal blood plagued his thoughts and
invaded his dreams. He had become an addict, his skin itching at
the mere thought of drinking their blood.

As Brenna and Kristine made
their way to the door Stone mustered a cry, “Please! You must let
me have some of your blood. I… I need you to make me feel
stronger.” Stone was shivering, naked in the tiny bed. Wounds
covered his body.

Brenna turned to look at
Stone. While her eyes seemed empathetic, her tone was cruel and
vindictive.

“Why
should I? As I recall, you said you would
hate
to be like me. So as I see it, I
have given you too much already. Now you crave it. It is my own
fault really, oh well. Live and learn I guess,” she said closing
the door behind her.

Being left alone again,
Stone’s relaxed with a sigh. His head spun as he sat up, dizziness
taking over. Spotting his soiled clothes in a lump in the corner,
he decided to at least try to dress himself. Resting for a moment
on edge of the bed, Stone gathered all his strength before he rose
to his unsteady feet. He made his way sluggishly to the corner.
Slowly he began to dress himself, loathing how weak he felt. With
each layer of clothing Stone felt instantly warmer. Fully dressed,
myriad thoughts swirled around his brain: thoughts of escape and
revenge. But he knew he could never mete out the revenge he desired
for Brenna and Kristine. For now, he would work out plans for a
possible escape.

“There has got to be a way
to get that damn door open. The hinges are old–this whole place, if
it’s like this room, is old!” Stone paused and scanned the room for
the hundred millionth time. This time, he noticed cracks in the
cement walls and weak plaster. He realized why he had been chained
up until this point. Because he was now so weak they thought he
wouldn’t have the strength to pry away what was keeping him in that
room. But weak or not, he was not going to allow himself to be an
immortal’s snack any longer.

Pushing himself away from
the wall, Stone crept to the other side of the room only to stand
before the door feeling feeble. A sigh escaped his lips as he bowed
his head in defeat. He wished that Kristine or Brenna had given him
just some of their blood, so he could feel just a little bit
stronger. He started examining the hinges of the door and the
plaster around them. Seeing a spot by the upper hinge where the
plaster had already peeled away, he began to pick at it. He soon
became irritated that his fingers could not pry the plaster away
fast enough. Stone looked about the barren room for
something–anything–to help him along.

Holding back his
excitement, he made his way to the bed. Kneeling on the cold cement
floor, he reached under it to feel for the wires that held the
mattress in place. Finding a broken spring, he pulled and twisted
with all his might until it finally came loose, snapping his hand
against the floor. Holding back a curse, he whimpered on his way
back to the door. He began to scrape away the plaster from the
hinges with the wire. Finally, he had scraped away enough of it to
reveal the tiny planks of horizontal wood that lay behind. Every so
often Stone stopped to listen for footsteps. His heart raced as his
hopes of escaping grew with each passing minute. The screws of the
hinge began to loosen and soon they fell to the floor.

Two hours later the top
hinge had been removed and the bottom one was well on its way.
Stone had worked at a frenzied pace, and his body was drenched in
sweat. He felt euphoric as he pulled at the door with all his might
and it slid open. His body desperately needed rest but his will
triumphed and he slithered his way through the tiny opening and
into the dimly lit hallway. He allowed himself to rest and catch
his breath for just a moment.

Upon examining the hall he
saw that he had two options: one direction would lead him to stairs
and the other would not. He headed towards the latter, hoping for
the best. To the best of his ability Stone could not hear anyone
either upstairs or in the hallway. As he turned a corner he saw the
back door. The light outside glowed a soft yellow, like a beacon of
hope. His pace quickened as he raced towards freedom. But after
pulling on the door, he found it wouldn’t open. His heart raced.
Afraid he might be heard he stopped pulling and lowered his
head.

With a sigh he lifted his
head to look at the ominous door and as he did he realized the
deadbolt was turned to the locked position. Angry at his own
stupidity, he turned the lock easily and opened the door with just
a slight creak. A wave of frigid air hit him, waking all his
senses. He stepped out into the winter air and closed the door
behind him. Breathing deeply, he crept alongside the brick house.
Realizing he was nearing the front of the building, his pace
quickened. He could hear cars passing by every so often and he
hoped he might be able to catch a cab nearby.

