Miss Jenny and Aaron Walck married shortly after me and Chester. They had a whole passel of young ones. Six babies, one almost right after the other. It wore her out, having all those babies close together, which made it a good thing that Chester and me lived in a little cabin right out back of Aaron’s home. It was like caring for Miss Jenny all over again
.

And Zedikiah? He had a hard road. We worked together to care for him as best we could. After a rough start, he finally settled down in his work and eventually he became Aaron Walck’s most trusted craftsman. Cooper played a minor role in his life, I’m sorry to say. Zedikiah never quite took to having him for a father. I’m guessing that sometimes we only get one chance to set things right. Cooper had his chance, and though he cleared his conscience by confessing to Zedikiah, he was never quite able to move beyond the fact that had he made things right sooner, things would have been different. Both for him and Zedikiah
.

Still, he died in his son’s arms, and Zedikiah visited his grave often. Sad to see. Best to heal rifts when you’re alive than after someone is dead and gone. But the world isn’t a perfect place, and people aren’t perfect either. Only God is perfect. It’s up to us to be more like Him, but some come to it later than others, and some not at all
.

I lay my pen aside now, hoping that someone might read this love story and realize that you don’t have to be young to find true love. Sometimes it’s even better to be older, because youthful longings can choose the wrong person
.

My heart is content to leave you in His care

For Lauren, the next writer in the family. You’ve overcome so much and still retain your sense of humor. It is hard to believe you are the same baby who struggled for life for seventy-five days, and I can only marvel at the young woman you are becoming.
Te quiero
