Point of No Return

NR Walker

I'd almost quit. Not for anything to do with being singled out, but I couldn't bear the thought of something happening to Kira again, just because of my job. It was Kira who'd told me to wake up. I think he'd earned a lot of respect from the boys by telling me not to leave what I love. "It's what you do," he said. "You catch bad guys."

So when we needed to move Kira's stuff from his place to mine, the guys didn't hesitate to help. Though I'd bet money they'd regret it tomorrow: the four of us were aching already.

After we'd eaten lunch, we sat around enjoying the afternoon sun, talking crap like we always did, when there was a knock at the door. Kira got up to see who it was, and walked back out with an unexpected guest.

Berkman.

Our boss had been rather patient with us. I nearly quit, and with the others having doubts as well, it was after much discussion—and the support from our other halves—

we decided our jobs were worth something, and we agreed the four of us would stay as a team. Berkman never pressured us. He gave us space and time, and everything the department had to offer. The more I thought about it, the more I wondered if the lack of 'gay' comments from the other cops had something to do with Berkman threatening bodily harm.

"Hey, thanks for the invite," he said sarcastically, sitting himself at the table, swiping my beer. He took a mouthful and sighed, while we waited for him to explain the reason for his visit.

Berkman knew we were moving Kira into my house today, so he knew where to find us all in one place. He sighed again. "The DA's office phoned me about an hour ago," he said seriously. "Pavao Tomic was found dead in his cell this morning."

Everyone blinked. No one said a word.

Kira got up, walked back inside and came out with a fresh beer for me.

"He's supposed to be in court tomorrow," Tony said out loud.

"Not any more he's not," Kurt replied.

"Goddammit," Mitch huffed.

It was a hollow closure, somewhat dissatisfying.

We all knew it. We all felt the same.

"So what does that mean for the Tomic case?" Kira asked.

I shrugged. "It's over. We can still pursue Tomic's men, but as for the Tomic twins, it's case closed."

"Just like that?"

I nodded. "Just like that."

Mitch sighed. "So what do we do tomorrow?"

"New cases, new bad guys," Berkman said simply.

He gazed around the table at us, held up his beer, and we all clinked our bottles to his.

I glanced at the others sitting at the table, and smiled. "To new cases, new bad guys."