Shivering, Stone paused to
peer around the corner, checking to see if anyone was there. Seeing
no one, he darted out towards the street. Running at a steady pace
the cold air began to numb his fingers and it became harder for his
body to move. The cold was stiffening his weakened muscles. The
toll on his body finally won over his determination and he slowed
to a walk. Stone tried to orient himself, but it was an area of
Montreal he had never seen before. He knew he had to find some way
of getting back to Chantonnay–hopefully before he froze.

At a snail’s pace a black
BMW came towards him. His heart raced as it approached, closer and
closer. Instinctively Stone quickened his pace to a run. When he
heard the car come to a halt and the door open, he feared the
worst. He turned to his left and ran across the road nearly getting
hit by an on-coming minivan. But Stone knew he had no escape. He
feared for his life. His pursuer was on top of him now, grasping
him firmly with their cold hands. He flailed his arms about,
hitting and kicking with all his might.

“Just let me go!” Stone
yelled. His captor turned him around and he was finally able to see
who it was–Brenna.

“I see we didn’t give you
enough credit. I have to say you have surprised me. I never would
have dreamed I would see you running down the street to freedom,”
Brenna said with a mischievous grin. But her expression also showed
her anger, and without another word her hand connected with the
side of Stone’s skull. The impact sent him down hard to the
snow-covered ground, knocking him unconscious.

Chapter 6

(Elijah - December 6,
1999)

As soon as Elijah reached
out for the doorknob he knew this was a bad idea. He kept telling
himself that he should turn and leave, but knowing that Stone could
be inside forced him to ignore his instincts. Elijah couldn’t let
this boy go. In the time Stone had been with the family he had
grown to be one of Elijah’s favorite mortals. There was something
about him that reminded him of himself as a young man. The
attachment he felt for Stone was too great to just let him
die–which was a very real possibility.

Setting his fears aside, he
stepped into the building and closed the door behind him. Elijah
stood in the dimly lit entrance and listened for him. It wasn’t
long before he heard the familiar voice of Brenna talking to
Kristine. Elijah was uncertain as to why Brenna had called him and
asked him to come alone. He didn’t know that he would be meeting
Adam that night. Nor did he know that Adam would be evil
incarnate.

He made his way through the
hallway towards the kitchen, where he found both Brenna and
Kristine sitting at a table covered with magazines and newspapers.
The two women looked up almost simultaneously as Elijah appeared.
Kristine’s expression soured at his sudden presence and Brenna
seemed amused, which angered him.

“So, this is where you have
been hiding?” Elijah said, showing his disgust. Brenna’s look of
amusement faded.

“Oh, please. Get over
yourself. This place is just fine,” Brenna said, standing up.
Kristine remained sitting and as usual, spoke not a single
word.

“Where is he?” Elijah
demanded. Brenna smirked and made her way over to him. Her eyes
were filled with deviousness. She caressed his jaw and
sighed.

“Oh, he is here. Don’t you
worry yourself,” she said, taking back her hand glancing at
Kristine. Kristine stood and walked over to the doorway. She
paused, her eyes soulless, and waited for Elijah and Brenna to
follow her. Elijah moved first; Brenna trailing close behind
him.

Elijah felt uneasy, as
though it where a trap, but he kept walking. He tried to prepare
himself for anything, but he was easily distracted. Passing a
series of doors, Kristine stopped at the last one. She turned and
faced Elijah with an eerie gaze. Elijah furrowed his brow showing
his contempt. Stiffening his posture, he blocked off any unease he
may have showed earlier in an attempt to gain control of the
situation.

“Adam is here. He has been
patiently waiting for you or Eme to come to him. I’d say he is
pleased that you are the one to come first. You will probably not
recognize him by his appearance, but by his soul.” And with that
Brenna stepped in front of Elijah. Opening the door she peeked
inside and then gestured for him to enter. Elijah stood there for a
minute, trying to gather his thoughts and understand what Brenna
had said. With a deep breath he entered the room.
