At Lennon’s, a modern bar popular with an after-work crowd, Eric and Nathan took a tall table by the bar and ordered drinks that they clinked in a toast. A few feet away, a man who resembled Mark Bollworm looked permanently affixed to the bar itself. His hunched shoulders and his lowered head sang defeat.
“Excuse me for a minute, Nathan.”
Eric took the barstool next to Mark, set his drink on the bar, and waited.
“Eric Snackerge!” Mark said, and looked him over. “You look like an investment banker.”
“How are things, Mark?” Eric said, looking up at the TV screen.
Mark laughed, but it was cynical. “Oh, things are great. Really great. I suppose you’ll be happy to hear that I lost my job thanks to the fallout from this whole Nidus-Quantal scandal.”
“Really,” Eric said, hand on his drink, still looking up.
“And Willa froze me out, told me to leave her alone.”
“Mm.”
“Hey, maybe later we can hang out, maybe bowl a few games?”
“Nah, I’ve got to get home for dinner with Willa and Taffy.`” Eric got off the barstool and took his club soda with him. He signaled the bartender. “Another for my former friend, here.”
Eric turned to Mark. “By the way, if you’re hard up for work, I hear they’ve got an opening at the Buckhead. If you don’t mind the antlers.”
